By the last breath of the fourth winds blow
Better raise your ears
The sound of hooves knocks at your door
Lock up your wife and children now
It's time to wield the blade
For now you have got some company

The Horsemen are drawing nearer
On the leather steeds they ride
They have come to take your life
On through the dead of night
With the four Horsemen ride
or choose your fate and die

You have been dying since the day
You were born
You know it has all been planned
The quartet of deliverance rides
A sinner once a sinner twice
No need for confession now
Cause now you have got the fight of your life

The Horsemen are drawing nearer
On the leather steeds they ride
They have come to take your life
On through the dead of night
With the four Horsemen ride
or choose your fate and die

Time
has taken its toll on you
The lines that crack your face
Famine
Your body it has torn through
Withered in every place
Pestilence
For what you have had to endure
And what you have put others through
Death
Deliverance for you for sure
There is nothing you can do

So gather round young warriors now
and saddle up your steeds
Killing scores with demon swords
Now is the death of doers of wrong
Swing the judgment hammer down
Safely inside armor blood guts and sweat

The Horsemen are drawing nearer
On the leather steeds they ride
They have come to take your life
On through the dead of night
With the four Horsemen ride
or choose your fate and die

Oh, please. You are so full of crap.

If Dave wrote The Four Horsemen, he would've said he did. But no, he has never said he wrote The Four Horsemen.

I said IF DAVE WROTE THE FOUR HORSEMEN, HE WOULD'VE SAID HE DID BY NOW. All I see Dave doing is whining about the riff, I've never seen him ever say he has written the song. (Lyric-wise, like you said he did)

once they kicked dave out, they changed the song he wrote called mechanix, they changed the lyrics around and a few of the riffs and called it the four horsemen. dave then released the mechanix on his first album so that might be why people say they copied of megadeath.

dude, do you know about the mechanix/four horsemen thing?  four horsemen used to be called "the mechanix". it was the same riff, but faster, and had different words.dave wrote it.after he left, metallica changed it to "the four horsemen" and wrote different words for it, and dave ended up putting "the mechanix" on a megadeth album.

I'm gonna follow the trend here and say The Four Horsemen is one of the best tracks on the album. However, I agree on Anaesthesia. Good bass solo, very technical and all but it seems to go on forever and thank god Lars comes in a bit later. I appreciate it for what it is but it's not my kinda thing. Apart from this stuff, awesome review as usual.  :)

The Four Horsemen is the best song on the album followed by Seek and Destroy. Actually I agree with master of orion. Anesthesia isn't that great. well it's a great bass solo but it's soooo boooooring to listen to. i always skip it. i'm not a big fan of Jump In The Fire and Metal Melitia either. i think Phantom Lord is the most underrated on this album. they should play it live a lot more.

on the other hand, many of tallica's songs get shortened, what do you guys think? do they keep shortening these songs or is better to go back and play the album version. e.g. the four horsemen: the album version has slow solo, like MOP has, but when they play this song live, they dont play this part. the same happens with breadfan. usually, they don't play some solos that they think might slow the song down.

Posted by cloudnine on 11/09/04 @ 11:35 PM    Post subject: My Kill 'em All review

I kinda rediscovered this album recently, so I'll offer my thoughts track-by-track:

1) Hit the Lights

With what must amount to one of the most awesome intro riffs in history, this song prepares you for what's to come and is kind of an exhibit of Metallica's skill, with blistering solos and riffs that just kick your ass. Awesome, with some fun lyrics.

9/10

2) The Four Horsemen

One can see the birth of what we know today as Metallica in its infancy on this track. With a kickass intro that while simplistic, really gives the song a feel of galloping. There's enough awesome riffs here for an entire album's worth of today's shitty music. The interlude is quite gorgeous and comes as a contrast compared to most of the rest of the album, with an awesome solo over the slow riff. While some people say this song goes on too long, I find that this song is an example of the total loss of attention span people have today. Back in the day, people took their time with songs, allowing the riffs to come full circle by letting them play out. Probably the song of the album, right here.

10/10

3) Motorbreath

With some of Metallica's punk influence showing here, this three-minute ditty is a fun song about the fast-paced life. I can't help but like this song even though it's kinda lame - it's a guilty pleasure.

8.5/10

4) Jump in the Fire

A nice pump-up song, the intro riff kicks ass and I can't help but love the "Come On!" chorus, as juvenile as it may be. A shorter song, but awesome nonetheless. A kickass solo permeates the middle of the song, adding another layer of sweetness to the track, and a nice lead-out solo. Good stuff.

9/10

5) Anaesthesia (Pulling Teeth)

I can't really say I love this bass solo, because I don't play the instrument. However, it's quite remarkable what Cliff did with a couple of effects that make you think you're listening to a guitar solo. Interesting, but it's a skipper for me.

7/10

6) Whiplash

While possibly containing the lamest lyric Metallica has ever written, even though I still love to hear it ("we'll never stop, we'll never quit 'cause we're Metallica!"), this song is a nice headbanger. Awesome solos throughout, and it's just a fun song in general.

8.5/10

7) Phantom Lord

While it's inherently geeky to be writing about some kind of "Phantom Lord", I still like this song. This one definitely brings the obsession with the word "leather" to the forefront. I really like the short interlude, similar to that of the Four Horsemen - gives us a little break from the thrashing, and is quite melodic - I wish it had lasted a bit longer, with another little solo ditty overtop of it. I can't help but like James' screech at the end, either.

8/10

No Remorse

The only track on the album that even approaches serious lyrics, this one has an AWESOME intro riff and delves into the lack of remorse one begins to develop for one's deeds after being sent to war. This would be the precursor to the trend of anti-war songs that continued with Disposable Heroes and One, but is obviously not even close to the standards those songs set. I love the chorus, and it hits home pretty hard considering the rest of the album's demeanor. You can hear the lack of mercy in James' lyrics when he sings "No Remorse, No Regret". Nice one, guys.

9.5/10

9) Seek and Destroy

The song everyone knows from this album and has become a staple in their live shows, Metallica brings us another fun "fight song" with a great chorus to get crowds pumped and chanting. While the lyrics are repetitive and silly, the riffs are downright infectious and get under your skin until you just GOTTA hear this song one more time.

9.5/10

10) Metal Militia

The album's final call-to-arms for metalheads, this one has the ridiculously insane fastpaced intro we all know. I don't love this song, it's a fun headbanging way to end the album, though. I like a couple of the riffs, but I think it's a weak point of the album.

7.5/10

To conclude, I think this album is pretty darn awesome. Yes, the lyrics are juvenile, bordering on ridiculous at times - and dammit, enough about leather! The production is pretty poor, but its to be expected with the situation of the time. I actually like the shoddy production of the album - I prefer these versions to the live ones, and I can't explain it other than it's just so...honest and no-bullshit.

Still, it's a monumental step in defining and shaping metal into the force it was in the 80s and early 90s. Even though it's not their best album, it's still incredibly fun to listen to and is a great headbanger all the way through!

In terms of the songs getting shortened, they now play the full version of Master Of Puppets. I wish they would play Breadfan with the interlude. The Four Horsemen is a bit long as is, but hearing the full version would be nice. I don't like the bridge being cut out of Battery. I miss that. Also in Blackened, they cut out the bridge after the solo before the verse. That part was critical since you could hear the riff without the lyrics. They need to play the full version of AM I Evil? as well. It's a great song in its entirety.

The Four Horsemen: 10 (killer riffs great lyrics, works awesome live)

Motorbreath: 9 (fast! great drumsolo in the beginning, also awesome live song)

Jump in the fire: 8 (a bit boring but still good, great solo)

Anesthesia(Pulling Teath): 8 (cliff shows what he can do, but four minute bass solo; it gets a little boring)

Whiplash: 10 (it's fucking whiplash motherfuckers, live songs top three, very fast and heavy, awesome all the way)

Phantom Lord: 9 (good, fast; great lyrics)

No Remorse: 8 (a bit boring, great solos by mr. hammet)

Seek and Destroy: 10 (also in live songs top three)

Metal Militia: 8 (great and fast song, with catchy lyrics, but there is something missing)

Kirk: 10 (great solo work)
Lars: 9 (drumming is good but it could be better)
Cliff: 9 (I don't like pulling teath that much, but his playing is great no question about it)

I DO think Dave Mustaine is a moron. Let's say, hypothetically, he did write all the stuff he claims to have (which I have issues with anyway). So what? While Kill 'em All was an awesome album, let's not pretend it's Metallica's best.

Mustaine is a fucking idiot for releasing Mechanix YEARS after the Four Horsemen. Mechanix is a terrible song, while the Horsemen is a classic.

It's my opinion that Mustaine is just terribly bitter about being kicked out of Metallica. He has noone to blame but himself, though - he had drug problems at the time, and Metallica wasn't into that (yet =/), so they gave him the boot.

Let's face it - Megadeth isn't as good as Metallica. There, I said it. Most people would agree - Megadeth's sound just isn't as refined, the songs aren't as well penned, and Dave Mustaine's voice is no great shakes - it can go from a whine to a REALLY fake snarl in seconds.

I haven't seen the Some Kind of Monster interview with him, but I bet it'll just be him whining about how Megadeth never achieved the success of Metallica and then give excuses about it.

He needs to grow up.

No one stole anything, Dave claimed he had a big part of some songs, but no songs did he write completely.  The four Horsemen was a big part of what Dave wrote but Dave got threw out, they slowed it down, changed some parts and changed the lyrics, Metallica always said it was Daves idea but Dave was kicked out and they used the material.  Cliff added his style too it and Kirk added his style.  Its just Megadeth fans who dont like Metallica creating shit but he had alchohol problems and growing heroin addictions which were getting on James and Lar' nerves because James and Dave would fight alot on stage and had alot of disagreements.  Dont hate Metallica for kicking him out cos' anyne else would have kicked him too the kurb.  Love them for kicking him out and inspiring him too create Megadeth, after all there wouldnt have ever been a Megadeth without Metallica.  Also, it wasnt Metallicas fault why he got kicked, even when he created Megadeth, there has been constant disputions and arguements and changes in the Band ebcause people disagree with his addictions and his ideas, plus hes also been in rehab so doesnt that tell you how bad he was and how fucked up he was ???  No one copied anyone, they both used material they had.

First off the entire truth about Mustaine getting kicked out of Metallica has never been released to the public. If you read more, you'd know that. Second without the Mechanix there would be no horsemen. The reason why it took him a year after Metallica to release the song (Killing is My Business was released in '84) was because he had to get signed first. You can't just go out and record a song and put it on a record and then have it be sold in stores. Besides what the hell does when the song was released on an ablum have to do with anything? He still wrote the fucking thing. Metallica did a great job re-writing the lyrics and adding the bridge, but it didn't really change any after that. In my opinon, YOUR OPINIONS FUCKING SUCK!!!

Let me guess, Kirk isn't "too good at soloing" because Mustaine wrote all the stuff he plays.

For someone who seems to have read up on a lot of stuff about the bands, I'd expect less outrageous comments from you. (ex: Mustaine writing The Four Horsemen lyrics)

stealing songs from others (not only from dave mustaine, but kirk also stole most of the concepts for creeping deth from his prevoius band, exodus i believe, and exodus didnt use any of the material that kirk helped write until metallica pulled that stunt. and also thier napster stunt. how did they get known again? underground music trading. what was napster? underground music trading. any more brain busters?

How can Kirk steal something HE WROTE? That's not stealing.

So what if they made it big by underground music trading? They didn't have any records when they were big in the underground scene, how else do you think they would've become popular. (FYI, the No Life 'til Leather demo tape was what made them big in the underground scene). When you realise actual records, people are supposed to buy them, not just walk into the store and take them. (Which is what downloading music is pretty much)

And about that whole thing... they dropped the suit, in case you didn't know. And Lars has recently mentioned in interviews he doesn't mind downloading music anymore, he even went on to talk about how he has his own MP3 player with downloaded music.

lars is as much of a dick as anyman could every hope to be. and he also sucks at drums. im kinda wondering why he didnt want a certian scene to be used in the "somekind of monster movie"...

Are you an idiot? What scene??

It was Dave that didn't want a "certain" scene to be in the movie, not Lars.

Do some more reading, kid. That is, if your parents let you.

As lars has said, in order for something to be fast and heavy it needs to be next to some that is slow and melodic. I think its great dynamics. It slows down the tempo of the song so when the next part kicks back in it has more of an impact and can make it sound faster/heavier when coming after such a stripped down section. Same thing is done in songs like outlaw torn, breadfan, fade to black, the four horsemen etc. I like it

-The four horsemen (first 'tallica song i ever heard still my favourite)

-Sweet amber because its the kind of song i would play at a wedding

And im gonna break the rules and add a sixth one because you cant stop me.

Personally, I think the Who's "Behind Blue Eyes" would be freaking epic.

there's a few songs i think should sound great with an orcestra: The Four Horsemen, Seek and Destroy, Creeping Death, Fade To Black, Sanitarium, Harvester of Sorrow. it would have been great if they had those in S&M. or can you imagine how St. Anger and Franitc would sound like with an orcestra? :P

there are no bass "solos" on KEA other than pulling teeth
but then if u listen to the beginning of the slow part of "the four horsemen", there is a piece that stands out...
it's actually pure Geezer Butler worship by Burton.....
the next one's not on KEA but on RTL...the intro          into "For whom the Bell tolls" is actually bass...dunno how many of u know that....

The whole album of kill 'em all is freakin fun to play, espesially The four horsemen, Master of Puppets, and one of the songs i started with For whom the Bell tolls, this is a really good song for begginers it's all really easy if you can nail the riff that goes:

e-----------------------------------
b-----------------------------------
g---12--9--10------9--10---
----
d----------------12-----------------
a-----------------------------------
E-------------------------------

Posted by MiniME06 on 10/01/04 @ 06:11 PM    Post subject: Kill 'Em All Lazy Assed Review

although ive heard all of these songs many times, im listening to them at the time of review so i cant listen to the whole song again to make the best grade, but ill try. good thing i dont want to be a teacher. i !@$%ing hate kids.

1. Hit the Lights - "NO LIFE 'TILL LEATHER, WE'RE GONNA KICK SOME ASS TONIGHT!" good song, pretty heavy, nothing really wrong with it that i can think of, i'll give it an B+.

2. The Four Horsemen - another good song, this one gets a B+ as well.

3. Motorbreath - "THE SIGN OF LIVING FAST!" this is probably the first Kill 'Em All song i've heard, and one of my favorite. it gets alot of low scores on other reviews, but i like it and this is my review so i'm giving it an A-!

4. Jump in the Fire - "SO C'MON, JUMP IN THE FIRE!" like this song as well, not my favorite on the album, but i like all the songs on this album so i'm giving it a plain old B.

5. (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth - a good bass solo, it is not my favorite on the album but i do listen to it from time to time. hard to grade it. i'll give it a B-, i know this is bordering in "average" but i have to grade it according to everything before it.

6. Whiplash - a decent song, not my favorite on the album but i repeat myself by telling you that i like every song on the album. i'm gonna slap a nice little B on this tune.

7. Phantom Lord - it took me a long time and until reading a post in this forum i never really listened to this song. it's a good song and i'm glad i saw that post. i'll give this one a B+ because it is not widely recognized as a good song.

8. No Remorse - a pretty good song, not the best on the album but it would get a very high grade if it wasnt surrounded by so many other good songs. a B seems pretty fair.

9. Seek & Destroy - "SEARCHING, SEEK AND DESTROY!" this is also one of the first Kill 'Em All song i heard and it became one of my favorites. i listen to it now and it is a little bit boring like some other people say, but it is still a very good song. it gets another plain old B.

10. Metal Militia - another one of the better songs on the album, its hard for me to give an A to any song even tho i love metallica so this one gets a B+.

Crap almost forgot, overall album grade is a... B+

i guess it didnt turn out as lazy as i thought, i just expected to write the score i gave it, but that didn't work out did it?

I'm not saying that the ends of the songs are bad, but the end should just come sooner, not that i want the songs to be short, either. The Four Horsemen is a good example of how I think songs should end, with a very clear climax and lots of energy, as opposed to a decline in energy well after the climax in the song.

Posted by BTHTDB82 on 12/05/04 @ 08:06 PM    Post subject: Re: My rant against MegafanKIMB

i like metallica. aslong as its pre blackalbum. everything else by them sucks. mustaine wrote everyversion of the 4 horsmen/mechanix. the only thing james and lars wrote was a revised exit solo. the mechanix lyrics are not bad. they rock. its true to someones life. he entirely wrote everysong on the first 2 albums that has his name on it. anytime you hear the "spider riff" its a mustaine song.
First off explain to me what a Spider Riff is, if you even know. Have you listened to the Mechanix on Kill is My Business and Business is good or did someone just tell you it was on there? The Four Horsemen has an added bridge and the lyrics were completely rewritten by James. Lars wrote the drum part and Ron wrote the bass part. Dave wrote the guitar part, but not the whole song. He didn't write any bass parts and he didn't write any drum parts. He didn't write any lyrics except for the original Jump in the Fire lyrics and Mechanix. If you want everyone to think you know what you're talking about, I suggest you read up a bit more before you start spewing out anymore bullshit you heard someone else say.

View entire thread: Metallica songs with a WAH solo
Posted by stormet on 11/29/04 @ 12:51 AM    Post subject: Re: Metallica songs with a WAH solo

You'd be surprised, there's more than a handful of songs WITHOUT wah solos.
Here is some stuff...this 'wah guide' is STRICTLY for solos on the STUDIO albums (not their live renditions), some songs you may think that have wah effects actually have other effects such as delay, flanger, etc.  I've only done their first 5 albums (I didn't include Load and Reload because I'm not too familiar with a lot of those songs aside from the obvious like Fuel, Outlaw, Memory, etc).  This may not be 100% correct but it's pretty close.

Songs with a wah solo:
Hit the Lights
Motorbreath
Anesthesia - pulling teeth (for bass, the whole song is practically a solo)
Phantom Lord
No Remorse
Fight Fire with fire
Trapped Under Ice
Battery
The Thing that should not be
Damage Inc.
...And Justice for All
Eye of the Beholder
Dyers Eve
Enter Sandman
Holier than Thou
Wherever I may Roam
Don't Tread on Me
My Friend of Misery
The Struggle Within

Songs WITHOUT a wah solo:
The Four Horsemen
Jump in the Fire
Whiplash
Seek and Destroy
Metal Militia
Ride the Lightning
Fade to Black
Escape (has delay in some parts, but no wah)
Creeping Death
The Call of Ktulu (has delay in some parts, but no wah)
Master of Puppets
Welcome Home - Sanitarium
Disposable Heroes (has wah in other parts of the song but not in the solo)
Leper Messiah
Orion
Blackened
One
The Shortest Straw
Harvester of Sorrow
The Frayed Ends of Sanity
To Live is to Die
Sad but True
The Unforgiven
Through the Never
Nothing Else Matters
Of Wolf and Man
The God that failed

IF you count the improv. at the end of "For Whom the Bell tolls" then yes, it has wah in it.

REMEMBER, the non-wah solos probably have a different effect to them...so if you think there's wah in it, there actually isn't.

I agree with this list except I am pretty sure that there is a wah used in Leper Messiah after the sweeping. I dont listen to load/reload enough to tell you exact songs, but Kirk did go a little wah crazy in the 90's. But live, you can expect him to touch the wah at least once a song.
