Master of Puppets
Nothing Else Matters
Whiskey in the Jar

...all of which are some of my favourites.

well of course he plays those solos he played in the records like nothing else matters, whiskey in the jar, puppets

actually he plays a lot of solos

but if you mean that has he played some kirk solos then the answer is no Kirk always plays his own solos and james plays his

james is a great guitarist all the way!!

and they have of course jammed with james playing solos

I think that answer enough

Now, can you ask for a better setlist??? It was amazing!

Now, to the show.

I went by myself this time, and I brought two signs with me...

One was a Canadian flag, but it had the Ninja Star logo on it instead of the maple leaf. I'll take a pic of it soon. This one scored for me big time, and I'll tell you how in a bit.

The second one was my gem. It said "HAMILTON LOVES THAT SILLY LITTLE WEBSITE!" I'll explain why it was a gem in a second.

So, the show starts off with... No, not Blackened, but Battery! Great surprise there, and it just got better. After a sweet version of Fuel, the guys whipped out The Memory Remains, which was big on the sing along parts.

Now, this is where the awesomeness starts. It was around this time that Hetfield goes to the mic, and says, "Boy, I see a lot of Canadian flags around here." I heard this and screamed his name as loud as I could and held the flag I made up, and he looks at me and says, "Hey, that's a cool one!" That made my day there, but it just got more awesome after that.

They then played The Thing That Should Not Be (:O) and went into Frantic. At this time, I brought out my "HAMILTON LOVES THAT SILLY LITTLE WEBSITE!" sign, and guy (Pretty sure it was Niclas from MetOnTour.com) comes up to me and says he'll take my pic for the site. That was awesome, and he took my pic, and thanked me for the support. Thank me? Niclas, thank you, you f'in rock. It should be up very soon, and when it is, I'll post it here. This wouldn't be the last I would see of Niclas though. Kirk played a mean solo after Frantic, and it was very cool. He read my "Silly Website" sign as well, which rocked.

They then played some more songs, including Holier Than Thou, Whiskey in the Jar, Welcome Home (Sanitarium) and Fight Fire with Fire, all of which I've never heard live before, so that was sweet that they played those songs. Rob did his Junglessence solo as well, which sounded even better than it did in Toronto. (Did he add on to it or something?)

During this, Hetfield came around and I got to slap hands with him, which was awesome.

For the first encore, we got For Whom the Bell Tolls and Sad But True, along with NEM, One and Enter Sandman. The pyro for One was insane, much like it was in Toronto. During One, I got out my "Silly little website" sign and showed it to Lars and gave him the devil horns, and he looked right back and me, with his own set of devil horns. He was hunched over behind the bass drum when he did that, so that was funny. As well, Hetfield came back to over to my area, and we slapped fists this time. That was even more awesome. First a high five, then the fist. He had a mean looking ring on too, pretty sweet.

For the second encore, we got Dyers Eve. This helped finish the show on a high note, just like how Disposable Heroes made the Toronto show worth seeing. After this, we got everyone's fave, Seek & Destroy, which the crowd went nuts on.

When the show ended, I got blown away. While the guys were throwing picks to the crowd, James came over to me and gave me his wristband. His sweaty, awesome wristband. I couldn't even speak. I had just gotten a freakin' wristband from Hetfield! Aghhh!!! To top that off, Niclas came back over to me and gave me like 10 picks! I thought he was gonna give me like two, but he gave me 10! Ahahahah.....awesome.

So, after that, I left the building, and delibritely started looking through all my picks while walking through the crowd just to show them off. People were offering me like 10 bucks a pick, but there's no way I'd sell any of them.

Well, that's about it. I'm at home typing this, with ringing  ears and a satisfied Metallica smile, which James said he wanted us all to have. Well James, you did you job. Thanks.

And that's it. Metallica in Hamilton = best time of my life. And Lars, you're right. You should come back here more than every 7 years. Haha...

PS: Niclas, if that was even you, (I don't know, I've never seen you before :D) thank you so much for taking my picture, and the 10 picks. YOU ROCK!

View entire thread: All songs and albums
Posted by D-Man on 12/19/04 @ 11:10 PM    Post subject: Re: All songs and albums

Let's see...

Kill 'em All: 10 tracks
Ride the Lightning: 8 tracks
Master of Puppets: 8 tracks
...And Justice for All: 9 tracks
Metallica: 12 tracks
Load: 14 tracks
ReLoad: 13 tracks
Garage, Inc: 27 tracks
S&M: 21 tracks w/symphony
St. Anger: 11 tracks

So right there, we have 10 official albums, not including EPs, (Re-Revisited), Reissues (KEA with Am I Evil/Blitzkrieg), singles and live cds (except for S&M since those are different versions of the songs).

And with those 10 official albums, we have 133 songs.

And with those 133 songs, we have songs not released on official albums, including:

We Did it Again
I Disappear
53rd and 3rd
Commando
Today You Love, Tomorrow the World
Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue
Cretin Hop

That brings us to 140 songs.

Now, you can choose to include songs they played in demos, but never released, like

Sucking My Love
Let it Loose
The Mechanix

That's 143. You can choose to include songs played live as well, but that is a lot and I don't want to look those up.

You can also choose songs band members have appeared in, like:

James Hetfield: Don't You Think This Outlaw Bit's Done Gone Out of Hand
Kirk Hammett: Satan (from Spawn Soundtrack with Orbital)

There could be more, but I just don't know.

So, that's 10 official albums and 145 songs.

I'm going to include all albums now...

That would make 11, since we've added Live Shit: Binge and Purge.

I'm going to include all offcial EPs/singles now...

So we've got:

Jump in the Fire
Creeping Death
Garage Days Re-Revisited
Eye of the Beholder
One
Harvester of Sorrow
Enter Sandman
Sad But True
The Unforgiven
Wherever I May Roam
Nothing Else Matters
Until it Sleeps
King Nothing
Hero of the Day
Mama Said
Fuel
The Memory Remains
The Unforgiven II
Turn the Page
Die, Die My Darling
Whiskey in the Jar
No Leaf Clover
Nothing Else Matters (S&M)
Frantic
St. Anger
Some Kind of Monster
The Unnamed Feeling

So that's 27 official EPs/singles. If I forgot any, tell me...

I'm just gonna end it there. There are way more things you can include, but this seems like a good number:

9 albums with new material (including the Garage, Inc covers)
2 live albums, one with 'new' material (S&M versions)
27 official EPs/singles
145+ songs

That is not a correct number, btw. It's just the way I calculated it. It depends how you look at it.

Hehe, I was going to say the drummer looks about 12. Then i read the other 2 posts and found out it was you. Then I looked at your profile and saw you're 14. So that explains it. Anyway, it looks like a cool gig. How'd you end up playing such a big stage for your first gig?

very suprising. we gave in a demo and we were told we were good enough. we were shitting ourselves when we found out how big the stage was. thrown into the deep end i'd say.
it all went well though. finished with Whiskey in the jar.

its really funny u mention it, coz some of my fav metallica solos are played by James(2nd solo in orion, 1st solo in puppets, nothing else matters, whiskey in the jar) he and bob rock often have to guide kirk through many of his solos during the writing sessions(as discussed in the classic album's DVD). however, i thought it would be good for people to look at kirk as a very strong rhythm player and not just a lead guitarist. ;D

View entire thread: NEW CD, Songs that inspired Metallica
Posted by on 04/26/06 @ 01:27 AM    Post subject: NEW CD, Songs that inspired Metallica

Sanctuary Records are re-packaging the "Metallic-era" albums into one double set billed "Full Metal Garage - The Songs That Drove Metallica" for release on June 26.

Originally conceived by Rockdetector.com's Garry Sharpe-Young, all of these original tracks are available together, at last, on one double CD, "Full Metal Garage – The Songs That Drove Metallica". This album — fully approved by METALLICA — features artists such as BLACK SABBATH, MOTÖRHEAD, MISFITS, DIAMOND HEAD and THIN LIZZY. It's a genuinely inspirational collection of music and when you listen it's easy to see how this group of talented bands has influenced the lives and music of METALLICA.

Says Garry Sharpe-Young: "It's well known that METALLICA drew their inspiration from many of the NWoBHM bands, classic '70s rockers and British punk, and they themselves have been quick to honour these acts with their infamous 'Garage Days' sets and a swathe of B-sides over the years. It suddenly dawned on me one day, whilst working on album projects for the likes of SAVAGE and HOLOCAUST, that although fans knew of these tracks, most had never heard the originals. I then set wheels in motion to compile all of them into one collection. I can remember talking to DIAMOND HEAD's Sean Harris who told me that when they supported METALLICA at the Milton Keynes festival they got booed when they opened with 'Am I Evil' because the METALLICA fans thought they were doing a cover version! Also, perhaps the most direct inspiration for the band, Mansfield's SAVAGE, never got their justice by way of an official METALLICA cover but the band included a track on their first demos and used to play 'Let It Loose' live, neglecting to tell the audience it was a cover! Somehow, history got a bit skewed simply because METALLICA got so big. Here, you can hear all the originals, such as BUDGIE's 'Breadfan', which METALLICA used as a set opener for a huge number of shows, or Scotland's highly influential HOLOCAUST, SWEET SAVAGE's 'Killing Time' and JAGUAR from Bristol. Being a well-known obsessor over historical detail, it was a fun job putting these tracks together and, most importantly, getting some of these lesser known bands some well-overdue recognition."

METALLICA have dominated, changed and inspired the musical landscape since they burst onto the metal scene with the release of their debut album "Kill 'Em All" in 1983. The truly innovative and fresh approach from the San Francisco four-piece has materially changed the music we listen to today. Credited with creating thrash metal, METALLICA have always celebrated the music that has influenced them and have made previous homilies to the bands and musicians on the albums "Garage Days" revisited EP and the double album "Garage Inc."

Just thought I'd start a thread on this topic because not many people really comment on the solos in any of the Garage Inc. songs... so what do you think are some of the best solos on either Disc 1 or 2 of this album?

Some of my favs are:

Disc 1:

1. Whiskey In The Jar
2. Astronomy (5:30 point to end)
3. It's Electric

Disc 2:

1. Helpless (FUCKING AWESOME)
2. The Wait
3. Am I Evil? (one long and awesome fucker)
4. The Prince (the intro solo is insane)
5. Killing Time (high screechy quick blasts of heaven)

As you can see, Disc 2 is packed with kick-ass solos.

Now it's your turn.

Posted by Micky_Onimusha on 08/10/04 @ 08:30 AM    Post subject: Re: The Song that converted you to a life of Metal

Well. Before I was really into Metallica I'd only heard the Kerrang Video ones *One, Sandman, Dissapear, Nothing Else Matters, St Anger* which were constantly played.

Basically, I downloaded music that I'd heard from bands and when it got to Metallica about 50 songs popped up. I d/led the mall and at first I only liked a handful of them and printed a disk with them on *god knows why half my current favs weren't on it*

So the songs that had me hooekd in the end were:

The Memory Remains
The Unforgiven II
St Anger
My heart *not a Metallcia song but I was under the imrpession it was. Not sure who wrote it but I'm sick of it now*
One
Fuel
I Dissapear
Nothing Else Matters
Sad But True
The Real Thing *Another non-Metallica, but sounds a hell of a lot like old them, despite it saying it was from the new St Anger Album*
Whiskey in the Jar
Sanatarium
Battery
Enter Sandamn

though these chocies were influenced alot by the 1's everyone else seemed to liek since I played it at my former psych ward, so if they didn't liek a certain one I didn't add it, since I really wasn't that much for any of their songs at the time

We've ALL misheard Metallica lyrics. I know I have for SURE, and here are just a FEW of them. I'm missing a bunch, but I'd like to hear your guys', too. :P!

Blackened:
I heard: To begin with the dance of the dead
It's : To begin whipping dance of the dead

(this lyric still makes little to no sense to me. I like mine better. ;p)

Enter Sandman:
I heard: Say your prayers, it's the one, don't forget the sun
It's: Say your prayers, little one, don't forget my son

(I dunno why this always stuck.)

Turn the Page:
I heard: East over my heart
It's: East over Omaha

(I still like MINE better, dammit)

Whiskey in the Jar:
I heard: I choked up on my pistols
It's: I jumped up, fired my pistols

That's all I can remember for now - how about you guys?

Oh, and my favourite: when my friend was SERIOUSLY high on drugs, we were listening to my CD with a live Creeping Death, and he suddenly blurted out of nowhere:

"Is that motherfucker chanting 'Pie! 'Pie! 'Pie!!?"

To this day, I give him shit for it.

If you had to choose a Metallica setlist with just ONE song from each album, what would it look like? (This includes Garage Inc.)

1. The Four Horsemen
2. Fade To Black
3. Master of Puppets
4. One OR To Live is To Die (I really can't choose, but to hear TLITD would be amazing)
5. Nothing Else Matters
6. Outlaw Torn
7. Unforgiven II
8. Whiskey in the Jar
9. St. Anger

Yeah, they rock. Gotta love Wiskey and "The Boys are Back in Town", which has, IMO, The Best dual-guitar riff ever produced.

My friend didn't think that Thin Lizzy wrote Whiskey In The Jar, so I said...
