well if they start recording around feb after having a break from touring and shit, id say it should come out about september or november 2005. I guess thats if the album takes about 6 months to record and everything else goes according to plan. Personally I also cant wait for their new live dvd to come out. They better have songs like dyers eve, disposable heroes and trapped under ice on it. Either was its gonna fucking tear a new ass ;D

great list to man, but maybe a little weak with The Unforgiven 2   9/10

Breadfan
Master of puppets
No remorse
The Outlaw of torn
Some kind of monster
For whom the bell tolls
I dissapear
Wherever I may roam
Trapped under ice
Creeping death

Fade to black
---------------------------
Phantom Lord
Dirty window
The thing that should not be
---------------------------
Blackened
Fuel
One
Enter Sandman
Dyers eve
---------------------------
Purify
Sweet amber

To be Honest, all these lists are great, 'caus it's what the fans (Us) want. they are bound to be great!!  :D

But, i'd give yours 9/10, mainly 'caus I don't like St. Anger (IMO) therefore, finishing on 2 st. Anger songs wouldn't be my cuppa tea.

My Freind of Misery
*Ununsually long guitarsolo/jam

Disposeable Heroes (to replace MoP)

I have the Peoria show on 8/24/2004 that kicks ass. I'm almost positive that was the first time they've played Trapped Under Ice since that one time in 2000.

I felt like starting a prediction for rare songs being played live. As you all know during this tour Metallica has whipped out Dyers Eve, Disposable Heroes, The Call of Ktulu, The God That Failed, The Unforgiven, Trapped Under Ice etc... but there are still songs left to play.

List only the rare songs they haven't played yet and you are confident they will play before the tour ends.

I think :

-My World
-The Struggle Within
-...And Justice For All

-Escape (don't think they'll play it but I wish!!)

Has anyone else noticed that Lars has dropped alot of the double bass parts out of Metallica's live songs.  I saw them in August in Peoria, IL and Larz didn't play the double bass parts in Battery, St. Anger, or Fight Fire With Fire.  But he did play it at the end of Fade to Black.  I wonder if he's getting too old......?

yes. yes it is.

can anyone guess the shortest *original* Metallica song? i know the longest is "to live is to die", at 9 minutes and something.
My guesses go to Metal Militia or Trapped Under Ice. I mean anyone could look it up, but I'm guessing without cheating.

ME AND MY BRO play in a band(im the drummer, hence the name drumsteen and my bro is the guitarist) and when we jam we play whiplash, motor breath, hit the lights, the four horsemen, fight fire with fire, trapped under ice, fade to black, creeping death, battery, puppets, damage inc., blackened, harvester, dyers eve, sandman, fuel, st. anger, frantic and sweet amber. When we have played live we have covered with our band battery, damage inc. and st. anger(Metallica), raining blood, angel of death (slayer), all hail the new flesh (strapping young lad) eeyore and intro of (sic) (slipknot) self bias resistor (fear factory). and future breed machine(double kick mid-section (meshuggah).

You can barely hear it on the recordings from Live Metallica.com but its there on Trapped Under Ice.  But maybe i wasnt being clear before.  Im talking about the double kick part near the end of Battery leading up to Larz's little two bar drum solo.  There's no double kick there and there's definetly no double kick on fight fire with fire.  Who knows? maybe that night he didnt play them for some reason.  From what I've heard so far, he played those parts every other time.

Posted by drumsteen on 11/10/04 @ 12:06 AM    Post subject: Re: Playing Metallica

I started playing metallica songs when i started playing drums in in jan 2000. I was lucky to be able to start using a double kick pedal, whereas a lot of other drummers start with a single pedal and eventually switch to double kick. Their left foot may not have been as strong or controlled as the right. Any ways, me and my brother have been jamming on tallica songs for years. We have almost learnt every song from KEM to the black album. Our band has covered damage inc, battery and st. anger live. For me personally the most challenging tallica songs to play on drums are dyers eve, disposable geroes, blackened, st anger (endurance), trapped under ice (non stop double kick!) and maybe shortest straw. But after awhile they aint so hard. Thats just me being obsessed and practicing most their shit for hours a day. Lars' stuff is fun but there is soooo much more challenging stuff to play. He's still a great drummer though. Kewl :P

Album: Ride The Lightning

1. Fight Fire With Fire: A thrashy heavy song about the world ending due to nuclear warfare.  Fast and Aggressive.  On a side note Metallica's first song featuring an acoustic intro. 9/10
2. Ride The Lightning: The first album named song.  Heavy and Thrashy with a nice touch of brutality.  Very catchy catchy song.  Only drawback is that Jaymz's vocals can get irritating. 8.5/10
3. For Whom The Bell Tolls: Heavy song oddly based on an Ernest Hemmingwhey(sp?) STORY.  Heavy and great bass by Mr. Cliff Burton.  No solo which costs it a point but a half point due to the very cool interlude. 9.5/10
4. Fade To Black: The first ballad by Metallica.  Touching lyrics about suicide.  Guitar in this song has amazing emotion.  My favorite of the soft songs. what the hell it gets 10/10
5. Escape: The infamous Escape that has never been played live.  It's a good fast song but a tad bit of a mainstream sound to it.  Good nontheless.  8/10
6. Trapped Under Ice: Much like Escape except faster and heavier.  I still love it. 8.5/10
7. Creeping Death: Fast. Heavy. Brutal. Feirce.  I love it except live it is much better. 8/10
8. Call Of The Ktulu: Awesome instrumental.  My favorite song off of Ride The Lightning.  Sweet bass too.  I love the way this song has the ability to go on for so long but not drag out. 10/10

Ride The Lightning is a must have for any Metallica fan so if you don't have it BUY IT NOW!  Final grade 9/10

St anger gets a 9.5 from me. I also feel that they are playing thrash stuff so fucking good right now. All the fast stuff on st anger is nothing like their old fast stuff. Metallica went through a period during the load and re-load tours where they barely played fast shit, and when they did it was at a pretty slow tempo in comparison to their early years. Whereas now, not only are they playing the likes of dyers eve, disposable heroes, metal militia and trapped under ice, they are playing them fucking just as fast as the 80's. Ive heard a couple of versions of battery, blackened, damage inc and motorbreath etc, from this tour and they are fucking smoke. Hetfields right hand is in overdrive and lars is thrashing on those hi hats like a little danish mother fucker. I love it :P!!!!!!!!!!!

If Metallica set up in a club and played the fastest, thrashiest set ever, what songs would YOU want to hear?

My take on things:
First and foremost, I'd like Whiplash.  Metal Militia, Dyer's Eve, Trapped Under Ice, and Phantom Lord would be awesome too.

Go to I've uploaded the first 7. Unfortunately 35mb.com will only let me upload 35mb and only have ONE account so I couldn't upload it all.  :'(

But the good news is that for each person who downloads off of me I get 1mb more space to upload...so I'll upload more if people want them.  :P

(Ottawa got The Prince, Unforgiven, Fight Fire With Fire, a chunk of Orion, the intro to The Frayed Ends of Sanity, The Memory Remains and lots more good ones!)

Or email me, I can send you specific tracks over MSN...leechers welcome, but I am looking for The God That Failed, Trapped Under Ice, Dyers Eve, Outlaw Torn, Bleeding Me and Damage Inc live ANYWHERE on THE MADLY IN ANGER WITH THE WORLD TOUR. So if you can help me out please let me know.  :-*

Posted by MiniME06 on 10/01/04 @ 07:21 PM    Post subject: Ride the Lightning Lazy Assed Review

Okay, whats next... RTL. Good album, one of my favorites... enough crap, lets get to my even crappier reviews.

1. Fight Fire With Fire - a good song, when i first heard it the intro kinda caught me off guard as not being what i expect from Metallica. This one gets my Trademark grade of a B+ (T).

2. Ride the Lightning - one of my favorite songs, kind of repetetive intro but it's still a great song. who made me god to say... A- ?! well, ITS MY REVIEW, so i said it.

3. For Whom the Bell Tolls - this is a great song and one of my favorites at the moment (RTL is an all time favorite). this song has alot going for it, i especially like the intro. FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS? me, beeyotch.(T) (my crappy "jokes" that make you wanna puke are also my Trademark)

4. Fade to Black - A DEFINITE FAVORITE OF MINE. one of the best rock ballad type songs they got and alot of people would agree with me. (if u don't, ur a muthafukka) this song is getting a muthafukkin' A.

5. Trapped Under Ice - used to be one of my favorites, i "over-listened-to" this song but it still gets a B. Kinda short but we all know how long Metalica songs are so sometimes you need a break from listening to songs 7+ minutes long.

6. Escape - not the best song on the album but it is by no means a bad song. alot of people bash it and it isnt't that popular but im still gonna give it a B or B-, not sure. i'll decide later.

7. Creeping Death - one of the best songs on the album. i'll give it a B+.

8. The Call of Ktulu - another good instrumental, but i like all of Metallica's instrumentals. a bit long but most of it is good. this nice long piece of voiceless crap (crap worthy of god) gets a B.

my overall grade for Ride The Lightning is an A-, deal with it.

1)Ktulu (nice opener)
2)horsemen
3)bells (live)
4)escape
5)trapped under ice
6)motorbreath
7)sanitarium
9)ride
10)blackened
11)one

CD2
11)NEM
12)master
13)battery

14)outlaw
15)damage inc
16)dont tread
17)wolf&man
18)no leaf clover
19)unnamed feeling
20)invisible kid
21)damage inc.
22) ORION

that was one of the hardest lists to choose, and i know ive missed out some of the best, like AJFA, but we need some of thenew stuff..

View entire thread: Metallica songs with a WAH solo
Posted by stormet on 11/29/04 @ 12:51 AM    Post subject: Re: Metallica songs with a WAH solo

You'd be surprised, there's more than a handful of songs WITHOUT wah solos.
Here is some stuff...this 'wah guide' is STRICTLY for solos on the STUDIO albums (not their live renditions), some songs you may think that have wah effects actually have other effects such as delay, flanger, etc.  I've only done their first 5 albums (I didn't include Load and Reload because I'm not too familiar with a lot of those songs aside from the obvious like Fuel, Outlaw, Memory, etc).  This may not be 100% correct but it's pretty close.

Songs with a wah solo:
Hit the Lights
Motorbreath
Anesthesia - pulling teeth (for bass, the whole song is practically a solo)
Phantom Lord
No Remorse
Fight Fire with fire
Trapped Under Ice
Battery
The Thing that should not be
Damage Inc.
...And Justice for All
Eye of the Beholder
Dyers Eve
Enter Sandman
Holier than Thou
Wherever I may Roam
Don't Tread on Me
My Friend of Misery
The Struggle Within

Songs WITHOUT a wah solo:
The Four Horsemen
Jump in the Fire
Whiplash
Seek and Destroy
Metal Militia
Ride the Lightning
Fade to Black
Escape (has delay in some parts, but no wah)
Creeping Death
The Call of Ktulu (has delay in some parts, but no wah)
Master of Puppets
Welcome Home - Sanitarium
Disposable Heroes (has wah in other parts of the song but not in the solo)
Leper Messiah
Orion
Blackened
One
The Shortest Straw
Harvester of Sorrow
The Frayed Ends of Sanity
To Live is to Die
Sad but True
The Unforgiven
Through the Never
Nothing Else Matters
Of Wolf and Man
The God that failed

IF you count the improv. at the end of "For Whom the Bell tolls" then yes, it has wah in it.

REMEMBER, the non-wah solos probably have a different effect to them...so if you think there's wah in it, there actually isn't.

I agree with this list except I am pretty sure that there is a wah used in Leper Messiah after the sweeping. I dont listen to load/reload enough to tell you exact songs, but Kirk did go a little wah crazy in the 90's. But live, you can expect him to touch the wah at least once a song.

Im with crackofbass. Fight fire with fire and trapped under ice are anything but duds. There the heaviest THRASH songs of all time.I liked RIDE THE LIGHTNING better. they both kick ass but speaking in terms of albums i like ride the lightning better.

Agree with the Slayer albums, the Slipknot album and the Pantera album, but Machine Head's album is a load of shiiiiit
really!the first machine head album sounds so much like metallicas old shit. i know they had a patch of some average albums but burn my eyes rocks. the end of none but my own sounds almost identical to trapped under ice. oh well jst my opinion :P

Puppets by far. RTL had a couple of duds (in my opinion, Trapped Under Ice and Fight Fire With Fire), while Master of Puppets had none. Also, the title tracks are WAY different in terms of quality. MoP is just better written in general, except for Fade to Black, which i prefer to Sanitarium. Also, Puppets has the best Metallica instrumental (Orion) as opposed to Call of Ktulu (which is still awesome).

And I've implemented Banaani's list, with a small switch.

These may not be permanent though...

I also had these thought up:

Helpless
Trapped Under Ice
Stone Cold Crazy

I don't think I'll use Helpless though, because some n00bs will think "OMG someone changed my title that's offensive," blah blah blah.

I have a feeling we're gonna be getting some complaints from other sites that we "stole their idea" because they also use similar titles. Oh well.

ok with skydiver.
Fight fire with fire, trapped under ice and escape aren't that great, not to be compared anyway with the thing that should not be, battery or any other song from MOP. Still, the call's awesome, creeping death's a must and fade was the song that made my girl say: "fuck, you're right, these guys are really good".
So, well, of course MOP's better even though Ride's close behind. But I don't think that anybody'll ever write again sumthing like MOP, Leper, Orion or Sanitarium.....

I think it wouldn't be fair to ask a thg. like that, just 'cos there is smthg. damn good in both MOP and RTL. But, if asked, I should say I like RTL a li'll beter. Not because of the techniques used; it's just that there is a "kind of magic" that makes you (or, at least me!!!)feel everything those songs say. As if you were trapped under ice freezin' or strapped in the electric chair waitin' for your death to come... But that doesn't mean I don't like MOP, for God's sake!!!

Hard question.

For one thing, I actually prefer "Fight Fire With Fire" to "Battery.

Let's see how the rest plays out:

FFWF or Battery = FFWF
RTL or MOP = MOP
Bellz or Thingy = Bellz
Sanitarium or Fade = Fade
Ice or Heroes = SO HARD but I say Heroes
Leper or Escape = Leper
Orion or Ktulu = Orion
Creep or Damage = Damage Inc.

Master Of Puppets = 5
Ride The Lightning =3

Yet I feel that the S&M version of "Ktulu" is better than Orion and I feel that sometimes "Trapped Under Ice" is better than "Disposable Heroes" soooo:

THEY ARE EQUALLY TIED AS THE TWO BEST METALLICA ALBUMS.

Fight Fire With Fire - 9.5
(thrash at its finest, one of my favorite riffs ever)

Ride The Lightning - 9
(love it but at some times vocals get annoying)

For Whom The Bell Tolls - 9.5
(one of my favs, i love lars drumming actually and bass is killer!)

Fade To Black - 10
(no explanation needed, just fucking incredible everything)

Trapped Under Ice - 9
(great opening solo, no complaints really)

Escape - 8.5
(underrated as hell, love the sirens, love the chorus)

Creeping Death - 9
(kick ass solo, DIE DIE DIE DIE.. classic)

The Call of Ktulu - 9.5
(amazing instrumental, S&M is even better)

RTL is a top top metal album and I'd give it around a 9.5 for its overall effect.

my ratings:

Fight fire with fire: 9(awesome fucking thrash, hard, heavy, big motherfucker with killer riffs and awesome drum work by mr. ulrich, especially the double kicks after kirks solo)

Ride the lightning: 8(good song but gets a bit boring after awhile)

For Whom the bell tolls: 9,5 (live10+++)(cunning stunts10++++++++++++++++) (a live song, the album version doesn't catch)

Fade to Black: 10 (a legend, three beautiful solos and the outro has made me cry)

Trapped Under Ice: 9 (very good, best climax of the album)

Escape: 7 (i agree with james, the song is boring, worst one  from the first five albums)

Creeping Death: 9 (also a live song, album version isn't that catchy, uneless you listen to it very loud)

Call of Ktulu: 9.5 (all metallica instrumentals are classics, allthough this one is the worst it's still great)

the guys:
Kirk: 10 (great solos)
Lars: 9 (he didn't yet show his true skills in RTL but still good)
Cliff: 10 (call of ktulu, and bellzz great work RIP)
James: 9 (his singing is screaming but that doesn't bother that much great playing)

Same system. 10 the best, 1 crappy (i assure you there wont be a 1) try to give you an unbiased opinion

Fight Fire With Fire-  7. really good, and it started the album with a bang, just compared to the others it doesnt quite deliver.

Ride The Lightning- 8. Another great song. good riffs, (especially the start) unreal solo and good drumming. just a bit machine-like at times.

For Whom The Bell Tolls- 8+half. brilliant song. class bass, OK drums, good enough lyrics and OK solos.
on a whole a really good song.

Fade to Black 10. incredible. Amazing Solos, good drums really good vocals and Cliff was amazing as usual. Well Structured too.

Trapped Under Ice9. brilliant.the Solos are the best from Kirk, and everything else was good too. Great tune.  ;D

Escape 9+half. also incredible and extremely underrated. the sirens at the end have a kind of horrifying sound to them. the chorus is epic. the drum beats are confusing during the good verses. the solos are good too. awesome!

Creeping Death- 7+half. good, but i think its a bit overrated. i like the dual bits and the chorus is pounding, and the verse is OK. good song.

Call of Ktulu- 7. the least best instrumental for metallica but still good. the Solos are some of the best and the general tune is good too. the jam at the end is awesome. a good song. :)

Ride The Lightning(the Album) 9+half. an incredible album. second best in my opinion. it improved dramatically from KEA and should be ranked as one of the best albums ever. the melodic feel to it is awesome and the general feel to it is breathtaking. A breathtaking album in all areas.

KEA = Pulling Teeth
RTL = FFWF or Trapped Under Ice
MOP = Leper Messiah (sorry, I just don't really like it)
Justice = Frayed Ends of Sanity
Black = Struggle Within
Load = Wasting my Hate
Reload = There's so many to choose from, its a tie between Slither, Better Than You, Attitude, and Prince Charming
Garage Inc. = The More I See
St. Anger = Invisible Kid (it would have been decent were it not a ridiculous 8 minutes long)

Posted by cloudnine on 10/25/04 @ 10:47 PM    Post subject: Rate the Albums

Hokay! It's time for one of the toughest exercises I've come across.

It's rating the eight Metallica albums in order of worst to best: KEA, RTL, MOP, AJFA, Black, Load, Reload, St. Anger (studio, original material only - Garage Inc and S&M don't count) - and boy, did I have a tough time.

Consider everything - the songwriting, the music, the general feel of the album - EVERYTHING :P.

Before I start, let me say that I truly DISLIKE no Metallica album (aside from Re-Load). They all have their respective merits - I just want to create controversy!

Here goes nothing:

8. Re-load
I just can't like this album. All the songs except for Fuel (which really gets tired after a few listens), Unforgiven II (just SLIGHTLY below the original in quality) Fixxxer, and parts of Carpe Diem Baby just...suck. There's nothing memorable about any of the other tracks, and all of them are just boring, uninspired, and are generally just sub-par. What's the point of hearing good lyrics if there's no good melodies to put them to?
7. Kill 'em All
While I certainly appreciate that this was their first album and they hadn't really found their sound yet, the lyrics on this one were pretty juvenile. Of course, they were still in their teens - quite excusable. There are some awesome riffs to be found here (Four Horsemen, Hit the Lights, Seek and Destroy) and I don't DISLIKE the album - but it definitely wasn't their best.
6. St. Anger
As we all know, this was a total departure from the "usual" Metallica sound - rough, gritty, and personal, this one totally polarized people. I like this album a lot - but it can get tired after awhile, and let's face it the crafting of the songs wasn't nearly as complex (especially when you look at the guitar tabs) as their earlier work. Like I said - you have to understand the history behind this one to "get" it. Good album - but not their best.
5. Ride the Lightning
Ouch! Putting RTL as their 5th-best album will get me some flack here. However, I feel their second album has definite low points (Trapped Under Ice, Escape) and I can't say I love the title track all that much. Make no mistake - Fade to Black, Creeping Death, Ktulu are all amazing pieces of songwriting - but I feel this album is weaker than their later efforts. Of course, it includes the ultimate crowd-pleaser For Whom The Bell Tolls, too - which is pretty shibby.
4. Black Album
What can be said about this album that hasn't already been said? Mostly abandoning the thrash sound that defined them, hard rock became the flavour of this album - and what a delicious one it was. Incredibly well-designed songs, there's no doubt that this album contains TONS of winners. Aside from all the "big" songs (Sandman, Sad But True, Unforgiven), in here contains the ultimate power ballad of all time in Nothing Else Matters and the killer God that Failed, Friend of Misery, and Through the Never. This album has some duds, though - Struggle Within and Holier than Thou are sub-par compared to the rest.
3. Load
Metallica takes a sharp left turn with this one - but what a gorgeous turn it is. Hetfield's voice is in its best years, with him being able to sing both hard and soft seemingly effortlessly here. Probably the most personal and finely crafted lyrics of any Metallica work, this album contains two incredible epics (Outlaw Torn, Bleeding Me) which are truly gorgeous. Ronnie is another overlooked gem, with incredible lyrics based on a school shooting. I also like the "fight" songs here - Ain't My Bitch and 2x4 are fun deviations from the album's general theme of looking inward to find deeper meaning. Except for The House That Jack Built and Thorn Within, every track on this one is a classic in my eyes.
2. ...And Justice for All
The ONLY thing that kept this one out my the top spot was the production. This album has my favourite Metallica song on it (One) and other killer tracks like Dyers Eve and Blackened. There exists on this album the second-best Metallica instrumental BY A HAIR - To Live is to Die, dedicated to Cliff. My complaints are the bloated nature of some of the cuts (the title track, Shortest Straw) and the obvious shoddy production. The bass is totally nonexistant, and this one has WAY too much treble in all the instruments and the voice.
1. Master of Puppets
Considered Metallica's masterpiece by many, I consider it to be essentially tied with AJFA for best album. The classics are all here - Master of Puppets, Sanitarium, Damage Inc, and the best instrumental ever to grace a Metallica record (Orion). The Thing That Should Not Be is heavyness incarnate, and Disposable Heroes is a precursor to AJFA's One. I can't say I like Battery - I never really could get into it. This album simply has the best song structure of any album of theirs - time changes, interludes, and classic solos reign here.

Like I said - this list was extremely hard to put together, and I can't really say I like MOP over AJFA or vice versa.

Your opinions?

Heres my ratin for shit.. \m/

Fight fire with Fire- Starts off with a nice slow riff, that leads into a burstin, trashy metal tune, 9/10.

Ride the lightning- Very good song, its somthing to pull up at red light and blast beside the old folks beside u in a K Car listenin to the crystals er somthing. Very good solo, amazin.. one of the best Kirks ever composed, yet i do think there cood of been a slow part in the song that would of completed it. 8.4/10

For whom the bell tolls- Amazing song, very very good intro bass riff, good work Cliff.. to bad hes not around to read it! WE SALUTE YOU!, anyhoo, very good song, catchy chorus for sure, but i do think there cood of been a better solo in it besides the ending wah  part there.. 8.1/10

Fade to Black- Yes indeed, one of the best songs MetallicA has ever done. Best solos, very good riffs pickin with the Am C G E pattern there, best pattern ever. nothing else to say, but this has got to be a "must listen". 10/10

Trapped under Ice- Very good and or evil song, good singin, lyrics, very nice riffs indeed, good and fast nice NICe chorus, good work with all, no flaws in this song. but i do give it a 9.7/10

Escape- Very good intro, and chorus, the chorus so very catchy, itl be stuck in your head for months.. its kinda got a slow feelin in it.. but its all distortion.m over all, a 9.6/10

uhh.. what are the others.. OF COURSE!

Creepin death- on of my fav metallica songs of all time, best catchy chorus, nice NICE solo, begin is good, nice intro, and the part were he sings- "die, by my hands....,."
very good work james, ya all did good on that song 10/10..

Call of Ktulu- Yes a very good book by Lovecraft, although one of the best  instrumental song by MetallicA, its kinda.. repitive the first half, but.. its not borin. at all. we salut Ktulu (Cthulhu, original spelling) 9.7/10

OVER ALL, I give this album 9.3!, HAIL METALLICA!!, also i need a bass player thats 11-15 years old and lives in toronto..! METALLICA!
