well...
for those of you who don't really dig powerchords:

the first 4 powerchords of Master of Puppets get 20000 people scream like a motherfuck (oh yeah those are legendary powerchords) as well as the ones in Smoke on the Water

Powerchords make great riffs if they are used well

Only metallica riffs... sorry should hve said. my badAnd here I was about to suggest Smoke on the Water and Crazy Train.

Best Metallica riff has to be Master of Puppets. It's just a no-brainer. Sanitarium is my #2. One is #3.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention they did a Smoke on the Water Jam, which was aweosme.

As well, they had Rob play drums and Lars play bass for like a minute. IT ROCKED!

Wow, that was extremely difficult. I actually didn't end up voting Metallica as much as I thought I would, but I chose Hammett as the one I would want a lesson from. Hotel California was my favorite classic solo - although I actually wish it was longer. I also picked One as the best recent solo, Layla as best classic riff, and Sweet Child O mine as best recent riff. I almost pulled my hair out choosing between Layla and Smoke on the Water.

Posted by on 04/22/06 @ 11:40 AM    Post subject: Deep Purple- Made in Japan (2 Disc Set)

Judging by the thick chugging that Deep Purple pull off as they enter "Highway Star" on this classic 1972 set, this band was of an era that appreciated size in sound. Ritchie Blackmore's guitar and Jon Lord's keyboards owned the evenings on the quintet's Japanese tour, giving the band a front-end density that kept drummer Ian Paice's snap heavy and loud. On tour in support of Machine Head, Deep Purple indulged in some great long-form jams, reaching into the 10-minute range for most of the main set and closing with the now-famed live read of "Space Truckin'." The prizes here fill the second, far shorter, CD, which consists of the encores Deep Purple played throughout the Japan tour. "Speed King" is another statement on the unflappable (and surprisingly unironic) focus that Blackmore and company had on either cars or their very rapid motion. There's a reason this is regarded by many as one of hard rock's cornerstone live recordings. It's a boiler.

Disc: 1
1. Highway Star
2. Child In Time
3. Smoke On The Water
4. The Mule (Drum Solo)
5. Strange Kind Of Woman

Ok i found the metallica cover of smoke on the water. So much better than the original. If anyone is interested i also have it by black sabbath, iron maiden, nirvana, led zeppelin, acca dacca and jimi hendrix. I dont have it by deep purple though... hmmm.

anyways here is metallica - smoke on the water
www.geocities.com/above_darkness/Metallica-Smokeonthewater.mp3

two things
1. the bitrate is 48kb/s so as to minimize file size
2. don't just click the link, right click and press 'save target as'

That sounds awesome...but I dunno, kinda sounds out of James' singing style. Almost like it's another band...it sounds like Kirk's playing and all.  :-/ What year was it recorded?

I can play the intros to NEM and One on my guitar! And Smoke on the water, but that's a given, yo!  ;D I suck.

Heh, I guess that makes two of us  ;)
I've also been trying out some of the slower intros and ballad-like riffs, and so far...well it isn't much, but hey, progress is progress.

But apart from that, I just wanted to hear if anybody could which of Metallica's songs would be the easier ones to learn - I've also heard from other people that Sandman and Bells should be relatively easily learned, so I guess that I'll be looking into those.

Posted by StanboG on 11/24/04 @ 03:12 AM    Post subject: Re: Rammstein

as i said, i understand that you don't like their music and that's fine. everybody's got his own taste.
but these 2 things have to be said more precisely:
indeed their music is not complex but more simple. however this doesn't mean it's bad! IMO creating something simple that sounds good is much better than trying to impress somebody with complex things that give no sense (think of "Smoke on the Water" if you like).
the other thing is: the process of writing songs in Rammstein beginns with the musicians (mostly the 2 guitar players), not with Lindemann. they have an idea for a song and record the whole music. AFTER they have like 10-15 songs recorded (without any vocals) they pass the music to Lindemann. as prevoiusly posted, Lindemann is somekind of a poet, who writes stuff all the time. so he checks if there are some lyrics he already has written that fit good into that music. another part of the lyrics he writes after he has listened to the music - basically influenced by the song music. so one might argue if Lindemann is the only creative brain in the band and on the other hand the statement "the others are his puppets only" is simply false.
the posted information is from a lot of articles/interviews i have read.
