i really want:

aint my biwtch
wasting my hate
cure
outlaw torn
bleeding me
where the wild things are

any1 know what bleeding me sounded like without the ping ride? i hate what lars is using in place of his ride now, it sounds... bad.

and no they havnt played fixxxer as far as i know
Yeah, it's called a china cybal. It's got this dirty sound. I don't like it either. He uses it quite a bit on the ST. Anger album.
I want to hear fixxer, which has never been played live; Bad seed, Carpe Diem, Baby, Where the wild things are, the outlaw torn, the thorn within, poor twisted me, and the Unforgiven II. The Unforgiven is so tired and overdone, and I can't understand how one says the Unforgiven II is inferior to the Unforgiven. The Unforgiven II is so much more powerful lyrically.

St Anger was written for me i'm sure, i relate better to that song than most of their others, but today the unnamed feeling, when i drive motorbreathe, when i'm sad the outlaw torn or fade to black.

The i drink the memory remains try singing the lala bit when you've had sumthing to drink, it's fun.

Let's make it alternative and leave out the classic "crowd pleasers"

Orion (starting off with an instrumental? Why not?)
Ride the Lightning
...And Justice for All
St. Anger medley (Frantic, Sweet Amber, Shoot Me Again, My World, All Within My Hands, Some Kind of Monster)
The Unforgiven (to replace Fade or Sanitarium)
The Outlaw Torn
The Call of Ktulu
My Freind of Misery
*Ununsually long guitarsolo/jam
The Unnamed Feeling
Trapped Under Ice
----------------
The Unforgiven II (also to replace Fade or Sanitarium)
Disposeable Heroes (to replace MoP)
Low Man's Lyric (to replace NEM)
Bleeding Me (to replace One)
Fixxxer (to replace Sandman)
----------------
To Live is to Die

There are only 16 songs here, but the majority of them are very long.

So what?

Metallica themselves played a show with 19 songs in 2004. so they can play a show with 21 songs^^

they play the short shows only because of lars, because lars cant play any longer... when lars is a bit practising, like mountainbiking or jogging or something, and when he stops smoking, he will be okay in about 3 or 4 months.

God, it doesnt even matter get over it, im just saying that it should realisticly a song or two shorter! Anywho back on subject.

1.Fight Fire With Fire
2.Master Of Puppets
3.Creeping Death
4.Sanitarium

6.Unamed Feeling

God, thsi is a hard thing to choose from but here I go.

5. Nothing Else Matters - A great song, brilliant delivery, so great with the orchestra, I love it for the same reasons you do probably

4. To Live is to Die - Similar reasons as most of you. So much meaning in this song, despite it being an instrumental aside from the 5 lines.

3. Outlaw Torn. I know what it's like to lose someone and not be able to find someone who can fill that void, so yeah...

2. The Unforgiven II. Is very good song, makes you think, very good to lsiten to when you feel bad abotu stuff you've done.

1. Fade to Black. This song has probably been the most helpful to me, almost detering me from attempting suicide again. Really do love this song

haha, hell yes!  I agree though, It would suck to see them HAVE to do that.  But unfortunetly all good things must come to the end.  But I would live it up as much as I could during that day(s).  I live in colorado and I'd even fly my ass out the SF to see it.  I love Metallica!  Best band in the world easily.  The one song I'd NEED to see live though, is outlaw torn and until it sleeps.  I've seen them twice, summer sanitarium 2003 and the madly in anger with the world tour with godsmack and believe me both shows rocked the shit outa my life, but those two are still things I want to hear before I die.  ^_^"Be very metal"

Okay, I'll get a bit more specific.

The tracks that are on Reload are, worst of all, boring. They're mind-numbing, overly bloated and long, and contain little to no passion or fire like their previous albums. The boring songs coupled with some truly asinine lyrics and just plain uninspired riffs and melodies make for some truly bad songs. The solos are especially bad - there isn't a single memorable one to be had. See: Atittude, Prince Charming, Better Than You. The "epic" on the album, Fixxxer, doesn't hold a candle to Outlaw Torn and is largely boring as well. The songs just seem to run into each other because of the lack of variety, and when I listened to it, I basically spent 70+ minutes listening to it and could barely remember anything of what I had just heard.

It isn't without some merit, though: Unforgiven II is a decent song that holds up to the original, Fuel is a fun song (that gets tired after a few listens), and parts of Memory Remains, Carpe Diem Baby, and Where The Wild Things Are are good. Other than that, I barely remember a single riff from the album.

It just doesn't compare to any other Metallica album.

Posted by TBAM on 11/16/04 @ 07:48 PM    Post subject: Re: When did you discover METALLICA?

I discovered Metallica through *cringe* the radio and tv.
I was hardly into heavy music, and I heard Until it Sleeps.
I loved it and bought the Load album.
I ended up loving pretty much all of the songs off load, more particularly Bleeding Me and The Outlaw Torn.
These songs even started my love of long progressive songs as well as my introduction to heavy music.
After this I borrowed MOP off a friend, then And Justice For all and then went out and bought all the cds (Load was the latest at that time).
I purchased Reload when it came out, however didn't really like it as much, then by accident I left my tallica cds ontop of my car and drove off, all 7 of them. Never to be seen again....
I have never got all the cds back, and due to various break ins, i now don't have any metallica cds. :(
After Reload, i haven't really liked any of their releases except S & M.
Metallica have been one of my biggest influences musically and on so many more levels (at that time), regardless of whether I like their current music or not. I must say a big thanks to the fellas.
CHEERS

guys, kirk hammett is EXPENDABLE. any poll that rates him in the top 50 guitarists of all time is NOT credible. but don't take 'my' word for it, ask the ppl that actually play guitar. you go to dreamtheater.net, and say 'hammett is god', and they will laugh their asses off. there are members on that board that are better than kirk lol.

but i know where your angst is coming from...you guys obviously need to look up the word 'objectivety'...too many kirk dick riders like i said before. hell, i love kirk to death, and i wouldn't wanna see anyone replace him, but come on guys...he ain't THAT good.

ffs, he tremelo picks the second ONE solo goddamnit lol!

I actually sort of agree with you on this post. I've been playing guitar for five years now, and Kirk does not seem like a god anymore, but I still like him and his Outlaw Torn solo is still my favourite solo of all time. I know a lot of theory, about scales and such, and I know the pentatonic scale is fucking boring. Petrucci (my fav. guitarist) goes through a hell of a lot of scales and makes great solos, but that's just not Hammett's style. He'd rather play intence and powerful melodies, and the notes happen to be in a pentatonic scale...
(not saying Petrucci doesn't sound powerul, couse he does)

Sawed off-> "hell, i love kirk to death, and i wouldn't wanna see anyone replace him, but come on guys...he ain't THAT good."
agreed!  :)

View entire thread: My S&M Review
Posted by cloudnine on 11/01/04 @ 02:05 AM    Post subject: My S&M Review

I just bought and viewed S&M on DVD (after hearing the cd briefly once) for the first time, and I was impressed. I had my doubts about the symphony blending with the band, but I was proven wrong (on most counts). So here goes, a track-by-track review!

(SFO = San Francisco Orchestra, by the way.)

Disc 1

1. Ecstasy of Gold

While it's just an intro, this was lovely in its setup, a nice smooth rendition for a song that was made to be symphonized!

9.5/10

2. Call of Ktulu

Wow. This song was again, MADE to be reworked by a symphony. Everything from the intro to the beautiful interludes are effortlessly intertwined. I always thought this was the weakest of the three Metallica instrumentals, but the addition of the symphony really helped it.

10/10

3. Master of Puppets

Eh. It was okay...I don't really think this song was made to be accompanied with a symphony. The opening verses and choruses were awkward, but when the interlude came along it went much better. Generally good, but the symphony really didn't make it better (what could, really). James was flawless, though.

7/10

4. Of Wolf and Man

Starting off with an uber-corny, yet somehow very fitting and funny joke by James, this one ripped into me. Good God - I never really liked this song, but I sure as hell do now. This is probably the most improved song with the addition of the orchestra, truly adding another dimension to a song I thought was pretty boring. Wow is all I have to say. Jason is especially awesome on this one.

9.5/10

5. The Thing That Should Not Be

I always thought the relatively poor production on Master of Puppets kept this one from becoming great, and it seems I was right. The SFO coupled with the flawless production truly makes this a heavy wonder to behold, with the lyrics sung beautifully - and insanely - by James. It's his favourite song, and I can see the love he shows for it.

9.5/10

6. Fuel

Argh. This song just DOES NOT fit with an orchestra. All the SFO does is provide background noise, and I just wanted it to be over. Heh.

5/10

7. The Memory Remains

Wow, is this version ever better than the record. The symphony adds an awesome background, while letting the fans sing the stuff usually done by that crazy witch Marianne Faithful was awesome. The power behind it was incredible, and this one just kicked ass.

9/10

8. No Leaf Clover

The first of the made-for-this-performance songs, this one is a heavy wonder, with some awesome (if repetitive) lyrics. Incredible vocal power by James coupled with an awesome solo for Kirk makes it one of the best songs they've created since Load. The made-for-orchestra feel makes the song that much better.

9.5/10

9. Hero of the Day

I always thought this song was kind of ho-hum after the soft part, but the orchestra with its soft, advancing melody helped this one out. I can't keep complimenting James on his vocals, though. Darn.

8.5/10

10. Devil's Dance

Sigh. I fucking hate this song. I couldn't even bring myself to finish the whole thing.

I have no idea because it sucks / 10

11. Bleeding Me

This gets one of my votes for best song of the compilation. James' incredible lyrics and vocals coupled with the GORGEOUS accompaniment of the orchestra makes for an incredible number. I can't compliment this one enough.

10/10

Disc 2

1. Nothing Else Matters

We all know this song was meant to be done by an orchestra one day, and it sure was. The SFO adds another layer of beauty to the song, and James' solo is nothing short of stunning - one of the best versions of it I've ever heard.

9.5/10

2. Until it Sleeps

This was a decent song, and the orchestra spiced it up. Especially in the intro - it complements' Jason's bass very well. It's generally well-done, but not much to write home about.

8/10

3. For Whom The Bell Tolls

I wanted this to kick ass, and it did! The orchestra just adds more power to the piece - basic, but awesome. The orchestra echoes are cool, too.

9.5/10

4. Minus Human

I can't decide which original piece is better - this or No Leaf Clover. At first I thought NLC, but I must say that this riff fucking kicks ass, and Jason's vocals are amazing on it. So I'll give it the same score and be diplomatic.

9.5/10

5. Wherever I May Roam

Nice piece, the orchestra adds a bit, but it's nothing particularly special. Just an all-around good job - especially James' powerful voice.

8.5/10

6. Outlaw Torn

This one's tied for Bleeding Me as the best cut of the discs. It's already an awesome song, but this version truly breathes new life into it. Everything is amazing here, from the intro to the interlude and then to the awesome trippy solos. James does an INCREDIBLE job here, and I can't stress this enough. Truly one of his best moments.

10/10

7. Sad But True

I wanted to like it, but this kind of annoyed me. Instead of crashing along with the chorus, the orchestra made it distracting, trying to create a background - it didn't work. The song is supposed to be a crunchy, stop and start job, and the orchestral part didn't fit.

6/10

8. One

This was going to be the big one for me. If they blew this, I was going to be very disappointed. I was pleasantly surprised. The orchestral opening was kickass, and the flowing melody behind the most beautiful intro Metallica has ever written was gorgeous. During the verses, the orchestra is so light and delicate - it's PERFECT. It turns angry during the "wish for death part", which is also awesome. I do have one huge gripe here, though. They really fucking blew the crashing middle part. These is probably the single most most POWERFUL section Metallica has ever written, with the guitars creating the machinegun effect that is one of the top sections of any song, ever. The orchestra playing over top of it totally ruined any power it had, and it played something really anti to what emotion the chords were supposed to convey. However, they pick it up again with a frantic type of section under Kirk's solos, which were awesome. The blowing of the middle section really kind of ruined what could've been one of the definitive versions of the song out there, though.

8.5/10

9. Enter Sandman

This one didn't work. It just felt WAY too mushy and overcrowded, with everyone seemingly playing something different that didn't fit at all. This song to me has always been about building up, and even the stop-start BAM part at the end lost its effect from everything just having no sense of direction or feeling. Probably the least successful song on the album in comparison to the original.

5/10

10. Battery

Niiiiiiiiice. I never really appreciated the song itself until recently, and this offered a cool rendition of the song. One complaint I had was the REALLY long waiting of absolutely nothing while they built up tension for the last encore. Yes, I want the concert in it's entirety, but 5 minutes of just people cheering and shots of the orchestra was lame. Anyways, this was a nice finisher to the performance, with a great, thoughtful rendition of the lyrics by James, who usually rushes it and garbles it. Very heavy, very good. Was there supposed to be an S&M 2 which was delayed by rehab or something? 'Cos Lars says "same time next year". Just a thought.

9/10

In short, I miss Jason Newsted. Okay we're digressing, but this, his last recorded performance with the band, really opens the wound of the total lack of decent backup vocals in the current lineup. His incredible powerful, underrated background singing really added another dimension to the music. Sigh. They should have treated him better, because they're hurting for it now.

In conclusion, this was a nice sidebar to Metallica's discography. Most of it is very well done, and I don't regret the $70 CAD (!) I spent on it - it was much better watching the thing on DVD then just listening to it, and I like the performances very much. My complaints are the lack of some songs that I would think have gone better with the orchestra then some that got on the setlist:     Unforgiven? WHERE THE HELL WAS THIS SONG AND WHY WASN'T IT INCLUDED, My Friend of Misery, Orion, Sanitarium, and FADE TO BLACK (another no-brainer, why the fuck not?). Another thing that was missing were Justice songs - they only played a single track - while they're hard speed/thrash metal, a nice medley of 3-4 songs or something would have worked well.

While my review may have seemed harsh, I really did enjoy the performances, and I'll be watching them again soon. A great addition to my collection. This thing will definitely appeal to prog-rock fans and others who like to see a new spin on the music they know and love. Good job, guys.

Hope you all liked the review.

Okay, make this a sticky.

This is the thread on which you write what your favorite Metallica song, album, video etc is so it will never be asked again!
I recommend for every member to reply once, and if your favorite changes then simply use the "modify" botton to change it.
If everyone gets thier fav's "registered" it will make lots of things a whole lot easier. We will be free of the classic noob questions, and it can be used as a sort of "archive". If you want to know a certain member's fav. song, let's say Metal ass-monkey, you can just click the thread and see it's To Live Is to Die! (right?)

OK? Everyone posts your favorites for the (hopefully) last time!

Sad But True has been getting on my nerves - but the shitty thing is there are so many casual fans who are waiting to hear that song. If I could I'd replace that with something epic like "Outlaw Torn" or "...And Justice For All"

As lars has said, in order for something to be fast and heavy it needs to be next to some that is slow and melodic. I think its great dynamics. It slows down the tempo of the song so when the next part kicks back in it has more of an impact and can make it sound faster/heavier when coming after such a stripped down section. Same thing is done in songs like outlaw torn, breadfan, fade to black, the four horsemen etc. I like it

Yeah, fuck the goddam casual fans, give them a good kick in the ass and play ...And Justice For All or Outlaw Torn. Sad But True is becoming so boring to my ears, and Seek And Destroy is getting on my fucking nerves. I mean, it's a great show pumper, but christ TAKE A BREAK! Has sandman ever NOT been played live after black was released? Christ, that song is overplayed. I say fuck the casual fans.
