that order doesn't change too much for me. |

| Hokay! It's time for one of the toughest exercises I've come across.
It's rating the eight Metallica albums in order of worst to best: KEA, RTL, MOP, AJFA, Black, Load, Reload, St. Anger (studio, original material only - Garage Inc and S&M don't count) - and boy, did I have a tough time.
Consider everything - the songwriting, the music, the general feel of the album - EVERYTHING :P.
Before I start, let me say that I truly DISLIKE no Metallica album (aside from Re-Load). They all have their respective merits - I just want to create controversy!
Here goes nothing:
8. Re-load I just can't like this album. All the songs except for Fuel (which really gets tired after a few listens), Unforgiven II (just SLIGHTLY below the original in quality) Fixxxer, and parts of Carpe Diem Baby just...suck. There's nothing memorable about any of the other tracks, and all of them are just boring, uninspired, and are generally just sub-par. What's the point of hearing good lyrics if there's no good melodies to put them to? 7. Kill 'em All While I certainly appreciate that this was their first album and they hadn't really found their sound yet, the lyrics on this one were pretty juvenile. Of course, they were still in their teens - quite excusable. There are some awesome riffs to be found here (Four Horsemen, Hit the Lights, Seek and Destroy) and I don't DISLIKE the album - but it definitely wasn't their best. 6. St. Anger As we all know, this was a total departure from the "usual" Metallica sound - rough, gritty, and personal, this one totally polarized people. I like this album a lot - but it can get tired after awhile, and let's face it the crafting of the songs wasn't nearly as complex (especially when you look at the guitar tabs) as their earlier work. Like I said - you have to understand the history behind this one to "get" it. Good album - but not their best. 5. Ride the Lightning Ouch! Putting RTL as their 5th-best album will get me some flack here. However, I feel their second album has definite low points (Trapped Under Ice, Escape) and I can't say I love the title track all that much. Make no mistake - Fade to Black, Creeping Death, Ktulu are all amazing pieces of songwriting - but I feel this album is weaker than their later efforts. Of course, it includes the ultimate crowd-pleaser For Whom The Bell Tolls, too - which is pretty shibby. 4. Black Album What can be said about this album that hasn't already been said? Mostly abandoning the thrash sound that defined them, hard rock became the flavour of this album - and what a delicious one it was. Incredibly well-designed songs, there's no doubt that this album contains TONS of winners. Aside from all the "big" songs (Sandman, Sad But True, Unforgiven), in here contains the ultimate power ballad of all time in Nothing Else Matters and the killer God that Failed, Friend of Misery, and Through the Never. This album has some duds, though - Struggle Within and Holier than Thou are sub-par compared to the rest. 3. Load Metallica takes a sharp left turn with this one - but what a gorgeous turn it is. Hetfield's voice is in its best years, with him being able to sing both hard and soft seemingly effortlessly here. Probably the most personal and finely crafted lyrics of any Metallica work, this album contains two incredible epics (Outlaw Torn, Bleeding Me) which are truly gorgeous. Ronnie is another overlooked gem, with incredible lyrics based on a school shooting. I also like the "fight" songs here - Ain't My Bitch and 2x4 are fun deviations from the album's general theme of looking inward to find deeper meaning. Except for The House That Jack Built and Thorn Within, every track on this one is a classic in my eyes. 2. ...And Justice for All The ONLY thing that kept this one out my the top spot was the production. This album has my favourite Metallica song on it (One) and other killer tracks like Dyers Eve and Blackened. There exists on this album the second-best Metallica instrumental BY A HAIR - To Live is to Die, dedicated to Cliff. My complaints are the bloated nature of some of the cuts (the title track, Shortest Straw) and the obvious shoddy production. The bass is totally nonexistant, and this one has WAY too much treble in all the instruments and the voice. 1. Master of Puppets Considered Metallica's masterpiece by many, I consider it to be essentially tied with AJFA for best album. The classics are all here - Master of Puppets, Sanitarium, Damage Inc, and the best instrumental ever to grace a Metallica record (Orion). The Thing That Should Not Be is heavyness incarnate, and Disposable Heroes is a precursor to AJFA's One. I can't say I like Battery - I never really could get into it. This album simply has the best song structure of any album of theirs - time changes, interludes, and classic solos reign here.
Like I said - this list was extremely hard to put together, and I can't really say I like MOP over AJFA or vice versa.
Your opinions?
