Ok I haven't listened to Jump In The Fire but I have looked at the lyrics to it and I have listened to the Devils Dance many times. Now does anyone think that Dance is a sequel/continuation of Jump In The Fire?

You know I think it was the Jump In the Fire EP that also had songs with added fake crowd noise and was sold as a 'live' recording. I happen to have a cd from San Fran '85 and it's that Live & Alive one, well it sounds like some of the crowd noise is faked sometimes too. I couldn't give a shit less though because it's still Metallica playing.

The Four Horsemen is the best song on the album followed by Seek and Destroy. Actually I agree with master of orion. Anesthesia isn't that great. well it's a great bass solo but it's soooo boooooring to listen to. i always skip it. i'm not a big fan of Jump In The Fire and Metal Melitia either. i think Phantom Lord is the most underrated on this album. they should play it live a lot more.

Posted by Metaltrooper on 12/19/04 @ 05:44 AM    Post subject: My KEA ratings

here we go:

Hit the lights: 9 (good speed song, riffs, lyrics amd solos kick ass)

The Four Horsemen: 10 (killer riffs great lyrics, works awesome live)

Motorbreath: 9 (fast! great drumsolo in the beginning, also awesome live song)

Jump in the fire: 8 (a bit boring but still good, great solo)

Anesthesia(Pulling Teath): 8 (cliff shows what he can do, but four minute bass solo; it gets a little boring)

Whiplash: 10 (it's fucking whiplash motherfuckers, live songs top three, very fast and heavy, awesome all the way)

Phantom Lord: 9 (good, fast; great lyrics)

No Remorse: 8 (a bit boring, great solos by mr. hammet)

Seek and Destroy: 10 (also in live songs top three)

Metal Militia: 8 (great and fast song, with catchy lyrics, but there is something missing)

the whole album: 9- (it's all the same, just fast thrash, except seek amd jump, but great album)

Kirk: 10 (great solo work)
Lars: 9 (drumming is good but it could be better)
Cliff: 9 (I don't like pulling teath that much, but his playing is great no question about it)
James: 9- (yeah, his voice is what it is, but riffs on this album are killers he's the best rhytm guitarist in the world)

I kinda rediscovered this album recently, so I'll offer my thoughts track-by-track:

1) Hit the Lights

With what must amount to one of the most awesome intro riffs in history, this song prepares you for what's to come and is kind of an exhibit of Metallica's skill, with blistering solos and riffs that just kick your ass. Awesome, with some fun lyrics.

9/10

2) The Four Horsemen

One can see the birth of what we know today as Metallica in its infancy on this track. With a kickass intro that while simplistic, really gives the song a feel of galloping. There's enough awesome riffs here for an entire album's worth of today's shitty music. The interlude is quite gorgeous and comes as a contrast compared to most of the rest of the album, with an awesome solo over the slow riff. While some people say this song goes on too long, I find that this song is an example of the total loss of attention span people have today. Back in the day, people took their time with songs, allowing the riffs to come full circle by letting them play out. Probably the song of the album, right here.

10/10

3) Motorbreath

With some of Metallica's punk influence showing here, this three-minute ditty is a fun song about the fast-paced life. I can't help but like this song even though it's kinda lame - it's a guilty pleasure.

8.5/10

4) Jump in the Fire

A nice pump-up song, the intro riff kicks ass and I can't help but love the "Come On!" chorus, as juvenile as it may be. A shorter song, but awesome nonetheless. A kickass solo permeates the middle of the song, adding another layer of sweetness to the track, and a nice lead-out solo. Good stuff.

9/10

5) Anaesthesia (Pulling Teeth)

I can't really say I love this bass solo, because I don't play the instrument. However, it's quite remarkable what Cliff did with a couple of effects that make you think you're listening to a guitar solo. Interesting, but it's a skipper for me.

7/10

6) Whiplash

While possibly containing the lamest lyric Metallica has ever written, even though I still love to hear it ("we'll never stop, we'll never quit 'cause we're Metallica!"), this song is a nice headbanger. Awesome solos throughout, and it's just a fun song in general.

8.5/10

7) Phantom Lord

While it's inherently geeky to be writing about some kind of "Phantom Lord", I still like this song. This one definitely brings the obsession with the word "leather" to the forefront. I really like the short interlude, similar to that of the Four Horsemen - gives us a little break from the thrashing, and is quite melodic - I wish it had lasted a bit longer, with another little solo ditty overtop of it. I can't help but like James' screech at the end, either.

8/10

No Remorse

The only track on the album that even approaches serious lyrics, this one has an AWESOME intro riff and delves into the lack of remorse one begins to develop for one's deeds after being sent to war. This would be the precursor to the trend of anti-war songs that continued with Disposable Heroes and One, but is obviously not even close to the standards those songs set. I love the chorus, and it hits home pretty hard considering the rest of the album's demeanor. You can hear the lack of mercy in James' lyrics when he sings "No Remorse, No Regret". Nice one, guys.

9.5/10

9) Seek and Destroy

The song everyone knows from this album and has become a staple in their live shows, Metallica brings us another fun "fight song" with a great chorus to get crowds pumped and chanting. While the lyrics are repetitive and silly, the riffs are downright infectious and get under your skin until you just GOTTA hear this song one more time.

9.5/10

10) Metal Militia

The album's final call-to-arms for metalheads, this one has the ridiculously insane fastpaced intro we all know. I don't love this song, it's a fun headbanging way to end the album, though. I like a couple of the riffs, but I think it's a weak point of the album.

7.5/10

To conclude, I think this album is pretty darn awesome. Yes, the lyrics are juvenile, bordering on ridiculous at times - and dammit, enough about leather! The production is pretty poor, but its to be expected with the situation of the time. I actually like the shoddy production of the album - I prefer these versions to the live ones, and I can't explain it other than it's just so...honest and no-bullshit.

Still, it's a monumental step in defining and shaping metal into the force it was in the 80s and early 90s. Even though it's not their best album, it's still incredibly fun to listen to and is a great headbanger all the way through!

kirks backup vocals during frantic live are hilarious.(you live or you lie it). I dont necessarily think James is struggling all that much, i know he's hit a few bad notes but i heard jump in the fire and metal militia and he sung them both really good. Id suggest that robs vocals would be better than kirks judging by the live shit ive seen from this tour

View entire thread: All songs and albums
Posted by D-Man on 12/19/04 @ 11:10 PM    Post subject: Re: All songs and albums

Let's see...

Kill 'em All: 10 tracks
Ride the Lightning: 8 tracks
Master of Puppets: 8 tracks
...And Justice for All: 9 tracks
Metallica: 12 tracks
Load: 14 tracks
ReLoad: 13 tracks
Garage, Inc: 27 tracks
S&M: 21 tracks w/symphony
St. Anger: 11 tracks

So right there, we have 10 official albums, not including EPs, (Re-Revisited), Reissues (KEA with Am I Evil/Blitzkrieg), singles and live cds (except for S&M since those are different versions of the songs).

And with those 10 official albums, we have 133 songs.

And with those 133 songs, we have songs not released on official albums, including:

We Did it Again
I Disappear
53rd and 3rd
Commando
Today You Love, Tomorrow the World
Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue
Cretin Hop

That brings us to 140 songs.

Now, you can choose to include songs they played in demos, but never released, like

Sucking My Love
Let it Loose
The Mechanix

That's 143. You can choose to include songs played live as well, but that is a lot and I don't want to look those up.

You can also choose songs band members have appeared in, like:

James Hetfield: Don't You Think This Outlaw Bit's Done Gone Out of Hand
Kirk Hammett: Satan (from Spawn Soundtrack with Orbital)

There could be more, but I just don't know.

So, that's 10 official albums and 145 songs.

I'm going to include all albums now...

That would make 11, since we've added Live Shit: Binge and Purge.

I'm going to include all offcial EPs/singles now...

So we've got:

Jump in the Fire
Creeping Death
Garage Days Re-Revisited
Eye of the Beholder
One
Harvester of Sorrow
Enter Sandman
Sad But True
The Unforgiven
Wherever I May Roam
Nothing Else Matters
Until it Sleeps
King Nothing
Hero of the Day
Mama Said
Fuel
The Memory Remains
The Unforgiven II
Turn the Page
Die, Die My Darling
Whiskey in the Jar
No Leaf Clover
Nothing Else Matters (S&M)
Frantic
St. Anger
Some Kind of Monster
The Unnamed Feeling

So that's 27 official EPs/singles. If I forgot any, tell me...

I'm just gonna end it there. There are way more things you can include, but this seems like a good number:

9 albums with new material (including the Garage, Inc covers)
2 live albums, one with 'new' material (S&M versions)
27 official EPs/singles
145+ songs

That is not a correct number, btw. It's just the way I calculated it. It depends how you look at it.

although ive heard all of these songs many times, im listening to them at the time of review so i cant listen to the whole song again to make the best grade, but ill try. good thing i dont want to be a teacher. i !@$%ing hate kids.

1. Hit the Lights - "NO LIFE 'TILL LEATHER, WE'RE GONNA KICK SOME ASS TONIGHT!" good song, pretty heavy, nothing really wrong with it that i can think of, i'll give it an B+.

2. The Four Horsemen - another good song, this one gets a B+ as well.

3. Motorbreath - "THE SIGN OF LIVING FAST!" this is probably the first Kill 'Em All song i've heard, and one of my favorite. it gets alot of low scores on other reviews, but i like it and this is my review so i'm giving it an A-!

4. Jump in the Fire - "SO C'MON, JUMP IN THE FIRE!" like this song as well, not my favorite on the album, but i like all the songs on this album so i'm giving it a plain old B.

5. (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth - a good bass solo, it is not my favorite on the album but i do listen to it from time to time. hard to grade it. i'll give it a B-, i know this is bordering in "average" but i have to grade it according to everything before it.

6. Whiplash - a decent song, not my favorite on the album but i repeat myself by telling you that i like every song on the album. i'm gonna slap a nice little B on this tune.

7. Phantom Lord - it took me a long time and until reading a post in this forum i never really listened to this song. it's a good song and i'm glad i saw that post. i'll give this one a B+ because it is not widely recognized as a good song.

8. No Remorse - a pretty good song, not the best on the album but it would get a very high grade if it wasnt surrounded by so many other good songs. a B seems pretty fair.

9. Seek & Destroy - "SEARCHING, SEEK AND DESTROY!" this is also one of the first Kill 'Em All song i heard and it became one of my favorites. i listen to it now and it is a little bit boring like some other people say, but it is still a very good song. it gets another plain old B.

10. Metal Militia - another one of the better songs on the album, its hard for me to give an A to any song even tho i love metallica so this one gets a B+.

Crap almost forgot, overall album grade is a... B+

i guess it didnt turn out as lazy as i thought, i just expected to write the score i gave it, but that didn't work out did it?

I didn't record these, metallica didn't record these- some legend in the crowd recorded these, but as awsome as he or she is, they are no sound engineer. These aren't the best quality, but given the circumstances, I think its just good to have these for sentimental reasons. :)

i like metallica. aslong as its pre blackalbum. everything else by them sucks. mustaine wrote everyversion of the 4 horsmen/mechanix. the only thing james and lars wrote was a revised exit solo. the mechanix lyrics are not bad. they rock. its true to someones life. he entirely wrote everysong on the first 2 albums that has his name on it. anytime you hear the "spider riff" its a mustaine song.
First off explain to me what a Spider Riff is, if you even know. Have you listened to the Mechanix on Kill is My Business and Business is good or did someone just tell you it was on there? The Four Horsemen has an added bridge and the lyrics were completely rewritten by James. Lars wrote the drum part and Ron wrote the bass part. Dave wrote the guitar part, but not the whole song. He didn't write any bass parts and he didn't write any drum parts. He didn't write any lyrics except for the original Jump in the Fire lyrics and Mechanix. If you want everyone to think you know what you're talking about, I suggest you read up a bit more before you start spewing out anymore bullshit you heard someone else say.

View entire thread: Metallica songs with a WAH solo
Posted by stormet on 11/29/04 @ 12:51 AM    Post subject: Re: Metallica songs with a WAH solo

You'd be surprised, there's more than a handful of songs WITHOUT wah solos.
Here is some stuff...this 'wah guide' is STRICTLY for solos on the STUDIO albums (not their live renditions), some songs you may think that have wah effects actually have other effects such as delay, flanger, etc.  I've only done their first 5 albums (I didn't include Load and Reload because I'm not too familiar with a lot of those songs aside from the obvious like Fuel, Outlaw, Memory, etc).  This may not be 100% correct but it's pretty close.

Songs with a wah solo:
Hit the Lights
Motorbreath
Anesthesia - pulling teeth (for bass, the whole song is practically a solo)
Phantom Lord
No Remorse
Fight Fire with fire
Trapped Under Ice
Battery
The Thing that should not be
Damage Inc.
...And Justice for All
Eye of the Beholder
Dyers Eve
Enter Sandman
Holier than Thou
Wherever I may Roam
Don't Tread on Me
My Friend of Misery
The Struggle Within

Songs WITHOUT a wah solo:
The Four Horsemen
Jump in the Fire
Whiplash
Seek and Destroy
Metal Militia
Ride the Lightning
Fade to Black
Escape (has delay in some parts, but no wah)
Creeping Death
The Call of Ktulu (has delay in some parts, but no wah)
Master of Puppets
Welcome Home - Sanitarium
Disposable Heroes (has wah in other parts of the song but not in the solo)
Leper Messiah
Orion
Blackened
One
The Shortest Straw
Harvester of Sorrow
The Frayed Ends of Sanity
To Live is to Die
Sad but True
The Unforgiven
Through the Never
Nothing Else Matters
Of Wolf and Man
The God that failed

IF you count the improv. at the end of "For Whom the Bell tolls" then yes, it has wah in it.

REMEMBER, the non-wah solos probably have a different effect to them...so if you think there's wah in it, there actually isn't.

I agree with this list except I am pretty sure that there is a wah used in Leper Messiah after the sweeping. I dont listen to load/reload enough to tell you exact songs, but Kirk did go a little wah crazy in the 90's. But live, you can expect him to touch the wah at least once a song.

Posted by dansj882 on 10/29/04 @ 06:24 PM    Post subject: A punk tribute to metallica

ive just previewed this album on the internet:

1.Hit the lights - Sloppy seconds

This has an OK feel to it, i dont like the effect the guitar is using though. Also, the vocalist doesnt sustain his voice, which sucks. Original is 20 thousand times better. The solos suck.
Overall rating: 2 / 10

2.Seek and Destroy - Agent Orange

Opening riff is sped up with a cool backing track, then its just downhill from there. Although a nice speedy-solo riff, everything else about this sucks. Vocalist sucks, doesnt sing...
Overall rating 2 / 10

3. Motorbreath - D.O.A

At least they played the opening drum riff correctly, followed by a hetfield-influenced scream. But what the hell? the vocalist sounds like hes gurgling instead of singing! what is he singing underwater? A definate put off
Overall Rating 1 / 10

4. Sad But True - Flipper

The opening riff sounds out of tune, the bass is several octaves too high, or is that a guitar :-/ i can't really tell. Vocals are terrible.
Overall Rating 0 / 10

5. Jump in the Fire - Dee Dee Ramone

WTF!?! There is no relavence between this song and the original, the only thing the same is the lyrics, but not even these are correct. Since when to metallica ever sing "Jumped in the fire" ??? huh? anyway, this sounds alright.
Overall Rating: as a metallica cover -10000 / 10
               as an overal song 5 / 10

...more to follow, although i dont think the songs will get any better

Come on everybody! I know that James is probably the favorite member for most of you, but Kirk is defenitly better. James might be a little bit faster and makes it look easier, but Kirk is a lot more accurate and creates a beautiful sound in his solos.

I agree!! But James is not faster than Kirk. Why do you think that? Because he plays Master of Puppets with only down strokes? Lets hear James play the Jump In The Fire solo, or Blackened or Creeping Death or ... you get the idea...

Olympic Stadion, Helsinki, Finland
May 28, 2004

This is my story, it's long but I hope you guys like it.

Me and my two friends started the trip to Helsinki almost day before the show. Before we went to railway station, we watched Cunning Stunts, and chatted how this is going to be awesome.

About 1 a.m we climbed to train, which would take us to Helsinki. We chatted some shit, and then we tried to sleep. Train arrived place called Pieksämäki. We needed to wait more than an hour before we managed to continue our journey. Some other metal dudes came to train. We watched how one of them managed to travel whole trip without buying the ticket (he almost get caught). Actually we didn't manage to travel the whole trip by train, because there happened something. Railroad was messed because of some train accident, which had happened couple hours earlier than we arrived the scene. We though that this was the end, FUCK! We took the early train just to get ourselves to Helsinki at morning, so we could get ourselves to front row.

Anyway, we managed to get ourselves in the bus. The bus went some different route, but we managed to get ourselves in Helsinki when clock was around 9 a.m. We bought some food, cola and candies, and headed to the Stadium. There was big line, and we thought that we never manage to get ourselves in the front row.

Well, hours passed. We bought ourselves T-shirts, and managed to pass many dudes on the line. (That was quite strange, I still wonder who that happened.) Anyways, clock was 5.30 p.m or something when they opened the gates. We ran like hell, and managed to get front row places. At that moment, we felt like we're winners.

Lostprophets was the first performer. They played half hour set, which was horrible. Sound was horrible, band was horrible, songs were horrible. They sucked big time.

After that Slipknot came. Their songs are what they are, but those dudes know how to make good show. Slipknot sure got crowd going. Guy who stood beside me in audience, manage to get Joey's drum stick. He was one happy mother fucker whole night, just because of that. After Slipknot left the stage, people started to wait.

The show supposed to start 8 p.m. but they were late about 20 minutes. Some people started to get pissed waiting and shouted some shit towards Metallica's front stage camera man. Well, poor guy didn't understand a word, maybe it was just a better thing. Then suddenly, Ecstasy of Gold started.

That was like religious feeling. It felt so good to hear the intro... it can't be described with words. People who had been Metallica gig, know what I'm talking about.

Blackened intro came. People went crazy. I was like, this can't be true. I'm gonna see Metallica. In that same moment James walked to stage and song begun. Headbanging was non-stoppable. Then he asked us to give him M-E-T-A-L. Fuel, fire, desire. It was good to hear that song live. The song, which got me to listen Metallica. Tempo was fast, and after that they played Harvester. During Harvester I went nuts. I jumped and banged and did everything! Rob smiled towards me and some other guys, when he saw that we sure liked the song. After that, Kirk did the doodle.

Then they played Sanitarium, I liked. Another fucking awesome song tonight. But I was waiting Bellz and One. After that they played Frantic, it was fucking killer in live. It sounded awesome, and I banged my head so hard that it could easily drop. But then, the best moment of the gig.

James introduced Rob, and he started to Jam with Lars. I wasn't heard any of 2004 shows before this gig, so I didn't know it was intro to Bellz. And then they started it. The moment when the song begun was no doubt best in whole gig. The song which I wanted so badly to hear, they played it. Ahh, great memory. Kirk did some solo after the song.

Because I wasn't heard 2004 shows before gig, I didn't know what kind of intro I Disappear had in this tour. When they begun the song, I wonder what's this. But when I realized it was Disappear, I loved the intro. Song kicked ass too, and was total suprise for me. Then they played St. Anger, Sad But True, Creeping Death (which kicked so much ass) and Battery.

After that came Roam. It was suprise song too, I didn't know they play it. I can't remember much of it, because it's not my favourites. Kirk did some doodle after that, later I discovered it's called "Melbourne". Nothing Else Matters was true sing along. Every motherfucker sang the song, everyone knew the words. It was great, and after that came Puppetz. Excellent one too, talking about One which followed Puppetz and the pyros which were included.

One was the other song which I wanted to hear. It was great. Actually more than great, it was awesome as hell. Last part of the song I was banging really hard, and I had little pain in my neck. But it sure was worth it. After that they performed Sandman, Jump in the Fire and Seek & Destroy.

During Seek I was so exhausted that I just hoped the show would end soon. Can you think about that? Nobody wants Metallica show to end. Anyway, Seek was the last song. After that they throw bunch of pics in the crowd. My friends got 4 or 5 total(I can't remember), I didn't get single one. But I wasn't disappointed, the show was so awesome.

Then we left the Stadium. We managed to get ourselves in the bus, and at next morning (about 8 a.m) I was home. I had seen Metallica, and heard bunch of worlds best songs. I was fucking happy.

The End.
