Second time seeing the band in 3 weeks, and I enjoyed this show even more than in Toronto...
Here's the setlist:

Now, can you ask for a better setlist??? It was amazing!
Now, to the show.
I went by myself this time, and I brought two signs with me...
One was a Canadian flag, but it had the Ninja Star logo on it instead of the maple leaf. I'll take a pic of it soon. This one scored for me big time, and I'll tell you how in a bit.
The second one was my gem. It said "HAMILTON LOVES THAT SILLY LITTLE WEBSITE!" I'll explain why it was a gem in a second.
So, the show starts off with... No, not Blackened, but Battery! Great surprise there, and it just got better. After a sweet version of Fuel, the guys whipped out The Memory Remains, which was big on the sing along parts.
Now, this is where the awesomeness starts. It was around this time that Hetfield goes to the mic, and says, "Boy, I see a lot of Canadian flags around here." I heard this and screamed his name as loud as I could and held the flag I made up, and he looks at me and says, "Hey, that's a cool one!" That made my day there, but it just got more awesome after that.
They then played The Thing That Should Not Be (:O) and went into Frantic. At this time, I brought out my "HAMILTON LOVES THAT SILLY LITTLE WEBSITE!" sign, and guy (Pretty sure it was Niclas from MetOnTour.com) comes up to me and says he'll take my pic for the site. That was awesome, and he took my pic, and thanked me for the support. Thank me? Niclas, thank you, you f'in rock. It should be up very soon, and when it is, I'll post it here. This wouldn't be the last I would see of Niclas though. Kirk played a mean solo after Frantic, and it was very cool. He read my "Silly Website" sign as well, which rocked.
They then played some more songs, including Holier Than Thou, Whiskey in the Jar, Welcome Home (Sanitarium) and Fight Fire with Fire, all of which I've never heard live before, so that was sweet that they played those songs. Rob did his Junglessence solo as well, which sounded even better than it did in Toronto. (Did he add on to it or something?)
During this, Hetfield came around and I got to slap hands with him, which was awesome.
For the first encore, we got For Whom the Bell Tolls and Sad But True, along with NEM, One and Enter Sandman. The pyro for One was insane, much like it was in Toronto. During One, I got out my "Silly little website" sign and showed it to Lars and gave him the devil horns, and he looked right back and me, with his own set of devil horns. He was hunched over behind the bass drum when he did that, so that was funny. As well, Hetfield came back to over to my area, and we slapped fists this time. That was even more awesome. First a high five, then the fist. He had a mean looking ring on too, pretty sweet.
For the second encore, we got Dyers Eve. This helped finish the show on a high note, just like how Disposable Heroes made the Toronto show worth seeing. After this, we got everyone's fave, Seek & Destroy, which the crowd went nuts on.
When the show ended, I got blown away. While the guys were throwing picks to the crowd, James came over to me and gave me his wristband. His sweaty, awesome wristband. I couldn't even speak. I had just gotten a freakin' wristband from Hetfield! Aghhh!!! To top that off, Niclas came back over to me and gave me like 10 picks! I thought he was gonna give me like two, but he gave me 10! Ahahahah.....awesome.
So, after that, I left the building, and delibritely started looking through all my picks while walking through the crowd just to show them off. People were offering me like 10 bucks a pick, but there's no way I'd sell any of them.
Well, that's about it. I'm at home typing this, with ringing ears and a satisfied Metallica smile, which James said he wanted us all to have. Well James, you did you job. Thanks.
And that's it. Metallica in Hamilton = best time of my life. And Lars, you're right. You should come back here more than every 7 years. Haha...
PS: Niclas, if that was even you, (I don't know, I've never seen you before :D) thank you so much for taking my picture, and the 10 picks. YOU ROCK!

| To tell you the truth, not 4 months ago I believed that this album was all hype. 3 good songs, nothing else. Then on a trip with my father to Detroit, I was prooved miserably wrong. With an open mind and hunger for another taste of MOP's hype, I stuck the disc in my CD player and blasted it. I didnt even know it but I was headbanging and trying to sing along......
Battery: One of my "three original" songs so to speak :D Everyone knows about the nice little guitars starting it off for us.... And everyone knows about how the song sowly builds until you are sitting there banging away goin.. "BATTERY" Opens up heavy, we get a little solo in there and a nice little finishing part at the end of the song at abuot the 4:45 mark. My god, an all time favourite of mine.
Master of Puppets: OK, this song rocks.. review is done..... OK, well if you want be to try and describe it, basically we get about a minute and abit opening, some singing, "COME CRAWLING FASTER.. OBEY YOUR MASTER" crazy shit.... and then at about the 3, 4 minute mark? we get a really nice james hetfield melodic solo that blows me away everytime. Why do I love it? I dunno. I jsut do... And you do/ will too! After that wwe get another 3 minutes or so of solos and hard, heavy rock biatch! Greatest Tallica song ever? Quite possibly!
The Thing That Should Not Be: Apparently James' favourite song.. One he thinks is real heavy... For me personally, nd this is not the case with most others i know... this song IS heavy, is great, but drags on alot and is repetitive. Such is the case with Disposible Heroes, I love em both but they are repetitive and after awhile you just wanna skip the track.. Funny thing is though this always seems to bring me back... Im always goi back to hear this song.....strange... Anywayz.. basically its hard, slow, kina Bellz-like, and great! Repetitive though in conclusion.
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)- Top 3 or 4 song on this album... top 20 Tallica song of all time. Its a ballad, and opens up and goes like "Fade To Black" and "One", but isn't as good as either. It is still absolutely great though. If One and Fade were non-existent, this song would probably get the recognition they get, or so i believe. Good soft opening, gets you feelin kina what teh songs about, then goes to some hard rockin! "LEAVE ME BE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" omg when james is singing that, everyones doin their thing... guitars boomin loud in your ears.... oo i love it!
--- In conclusion, Battery: 7.5 - 8/10 (not sure) - Harder Song
Master of Puppets: 10/10 - Faster Song - Best On Album
The Thing That Should Not Be: 7/10 - Hard and slow, Repetitive
Sanitarium 8.5/10 - Has everything!

| one of the first Metallica albums i ever got...and by far the best one... Battery-9.7 such a good opening song, thrashingly awesome. Killer solo. Master of Puppets-10 one of the legendary Metallica songs.Lyrics are perfect, slow section with mini solo is awesome The Thing That Should Not Be- 8.5 good song, doesnt stand out as one of my favorites though Welcome Home (Sanitarium)- 10 perfect song if you feel like shit. everything is perfect, wish it was longer! Disposable Heroes- 8.7 good song, again not one of my absolute favorites, but still a pretty good song Lepper Messiah- 9.7 awesome melody Orion- 9.8 perfect instrumental! love the beggining Damage, Inc.-10 good way to end the greatest CD ever created |

| Alright, here's an update on the Encycmet bootlegs... What I have done here is just a test run to see how much of a response we would get for providing bootlegs. The response has been huge, thanks to you guys. For now, the boots are going to go on hiatus for a bit. But, with that said, when they return, I'm gonna have a bunch of different ones for you guys to download, so don't lose hope. As well, the traffic for the bootleg downloads has been huge. Because of this, I'm thinking about making some new requirements to be able to get the bootlegs. Nothing major though, probably just a "you should have this many posts" thing. If that is done, they can't be spam posts either. But, I won't get ahead of myself here. As of now, the bootlegs are going to go on hold for now. But, that doesn't mean you can't get them. Many members here are more than willing to share the bootlegs, not to mention there's the regular bootleg forum for everyone to use. So, just a heads up.

| this is another one of my favorite album, i like it even more than RTL. it has alot of my favorite songs. the album alot of people would say Metallica is best known for.
1. Battery - a very good song, definitely one of the best songs on the album. starts of a little bit slow but its an awesome song. Right up there with MoP. This one gets an A-.
2. Master of Puppets - probably the most known song of the album and even of all Metallica songs. Its pretty long, but it doesn't get boring. I couldnt justify myself giving this anything lower than an A. Obey your master and go buy this album if you havent already.
Chop your breakfast on a mirror.
3. The Thing That Should Not Be - probably not the best song on the album but it's still a decent tune. i personally think the song is pretty good so i'll give it a B.
4. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - another pretty popular song. sounds very good and is a little different than the rest of this pretty heavy album. another of my personal favorites so it gets a B+.
5. Disposable Heroes - this has been one of my favorite songs for a long time. i especially like the lyrics to the song. one of its only drawbacks i can think of is that the intro is a bit long. this is a great song, one that is often left unnoticed. LISTEN TO IT NOW.

I say B+.
6. Leper Messiah - this is not my favorite song on the album, but not every song can be the best. despite not being the "best" it is still a good song and should get recognition. this song is also pretty heavy, like most of the album. this one gets a B-/B.
7. Orion (Instrumental) - like all Metallica instrumentals, this one is good. probably at the top of the list of my favorite Metallica instrumentals. After awhile it does get repetitive but it's for the most part a great song. this one gets a B.
8. Damage, Inc. - this is a pretty good song, also pretty heavy. a kinda slow start but it gets pretty good. this is probably my second to least favorite song on the album besides Thingy but i like every song on the album. This one gets a B.
Now on to the overall grade. I give the Metallica album, Master of Puppets a A-.

I agree. Everyone seems to be progressing musically these days, but for some reason the vocals are getting shittier and shittier, and people are enjoying it! |

| You'd be surprised, there's more than a handful of songs WITHOUT wah solos. Here is some stuff...this 'wah guide' is STRICTLY for solos on the STUDIO albums (not their live renditions), some songs you may think that have wah effects actually have other effects such as delay, flanger, etc. I've only done their first 5 albums (I didn't include Load and Reload because I'm not too familiar with a lot of those songs aside from the obvious like Fuel, Outlaw, Memory, etc). This may not be 100% correct but it's pretty close.
Songs with a wah solo: Hit the Lights Motorbreath Anesthesia - pulling teeth (for bass, the whole song is practically a solo) Phantom Lord No Remorse Fight Fire with fire Trapped Under Ice Battery The Thing that should not be Damage Inc. ...And Justice for All Eye of the Beholder Dyers Eve Enter Sandman Holier than Thou Wherever I may Roam Don't Tread on Me My Friend of Misery The Struggle Within

IF you count the improv. at the end of "For Whom the Bell tolls" then yes, it has wah in it.
REMEMBER, the non-wah solos probably have a different effect to them...so if you think there's wah in it, there actually isn't.
I agree with this list except I am pretty sure that there is a wah used in Leper Messiah after the sweeping. I dont listen to load/reload enough to tell you exact songs, but Kirk did go a little wah crazy in the 90's. But live, you can expect him to touch the wah at least once a song. |

| Eight of rock's hottest bands have contributed to a special re-recording of Metallica's "Master Of Puppets" in celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the classic album's release and the 25th anniversary of the magazine Kerrang! The CD will be given away free with Kerrang! issue 1102, which goes on sale April 5. Maazines with the special CD will be available in the usual spots outside of the UK- at your favorite record store or book store if they normally import Kerrrang!
"Remastered" features exclusive recordings by Bullet For My Valentine, Trivium, Fightstar, Machine Head, Funeral For A Friend, Chimaira, Mastodon and Mendeed, with the sleeve notes for the album written by none other than Lars Ulrich. "It's awesome to think that some of you guys weren't even born when we recorded "Master Of Puppets"!", laughed Lars. "When we started thinking about Kerrang! honoring "Master Of Puppets" with this tribute album, and saw the artwork and the line-up of bands we realized it was a big deal. Also please beware that this was a hugely personal experience for me, this was my shining moment. This was written kinda like a journal entry (so, if it seems like I'm speaking to myself you'll know why. ::)). Relive my passion, but remember that my personal thoughts and oppinions have been added!

October 8th,18th,19th 2004 (Typed up and changed over time.)
Off I went to the Corel Center…I must have felt for my ticket in my pocket 20 times while in the car, (Lmao…I was so damned paranoid) but it was obviously still there.
The songs played and played…and I can remember getting to Whiplash and the adrenaline rush was nuts because it’s ABOUT a Metallica concert!!!! And same with Metal Militia, the Four Hoursemen and Seek and Destroy (When we finally pulled up to the Corel Center)...

I was all in awe like I thought I’d be…’full Metallica mode!’ It was excellent! I was so damned hyped up.
There doesn’t look there’s a lot of people there until we see the front (where a lineup of people has started to grow to a decent size, possibly a little over 500 people outside?) and Mom asks me if we should circle around for minute or just let me go…of course I chose to get out of the car right away! ::)
So I got out and said I’d meet them after the show at the power box meeting place that we decided…they drove away and I was on my own…FINALLY!!!!!! :D
I couldn’t walk through the metal tunnel thing (on the right in the picture) fast enough…I honestly couldn’t wait…I unfolded my flag and let it wave in the breeze a little and I even wore it as a cape for a minute acting like a goof…when I came out of the tunnel really close to the Corel Center I could see the lineup for real now…it went ‘around’ the center from the look of it…Kinda funny though considering that there were doors all the way around anyways! Some scalper asked me if I had tickets to sell…I said no!!! Who the fuck wants to sell their Metallica ticket at the show anyways?!?!
Also The Bear were doing a live broadcast from there so this view made me smile (It said ‘WELCOME TO OTTAWA METALLICA’):

The Bear was decent for once and played a large amount of Metallica for the folks in line and those souls who couldn’t be there at all. Anyhow I made my way up the lines giving horns to fellow fans and receiving odd looks for being the lone blonde 15-year-old girl there thus far…heh. Basically I took a quick walk up and down the lines hoping to see someone I knew or see someone from the Metallica.com message boards…And I was going to check into Marshy’s, but I figured it was too late for the ‘meeting’ anyways. So I was walking back looking at all the vintage Metallica T-shirts and hearing all the Metallica songs people were blasting on Boom Boxes they brought with them (what the fuck do they do with them when it’s show time?!) . I heard Wherever I May Roam, Frantic, The Unnamed Feeling and Enter Sandman to name a few.
Then the most amazing thing happened, I made eye contact with this one guy (right at the main entrance with another group of guys….) and we stared each other down for a few seconds and then he unrolled his banner and showed me it (by now the guys around him were wondering who the fuck I was, I’m guessing they all met up randomly in line too.) and I was like ‘Excellent…Excellent!’ it said "WE ARE NOT WORTHY - OTTAWA MILITIA" with the outline of the Parliament buildings. (All smiles from me!) and I showed mine and described it and they were like ‘that’s pretty cool’ etc….then I decided I’d take a wild leap (well not really wild…I thought I recognized him…) I asked ‘Is anyone here from the Ottawa thread on the Metallica.com boards?’ and the guy I made eye contact with came forward and said he was Ratpoison_! Exactly the guy who posted his picture and said to look for him. I told him I was Krystyna and he was all excited that he actually got to meet me! So basically I knew I had found my clan for the night…I’m not huge on meeting guys off of the internet (it’s not a good habit to get into…but Ratpoison_ <aka patrick but I didn't learn that until after the show> would be #2 ironically enough…lol)
Anyhow, in line I met a blonde guy who was about 17, an 18ish year old guy with semi-long brown hair, a 30 year old guy named Scott (I didn’t learn his name until after the show though), and a couple other guys that I spoke to briefly and hung out with in the group of about 7 of us. They were VERY nice to me…extremely welcoming….I get the idea we were all strangers sort of brought together randomly for this one night! Anyhow…we all got talking and hyping each other up, showing off our banners and our tickets (Scott had the orange kind ordered right off the Met club with the SKOM artwork and gold lettering…very nice!).
Some of the conversation matter covered was bands we all like…there was a Godsmack fan, a KISS fan, obviously lots of Metallica fans, Avril, Alice in Chains, Nickleback, Megadeth, Iron Maiden etc…just to name but a few. And gradually the line up got bigger and the area in front of the Corel Center got more and more crowded…then Scott took off for 15 mins or so to get some booze in him before the doors opened. The rest of us continued talking about the Dyers Eve chant Patrick planned and about all the songs we were hoping to hear and such…and then the Bear played Until It Sleeps, which resulted in a little singing along (barely though….) and our little clan getting peeved that the volume was so damned low so we all shouted at the Bear to TURN IT THE FUCK UP! And then sent 2 people over to convince em…Suffice it to say The Bear kindly acknowledged our request and turned their broadcast up louder (Never mess with 3,000 Metallica fans all eagerly waiting in line. :P ;) ).
A little while later they played a Metallica interview with James that actually started skipping and cutting out so no one actually heard much of it…The Bear got Boo-ed pretty badly for that one, it was pretty damned funny. We got to heckle the Bear for like three hours before the doors opened! LMAO…. but really, it should have been Chez 106 doing the Metallica coverage right? Right?
Pretty soon Scott joined up with us again and we decided it was time to move in closer to the doors and huddle up against the building (The crowd must have been at least 4,000 people by then.). Then he took out his gold marker and wrote ‘OZZY’ on one wrist (We were like…wtf…why’d you write ozzy on your wrist…write Metallica!!!) and ‘METALLICA’ on the other. And he shoved his banner down his pants and zipped up really tightly so he was sure to get past security guys (supposedly there was a size restriction on banners). He often complained of tightness…but all for Metallica. HA!!…He told us he drew his banner himself and he wanted to get it signed just like his Kiss, Evanescence and Nickleback banners.
There were about 2 hours to go two magical things happened…1) The Bear started playing Enter Sandman…and the clan all started air guitaring/singing along REALLY loudly…LMAO..it was crazy…as a rule, I NEVER sing anything in front of everyone…but seeing as though I was so damned hyped and would be singing along all night I practically jumped right in the fire (damn that was cheesy :-/)! It was so much fucking fun…we got 1/2th of the people around us joining in as well. It was a major fan moment for sure…it’s something I’ll remember forever (Even the freaking wait in line was great….Metallica fans are excellent.). You could barely hear the radio actually playing the song…all I heard was crazed Metallica fans…much like the duration of the concert, but I’ll get to that point soon. ;)
The second thing that happened was, while we were clawing at the doors and fogging up the glass with like an hour left before they were letting us in…we felt a BOOM! A vibration that went up the foundation sorta….and all at once we looked at each other and went ‘Sound check!’ then opened a door and let ourselves in discreetly…and we just stood there looking up and around the Corel Center lobby…dead silent, just listening…and BOOM! There it was again…and a guitar joined it...’It’s probably Metallica doing their sound check!’ we we’re thinking…’could also be Godsmack…’ but we were practically silent with excitement and awe for a good 30 seconds until the door guys kicked us back outside. The blonde guy made a comment about it sounding like Lars…and I was like ‘Hammer of the Gods!’ LOL. We also saw a guy outside in a cowboy hat…and I blurted ‘hahah…that guy wants to hear Mama Said!’ much fun…. and I heckled people in AC/DC shirts too lol…. (Why would you do that!? You’re at a Metallica show for fuck sakes!!!)
Pretty soon we all settled back into idle chatting and psyching each other up some more….
With like 1 hour left to kill we were all crazed…plotting our mad dash into the lobby to get our tickets checked then to the next security guy to get patted down and have our tickets scanned…then to run to the barricades!!!!!!!!! By this point we had sunk to writing ‘let us in!’ on the glass in spit etc…lmao…it was great…the fans to the left of us started chanting ‘let us in! let us in!’ and pounding on the doors…our clan mocked them and chanted ‘go leafs go’ over them LMAO. Great times with those guys, no joke. We counted down, and heard yet another Metallica interview on Chez. And then finally….there was 10 minutes left until the doors opened!!!!!!!!
The guys around me in the said group told me to get on the right side of the door and everyone was ready to pounce through the door and RUN!!!! We started asking eachother what time we had…one had 3, one had 7, one had 10, mine had 5…so we went on the basis that it could be ANY MINUTE NOW!!!
At long last the door opened!!!

And we rushed in…the first guy put a black mark on my ticket and let me thru…(by then I had pretty much lost the other guys!) and I ran to the scanner guy and then ran and followed the blonde guy down to the arena!!!!!!
October 20th-- November 7th, 2004 (Note…I started this review on Oct 7th at about 12am…oct 8th really. But meh…I continued it on Oct 20th)
WE RAN DOWN TO THE ARENA!!!!!
And by then everyone in our clan was scattered behind me….the general rule of thumb was don’t fucking wait for anyone, just run down to the arena and park yourself near the barricades! Hopefully everyone else finds one another again.
So we RAN our asses off down to the guy who was distributing wristbands and got the pink ones put on really quickly and made it to the barricade at the far right corner. Amazingly the clan joined back together in a fairly short amount of time!!!! Patrick and Scott were closest to the rail…but we were told to sit so that there would be enough space for everyone on the floor.
‘we made it in’ the blonde guy said… ‘yep, but there’s still like an hour left until the show starts…and then Godsmack is on for an hour.’
So we wait…and Scott unzips himself and pulls his banner out finally. LOL….and he apparently found one of his friends who was sitting in a first row seat or something and was talking back and fourth to him and wanted to show his banner. He unfolds it…and Oh my god…it was stunning, it was seriously professional looking!!!! He drew it by hand using PENCIL CRAYONS and PERMANENT MARKERS!!!!! It was really something…. he was so damned nervous about getting it signed though…amazing banner though, we kept telling him to make eye contact with the Metallica boys and wave the marker while we held up the banner. In my thoughts at that moment, I figured ‘fuck, of course they’re going to see it and sign it…it’s the best banner in the whole auditorium tonight and we’re only like 5 feet from the stage!!!!’

Every so often while waiting I finally paused and thought about how fucking lucky It was that I did not have homework and that Metallica had FINALLY come to Ottawa! And I also paused to lock the Corel Center BEFORE Metallica into my mind forever: There was this advertising light thing that went all the way around the arena and lit the area up weird colors like lime green for the TD bank ad or red for the Sens ad (I think.)…it was cool…not as an ad, but as an effect…it all added to the effect. Scott started singing Bleeding Me once or twice during the wait and a guy with a really faded Black Album T-shirt sat near us…some people were getting up and coming back with pizza and stuff too.
…And then I recognized someone else…or rather they recognized me and tapped me on the shoulder!!! It was the kid with the afro-ish hair’s mom from when I was waiting in line to buy my ticket for the show in August at the rideau center!!!! I could hardly believe we met again…but it happened…I was already on cloud nine being in the Corel Center arena floor. Anyhow she was really nice to me and just wanted to know if I had a good spot because I was welcome to come over to their area of the barricades and hang with them. I declined, but told her that it was great to see her again.
A few times while waiting people got up and started cheering like crazy…. my bet is that they saw someone come out of the middle part of the stage and thought it was a band member lol. We all just got told to sit down again, until finally…the lights dimmed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I jumped right up and squeezed myself in between Patrick and Scott…who were more than willing to share the excitement, the folks behind me packed in pretty tightly too.
And there was GODSMACK!!!!!!…On the other side of the stage, but it was a rotating stage so it didn’t matter. Their guitarist came over to our corner during the first song and started giving us the horns…not a huge rush like The Wildhearts were when I saw them in June, but they definitely got the crowd ready and hyper!!! Their basist and Guitarist were the best though…and the Sully/Shannen drum solo bit was nice, I got to hear a little bit of Walk This Way!

In no particular order….I was Metallica crazed beyond return at that point, I wasn’t even trying to remember their set list, there was probably more songs than that. Sang along pretty enthusiastically with everything I knew.
Then Godsmack tossed picks and drumsticks (I didn’t catch any…but they were a little out of my reach anyways) I remember wondering if I’d be able to catch a pick during Metallica…? Or if my Banner would get on Metontour.com or not?
Then the lights came on and everyone standing lit up their joints/cigs before metallica…I figured we had about an hour to go…soon these guys/gals that looked like they were from NASA came out and did the stage changes really quickly and did all the lighting and pyro set up and two people STAYED up there I believe. Must’ve been to set off the pyro or something….
and then suddenly it all went dark and the Ecstasy of Gold began to play...this is when I realized I was finally seeing a Metallica show for the very first time.
NOTE: This is my review from RIGHT after the show with bits and pieces added to it that didn’t belong in a review…this is my journal of sorts of the show so EVERY detail goes into my version. I’m typing this up as I listen to it as well.
http://www.metallica.com/ivergence/image/oct704_11.jpg The stage lights came on and they opened with Blackened, just like I'd hoped for, the intro gave me quite a reaction...this was amazing live...I'd been praying to the rock gods for Blackened as an opener and not Fuel or Battery. Low and behold they answered me!!!! Quite a rush…James’ vocals were top notch. I could barely hear more than guitar, drums and CROWD though.
Next James started the ‘Give me an M, Give me an E, Gimme a T, Gimme an A, Give me an L…..GIMME FUEL GIVE ME FIRE GIMME THAT WHICH I DESIRE!!!!!!!!!!” Fuel came next and had the crowd going equally nuts. I suspected Fuel would be played second, it was alright live…but it really would have been something to see it live back when I just burned my first mix cd with Fuel -- back when I really loved it.
Harvester Of Sorrow was third, another gem that I was hoping against all odds would get played live and of course it did! My voice was practically gone by the time this was over…I sang along all the same though. Pretty funny hearing the recorded version of this cause I notice Kirk and Rob’s questionable backing vocals now. The solo was excellently played….and the silence part lasted longer than a minute -- maddening to no end!!!! ALLLLLL HAVE SAID THEIR PRAYERS!!!!!!!!!….etc….booming!!!…just booming…it was great. Out of all the live clips I’ve seen/heard I’m glad I got to experience it live for myself.
Afterwards Kirk did his first solo doodle thingy…I kept flashing back to the Live Shit videos where he went off doing that guitar-godlike soloing. It was every bit as awesome as I expected from Kirk. HE WENT NUTS FOR ABOUT 3 MINS!!!!!!!! He went from metal..to blues…to even a little funkish riff. Top notch. That was some really good shit….

Then we saw the stage crew bring out an acoustic guitar and we started freaking out because we KNEW it meant The Unforgiven!!! And sure enough it was played for the Third time in North America in 10 years!!! Thanks Metallica/rock gods...I never, ever imagined I'd get to hear it live!!!! Sang along to this one like I’d never heard it before…I can scarcely believe there was a time when I used to change the channel when this song came on Loud. No joke…this was one of the most stunning things I’ve ever had the luck to witness. They played it live shit style beginning with the Spanish acoustic riff, I couldn’t believe it…it was only the 5th song after all. James’ vocals weren’t like Live Shit by any means…less gruff and serious, I guess…nonetheless it was an awe-inspiring performance. And at the very end of the song he sang the ‘you labeled me” line twice…once melodic and the next time it was with force. The man still has it…Unforgiven was different. But pretty damned good to this day!

For Frantic they asked us to be one giant Metallica instrument and we were only to willing to ablige…. quote, James: “Snare – Lars…Hey – Metallica instrument!!!” “Ottawa…I have faith in you!!!!….”
We did the HEY! Part as loud as possible…pretty damned fun.
Frantic blew the speakers and had the BEST reaction out of all the St.Anger songs played. Great Live tune, I ran out of breath and further screwed up my voice by screaming the 'Frantic-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tock' part. I was actually looking forward to hearing this song if I had to hear a St.Anger song that night. Awesome live track…I’ve never hated frantic. Kirk and Rob’s backing vocals struck again “You live it or lie it!!! You Live it or lie it!!!!” *Sigh* It was great, but man Kirk/Rob can crack you up. “This search goes on…. sing it Ottawaaaa!!!!!!!” The next song was my favorite off of Reload, The Memory Remains!!! I was speaking to Patrick when this song started so it caught me off guard, but I recognized it right away and couldn’t help but smile. James had been at the mic saying “now is the point in the set where I get to say something really cool and clever….but I forgot was I was going to say so I’ll just say this…….FORTUNE, FAME, MIRROR VANE!!!! GONE INSANE, BUT THE MEMORY REMAINS!!!!!!” Again, this was a song I never expected to ever hear live.... especially not my first time seeing Metallica. I was overjoyed to say the least…. awesome live song…and Kirk and Rob sang the lalalala part too LMAO!!!! Kirk’s little solo bits in the song were all-perfect!!! James’ vocals weren’t as good as S&M, but hey….it was still excellent. no fuck ups or anything. By this point in the set I’d learned that if you plug your ears for a moment you could hear James vocals way better. So there….”Lalalalalala…sing it Ottawa!!!…lalalalala….its up to you. Sing it!!!!” And we did…the end part with the lalala fade out was surreal!!!!! Wherever I May Roam was next, another I never really thought I'd hear...this set list had me rethinking all the realistic 'set lists' I'd dreamed up waiting for this show. Awesome live tune!!!! Pretty normal in performance…but I never really thought about hearing it live. It was a perk of the set list for sure. Pretty damned good vocals on this one…I could tell James likes performing this song.
St. Anger, Good live...though I would have liked to hear Shoot Me Again instead. Heh, no worries though...Ottawa was SPOILED tonight!!!! (Note: I typed that one month ago today…lol…Actually I would have been freaking out to The Ecstasy of Gold right about now 8:33pm) Not really too much to say on this one either….James did something pretty cool towards the end of this song, he got on his knees into the prayer position in one of the beams of light and prayed for a few seconds…To St.Anger? To God? To the rock gods? Who knows…? It looked pretty intense though. They started St.Anger with all the St.Anger riffy things and James sang ‘St.Anguh round my neck….’ Then it all started. Some pyro went off during this too.
Then was Junglessence…God, that was some crazy base slapping. Robs quite a bassist…the solo reminded me of some predator cat (like a lion) prowling the jungle…you know, creeping around confidently always ready to pounce!!!! It was aptly titled I guess…I loved it!!! Awesome moody solo he’s got there…at one point it even sounds as if he’s tapping it out!!! I hope it ends up used on an album or otherwise. Rob snuck in a quick bit of …And Justice For All about four minutes in and then something amazing happened… they managed to fit a chunk of ORION into it!!!! I was shivering.... literally shivering…that spacey baseline is eerie. In fact I’ve got that shiver again now just listening to it. Love Orion!!!! I can remember looking up to the seats just as they lit up their lighters and held em' real high…exact moment Kirk’s lead guitaring jumped in and played along...and no joke, if you looked around to the seats above you all the flames in the dark looked like constellations!!! It was nuts...live is how Orion was meant to be played. No doubt about it. In one word -- FANTASTIC!!!!!…That was my most shivery moment of the whole night. I lost it on the floor...I was totally stiff as a board listening to it. I could not believe it.
Welcome Home (Sanitarium) Crazy audience reaction!!!! I could tell I'm not the only one who wanted to hear it!!!! The “LEAVE ME THE FUCK ALONE!” part was awesome as ever. “REACH FOR ME OTTAWA!!!!!!!” And man did we ever reach!!!!….James loves that song, I love that song…. Does anyone hate Sanitarium? Not much chance…. W ant to help count in a song Ottawa?….FUCK YEAH!!!!…Wanna count Fast or Slow?….Did you say slow?….Fast then!!!….Well uh…if we count it in fast we’re going to play a FAST song then…alright… “1 2 3 4!!! 1 2 3 4!!!!!!!!! 1 2 3 4!!! 1 2 3 4!!!!!!!!…..” Patrick figured it was Creeper from the count in bit, he was so hoping for it. I’m glad they played it though…I doubt I could live not being able to chant DIE! DIE! With Metallica and my fellow Ottawa Metallica fans…the solo also killed!!!! Creeping Death blew me and everyone around me away!!!! We all started chanting DIE! DIE! Practically before the solo ended!!!! The was a bit of a pause to let us Shout it as much as we wanted. Picture this….13000 devil horns pointed skyward, voices together in one commen chant of DIE! DIE! MUTHERFUCKER DIE!!!! It was FUCKING LOUD! I couldn't believe it was back on the set list for Ottawa. James sung the outro guitar bit to this…that ‘Whaaaaooohoahooahh…whaaaaooahyeah!’ part and so did the audience…it kicked maximum ass.

The intro caught me at one on my most evil-metal-crazed-intense moments ever…I didn’t shiver or anything, this was damned intense…I was so ready for it. I needed Fight Fire With Fire so damned bad. Metallica continued to make dreams come true for those of us on the other side of the barricade...FFWF got me going pretty damned well...gotta love the old shit. It sure separated the newbie fans from the truly dedicated... Again, I NEVER, EVER IN MY WILDEST DREAMS expected to hear FFWF!!! It was thrashy as hell!!!!!! Singing and thrashin’ around for this one was awesome…it was damned fast…but you should have seen all the thrash/old school fans. At the end there was a quick burst of about 7 fireballs from the pyro…all in all the metal was more intense than the being 5 feet from the heat. “ARE YOU ALIVE?? HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE ALIVE!?…. OTTAWA…HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE ALIVE???….OH YEAH?….THEN SHOW ME!!!!!!!!!” And we fuckin did….Kirk was right in front me when he started tearing up the fret board in a blisteringly hot solo.
Kirk did muted strums while James led the audience in a crazily Clear rendition of the Sad But True chorus just like on Live Shit’s Mexico City disks…amazingly clear and well heard with no backing guitars. When the guitars did cut in we all started doing the HEY! HEY! HEY! HEY! Thingy….it was a true classic...gotta love that riff...gotta love feeling it vibrate your ribcage through the floor. ;D Does anyone not like Sad But True? I started head banging during this one…just letting my hair fly…

Scott claimed it was going to be Enter Sandman (My bet is that his subconscious mind told him NEM would never come….plus he was also nervous about his banner not being signed, I cut the guy slack…but really? What else could it have been but NEM? Lol…).Anyhow…Melbourne has really grown on me since the show. It’s just so calm and surreal…it has the same kind of effect as Return To Serenity by Testament on me. Not an easy feat to accomplish at a Metallica show (Espescially right after Sad But True!!!)….but it was definitely very, very calm during Melbourne and NEM. I’m going to have to learn the riff to it some day…It’s really catchy…so much that it makes me hope there will be another ballad in the future. These riffs are a no fail…it’d be a hit with Metallica fans for sure. It’s short, but I’m sure the boys could make it great.
Melbourne blended into the intro to Nothing Else Matters.... Scott really wanted to hear it. Actually, most of the guys claimed they’d start to cry is they heard it or Fade To Black…luckily they held it together pretty well. I must admit when it started I was in shock…I’ve listened to it in the car before and been close to tears from the studio version. It’s amazing to be so damned choked up over a song…and it’s not even a bad choked up, just one that's sort of caught in amazement. Well deserved I suppose, not many songs can have that much of an emotional reaction on that many people. All the lighters went up in the air and gave the Corel Center quite a vibe during that song. We started swaying for the first verse over at the corner I was at, but that died out pretty quickly. It was all about singing along on that one. Not to mention if you’re the cool Metallica fan gal in a group of guys you get the special treatment…a little extra attention really. (Any other girls notice that at their shows?)

Something hit me when Master Of Puppets began -- My all time favorite Metallica song was being played live right in front of me!!! ....so I was jumping all around and head banging like I didn’t have school tomorrow. It was EXCELLENT live, I air guitared the bulk of the song and I swear I saw James give me a funny look like 'Hey, quit copying me...' or something...lol...it was really funny…It was like a cheeky eye contact smile like. “You’re a chick and you made it to the front and now you’re showing off that you can play it too?…cool.” That one stupid chin-chuck will stay with me for the rest of my life (as with Chad from Nickleback…now I understand exactly what he meant!!!) He sang one line and would let the audience sing the next along with the MASTER! MASTER! Part….I can’t put into words how long the idea has festered in my mind of how fucking cool it would be to be at a show SHOUTING it with Metallica and the rest of the audience. Now I know and it was well worth it….Then came the moment of truth…*holds breath remembering* They played the FULL version and we all sang along with the solo!!! It was awesome!!…. Truly stunning…me and Patrick probably sounded horrible because of our lack of any voice left, but man was it ever fun…voice or not, Master of Puppets live is not something you *just* listen to. By the third verse I was so wrapt up in Master….I never ever imagined I’d get to see it live. It’s always surreal to hold a ticket in your hands and watch a Metallica live clip. It’s never quite real until they’re playing right in front of you making eye contact.
During One the pyro was spectacular!!!!! Really.....it was absolutely INSANE!!!!!!....if you think you've seen pyro during video clips of One on DVD, Then you've obviously not witnessed it live. I was so close to the explosions that I could feel heat rush at me every time one went off!!! Listening to it again now I hear all the explosions and sound effects…..it’s amazing. I can still feel the heat from the pyro. ....Best part of the whole song: DARKNESS! IMPRISONING ME! ALL THAT I SEE ABSOLUTE HORROR!!!.... And “Fed through the tube that STICKS IN ME!!!!!!!!” Etc....amazing crowd singing on this! James was particularly intense and focused I specifically watched Kirk play the solo on this…he was at the left corner of the stage -- surreal to watch in person!!!
After a little intro doodle thingy, the one from earlier this year, Enter Sandman began! The whole audience.... yes, even the seat goers, who had been silent until now....went nuts, and with good reason too. Great song, wicked live!!!! Of course I had to see it live.... After this I believe Rob did an insane base spin.... Quite amusing to see:

During the break between Sandman and the encores they threw picks. I remember seeing the Black St.Anger pick hit me and then fall to the ground. So I picked it up really fast and swiped it into my pocket literally shaking at the fact I’d caught one. Then Niclas came by (checking yet another Metallica goal off the list.) and took a picture of me and Patrick holding up my banner:

All it took was White out, gold spray paint, a black flag, the scary guy stencil and excitement and insomnia. I was quite proud to see myself so prominently displayed on Metontour.com (Right after the show by like 1am too!!!).
…and the Niclas handed three picks to Patrick, two of which he passed on to me. I could have went to heaven right there and then….I absolutely could not believe how many amazing moments I’d just had in like 2 minutes!!!!. And as luck would have it only got better and better….I caught two picks total from Rob and two total from Kirk!! But when I saw Scott reaching out for a pick and not get one I couldn’t be selfish…I placed a St.Anger pick in his hand and made eye contact (He seemed a little surprised, but happy all the same…ha…like anyone is going to refuse a Metallica pick!!!)...He didn't catch any, and man, there was no one else in that whole arena who deserved one more than Scott. Thanks for the picks Metallica!!!! I know you helped a little too rock gods… :-*
Not to mention Metallica checked out all our signs and banners...I made eye contact with every member of the band at least once and briefly spoke to James and Kirk…(well shouted, but meh…) they gave us the thumbs up and James was kind enough to sign Scott’s banner. He went stiff as a board and had a smile a MILE LONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ...I gotta tell you, these guys are 100% real...Seeing them live makes you love what they do just that little bit more!!!!
Metallica came back on and James took the mic, I was bracing myself for a surprise encore...I'd expect no less from Metallica. They started playing the intro to The Frayed Ends of Sanity!!!! So I was convinced they were going to play it…. I was so damned stoked…I turned to Patrick wide eyed and went ‘HOLY SHIT!!!!’ along with them. He was really excited too because he grabbed HUGGED ME at that point. LMAO!!!! Of course this was but a teaser…after a couple OOOOOOOEEEEEOOOOO’s they stopped…. It was maddening!!!!!! Sure enough they rose to the challenge and did not disappoint...they played The Prince!!! :o I'm a HUGE Diamond Head fan so this was an excellent encore in my opinion!!!! But my one problem is the lack of singing along with this song...whatsamatter Ottawa? Don't know The Prince lyrics??? >:( *Sigh* Metallica need to play it more often and burn it into everyone's memory.
And last but not least: Seek And Destroy, a great way to end a great show!!! I was dead tired and thirsty during this song and I managed to spend what little energy I had left and I wouldn't have had it any other way!

| Okay - fucking fine! Here is my Brisbane review. I can't find it, so I'll post it as best as I can remember what happened.
Okay, formalities of flying up there aside, I was a 16 year old with one hell of a love for Metallica, and having last seen them in Chicago of all places in 2000 (visiting relatives), I was incredibly hyped up! We flew into Brisbane at around 2 in the afternoon, and just bummed about the place before finding a place to stay the night at to leave our stuff at. At around 4pm, we made our way to an already massive line forming outside the Entertainment Centre, which was freakin awsome! My mate's dad got a "DIE DIE DIE DIE!" Chant going, and I was one of the few that added in the "MOTHERFUCKER!" Bit... It made me feel special. Anyway, I think the doors opened at around about 7pm... This was over 2 and a bit years ago, and I have long since lost my ticket stubs in various room cleanouts, I don't even remember the opening band... I was there to see Metallica, fuck the rest!
Anyway, opening band aside, then it was time to bring out the bigs guns! We were in general - but dads being there, not in the thick of things. I had two more shows to see that week - plently of time for getting in the thick of things. Anyway, it would have been around 8:30 - 9pm, the light's dimmed and that haunting Ecstacy of Gold came one over the speakers, and 10,000 devil horns went up into the air, people were going nuts, and I just had my breath held as to what the opener would be... Blackened? Battery? Fire? Shit! What? But then there was a short pause after Ecstacy had faded, and those fucking guitars went up, all decency just went out the door. James jumped out for the opening killer riff of Fight Fire With Fire, and anyone that says that it's not that good live has no idea - it was beyond insane, Lars went nuts in the climax, and the dual solo was insane. Well they didn't even slow down before launching right into another suprise: The Four Horsemen, which again went off. At this point I was begging to charge into the mosh, and then Jaymz announced Ride The Lightning, and about 300 people had the same idea and belted into the mosh, which for the height of the song turned into a seething mass of crazy's! But then the lights dimmed, and the spotlights came on, which could mean several songs, but me being a setlist guru knew full well. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) came on, and got - I swear - the biggest cheer of the night. I was in tears half the way through, then just went crazy when the "BRISBANE! LEAVE ME THE FUCK ALONE!" blasted out of Papa Het's vocal chords. That was crazy...
The band chilled out for a minute or two before the next song was tuned in, and the once described "heaviest number known to mankind" was blasted out, and hearing Lars hat that loose, and Jame's voice that freay, it really did meet that. The Thing That Should Not Be, just went off. Then we had our little "test", to see if we were worthy. And we just knew, why toy with us? Frantic just tore the place to bits, people just went insane! Jaymz killed the suspense by yelling out "I'm your dream", and we knew that it was coming, and Sad But True really knocked the wind out of me. Probably the second heaviest mosh of the night. Then we had a little crowd pleaser, and one hell of a suprise, with Dirty Window being played. Kirk added in a gun of a solo, and that was met very warmly. Just as things seemed to be getting as good as possible, we were told "Now for some justice..." And it had to be... And yes, it was Harvester of Sorrow, man that scared me... The classics were out in force. By this time I had weaved my way into the thick of it. And for the next song... Not good. The first explosion nearly deafened me... Then there was another minute of them... One was coming, and I was ready, and when Kirk nailed that solo into the ground, just nailed it, I gave him the horns, and the fucker gave them back! But then, then was the shocker. The echo - that's what got me. I was cheering the loudest when that mean fucker Damage Inc. was churned out so much faster than God meant it to be. It was just crazy - my favorite song! Holy shit!
The band said their bye's, but fuck them, they had another hour left! And sure enough they leapt back out for the crowd pleaser of the night, Seek and Destroy. Then again those damn lights went down, which meant Fade or Nothing. Well, we got Nothing Else Matters, and the responce was huge! I hugged everyone around me, and they returned them with just as many tears in their eyes. But then it came Creeping Death!!!, and I lost my voice on the "DIE DIE DIE!" part. Which sucked, because even though they said they were done, we all knew they were fuckin' liers!
James wandered out and teased with us before, laughing: "hahahaha RIFF!" and blasting out that mean motherfucker ST ANGER! And Lars went crazy! But then those green lights came on, not lasers, just lights, and we got a MAAAAAAAAAASSIVE version of Enter Sandman. Not huge in that it was longer, it was just in-fucking-sane. Nothing on DVD compared to this! Then it was scary, because with the classics done, what else was left? The goodbyes were sad, and we thought they were gone!
But then the lights dimmed once more! And then it was a gamble, now they could play anything! What would it be?
"Brisbane... I have something to say..."
MY GOD! FUCK YEAH! LAST CARESS!!! and that went crazy! The crowd was so pumped, because we knew that after this there was only going to be one more! I heard all sorts of shouts for last songs! DYERS EVE! DISPOSABLE HERO'S! All sorts of shit. But Jaymz was firm, and with feedback still ringing, he said what we didn't want to hear, but then what we did:
"Brisbane, thank you for having us! KILL 'EM ALL!" Then about a 3 second delay for HIT THE LIGHTS!, Lars sat on the double bass the whole time (think Cunning Stunts), and it went off! What a finish! It was just crazy, the setlist was choc-full of the best of the best. And after watching a year and a half of setlists - this one was still the best! Despite no Puppetz, it was still an awsome show! |
