anyway, back to the original question. i think solos are different for the different instruments. a guitar solo is classified different, it has to go on for atleast 10 seconds like someone already said, and change it up a bit, not just repeat itself like the fwtbt solo. a bass solo is different, listen to the part in holier than thou where the guitars die out and the drums and bass keep going. same thing as bass for drums.

I really like almost every song from the black album. I'd rate this album a 9.6 out of 10. You got the Unforgiven, NEM, Sandman, Wherever i may roam, Of wolf & man, and more great songs (which I really like) such as My friend of misery or Through the never. Some of the heavy songs like Dont tread on me, Holier than thou or The struggle within, i think, are really amazing; i just don't understand why some people don't like these songs.

Oh ya, great review master of orion

Two faced people fuck me off, too. But I found out that those kind of people usually lie so much they believe themselves (reminds me of the song holier than thou) and they just have a big problem with themselves in the first place. So try to not give a fuck  ;)

Posted by D-Man on 10/28/04 @ 12:21 AM    Post subject: Metallica at Copps in Hamilton

WAS AWESOME!

Second time seeing the band in 3 weeks, and I enjoyed this show even more than in Toronto...

Here's the setlist:

Battery
Fuel
The Memory Remains
The Thing That Should Not Be
Frantic
The Unforgiven
Holier Than Thou
Whiskey In The Jar
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
Master Of Puppets
Fight Fire With Fire
--------
For Whom The Bell Tolls
Nothing Else Matters
Sad But True
One
Enter Sandman
--------
Dyers Eve
Seek And Destroy

Now, can you ask for a better setlist??? It was amazing!

Now, to the show.

I went by myself this time, and I brought two signs with me...

One was a Canadian flag, but it had the Ninja Star logo on it instead of the maple leaf. I'll take a pic of it soon. This one scored for me big time, and I'll tell you how in a bit.

The second one was my gem. It said "HAMILTON LOVES THAT SILLY LITTLE WEBSITE!" I'll explain why it was a gem in a second.

So, the show starts off with... No, not Blackened, but Battery! Great surprise there, and it just got better. After a sweet version of Fuel, the guys whipped out The Memory Remains, which was big on the sing along parts.

Now, this is where the awesomeness starts. It was around this time that Hetfield goes to the mic, and says, "Boy, I see a lot of Canadian flags around here." I heard this and screamed his name as loud as I could and held the flag I made up, and he looks at me and says, "Hey, that's a cool one!" That made my day there, but it just got more awesome after that.

They then played The Thing That Should Not Be (:O) and went into Frantic. At this time, I brought out my "HAMILTON LOVES THAT SILLY LITTLE WEBSITE!" sign, and guy (Pretty sure it was Niclas from MetOnTour.com) comes up to me and says he'll take my pic for the site. That was awesome, and he took my pic, and thanked me for the support. Thank me? Niclas, thank you, you f'in rock. It should be up very soon, and when it is, I'll post it here. This wouldn't be the last I would see of Niclas though. Kirk played a mean solo after Frantic, and it was very cool. He read my "Silly Website" sign as well, which rocked.

They then played some more songs, including Holier Than Thou, Whiskey in the Jar, Welcome Home (Sanitarium) and Fight Fire with Fire, all of which I've never heard live before, so that was sweet that they played those songs. Rob did his Junglessence solo as well, which sounded even better than it did in Toronto. (Did he add on to it or something?)

During this, Hetfield came around and I got to slap hands with him, which was awesome.

For the first encore, we got For Whom the Bell Tolls and Sad But True, along with NEM, One and Enter Sandman. The pyro for One was insane, much like it was in Toronto. During One, I got out my "Silly little website" sign and showed it to Lars and gave him the devil horns, and he looked right back and me, with his own set of devil horns. He was hunched over behind the bass drum when he did that, so that was funny. As well, Hetfield came back to over to my area, and we slapped fists this time. That was even more awesome. First a high five, then the fist. He had a mean looking ring on too, pretty sweet.

For the second encore, we got Dyers Eve. This helped finish the show on a high note, just like how Disposable Heroes made the Toronto show worth seeing. After this, we got everyone's fave, Seek & Destroy, which the crowd went nuts on.

When the show ended, I got blown away. While the guys were throwing picks to the crowd, James came over to me and gave me his wristband. His sweaty, awesome wristband. I couldn't even speak. I had just gotten a freakin' wristband from Hetfield! Aghhh!!! To top that off, Niclas came back over to me and gave me like 10 picks! I thought he was gonna give me like two, but he gave me 10! Ahahahah.....awesome.

So, after that, I left the building, and delibritely started looking through all my picks while walking through the crowd just to show them off. People were offering me like 10 bucks a pick, but there's no way I'd sell any of them.

Well, that's about it. I'm at home typing this, with ringing  ears and a satisfied Metallica smile, which James said he wanted us all to have. Well James, you did you job. Thanks.

And that's it. Metallica in Hamilton = best time of my life. And Lars, you're right. You should come back here more than every 7 years. Haha...

PS: Niclas, if that was even you, (I don't know, I've never seen you before :D) thank you so much for taking my picture, and the 10 picks. YOU ROCK!

Not even close. It's Holier Than Thou, clocking in at 3:47. That seems very short, but the song is fast and heavy enough to make up for the shortness of it.

Actually, I would think it would be Motorbreath clocking in at 3:08.

View entire thread: Mini's Lazy Assed Metallica Album Reviews
Posted by MiniME06 on 10/01/04 @ 10:20 PM    Post subject: Metallica/The Black Album Lazy Assed Review

One of Metallica's most famous albums, although not my favorite, this is still a great album. Lets begin.

1. Enter Sandman - an exremely well known Metallica song, whoever has heard of Metallica has probably heard this song at least once. this is a great song and like the rest of the album, is recorded in the highest quality possible. i happen to be sick of the song from listening to it so much but that doesn't mean i don't appreciate it. this great track gets an A.

2. Sad But True - arguably the heaviest song on the album and one of the best. good drums and well good everything, not much to say about this song besides that its GREAT. can't give it any lower than a B+.

3. Holier Than Thou - another great song, i like it just about as much as Sad But True so i guess ill give it a B+.

4. The Unforgiven - a decent song, i happen to like The Unforgiven II on Reload a little better than this one, but it is still a great song. it's probably the second least heavy song on the album besides NEM, another great song, but we will get to that track a little later. This "slightly less better than The Unforgiven II" track gets a B-.

5. Wherever I May Roam - another great addition to the album, slow start but it gets pretty heavy at times and is quite worthy of it's Metallica-ness. I happen to like this song alot, but i'll say that about nearly every song. i think i heard somewhere like on some show on MTV or VHI about The Black Album that this song has alot of meaning to Metallica (being on tour all the time.) This Metallica song gets a B+.

6. Don't Tread On Me - "TO PREPARE FOR WAR!" another heavy song, like most of the album and just as good as any track on the CD. i kinda think its kinda repetitive for a song thats four minutes long but that doesn't make it bad. This rare "short" song gets a B.

7. Through the Never - "TWISTING,TURNING THROUGH THE NEVA!" about the same length as Tread and just as good. good vocals, overall a very good song, not much else to say about it. another... RARE ...Metallica song that isn't 6+ minutes long.
This one gets a B like pretty much everything else.

8. Nothing Else Matters - definitely the most well known Metallica ballads out there. this song created alot of controversy with the hardcore Metallica fans of the 80's because it wasn't heavy enough. Good vocals, good song, nothing else matters. i'll give this lil ballad a B+ for surviving the angry and rabid hardcore Metallica fans.

9. Of Wolf and Man - although not my favorite song on the album, it's not a bad song. i can't think of much to say about it so im just gonna slap a B- on this track and call it a day.

10. The God That Failed - i feel pretty much the same way about this song as i do about Wolfman. it's a decent song with good vocals so i'm just gonna slap the same grade of a B- on it and go on to...

11. My Friend of Misery - another decent song, tho not my favorite. not as heavy as most of the songs on the album and i dont like the vocals as much. it's a good song and im still going to give it a B-.

12. The Struggle Within - a good finisher for the album. nice marching drum intro and decent vocals. not much wrong with this song, worth a listen while you struggle inside your head. BIG FAT F- B-

now for the final grade. this is an overall good album and deserves an overall good grade for it. i perfer the first four albums, but this is a good addition to my collection. it's definitely worth buying it.

F- ... B

Do you have the Enter Sandman vinyl single WIP version? What are the differences? I don't have a record player . . . .
the only version of the enter sandman demo that i have is the one from daryl's compilation

No, I meant, the Holier Than Thou from the Enter Sandman vinyl single. On some copies of the single there is a version of Holier Than Thou WIP, and since the one you have sounds like a WIP (as opposed to a demo), I was wondering if it's the same one. And if it isn't, then what are the differences between your version and the one that only appeared on the single? I can't listen to it, I don't own a record player and they only released it on vinyl.

View entire thread: Metallica songs with a WAH solo
Posted by stormet on 11/29/04 @ 12:51 AM    Post subject: Re: Metallica songs with a WAH solo

You'd be surprised, there's more than a handful of songs WITHOUT wah solos.
Here is some stuff...this 'wah guide' is STRICTLY for solos on the STUDIO albums (not their live renditions), some songs you may think that have wah effects actually have other effects such as delay, flanger, etc.  I've only done their first 5 albums (I didn't include Load and Reload because I'm not too familiar with a lot of those songs aside from the obvious like Fuel, Outlaw, Memory, etc).  This may not be 100% correct but it's pretty close.

Songs with a wah solo:
Hit the Lights
Motorbreath
Anesthesia - pulling teeth (for bass, the whole song is practically a solo)
Phantom Lord
No Remorse
Fight Fire with fire
Trapped Under Ice
Battery
The Thing that should not be
Damage Inc.
...And Justice for All
Eye of the Beholder
Dyers Eve
Enter Sandman
Holier than Thou
Wherever I may Roam
Don't Tread on Me
My Friend of Misery
The Struggle Within

Songs WITHOUT a wah solo:
The Four Horsemen
Jump in the Fire
Whiplash
Seek and Destroy
Metal Militia
Ride the Lightning
Fade to Black
Escape (has delay in some parts, but no wah)
Creeping Death
The Call of Ktulu (has delay in some parts, but no wah)
Master of Puppets
Welcome Home - Sanitarium
Disposable Heroes (has wah in other parts of the song but not in the solo)
Leper Messiah
Orion
Blackened
One
The Shortest Straw
Harvester of Sorrow
The Frayed Ends of Sanity
To Live is to Die
Sad but True
The Unforgiven
Through the Never
Nothing Else Matters
Of Wolf and Man
The God that failed

IF you count the improv. at the end of "For Whom the Bell tolls" then yes, it has wah in it.

REMEMBER, the non-wah solos probably have a different effect to them...so if you think there's wah in it, there actually isn't.

I agree with this list except I am pretty sure that there is a wah used in Leper Messiah after the sweeping. I dont listen to load/reload enough to tell you exact songs, but Kirk did go a little wah crazy in the 90's. But live, you can expect him to touch the wah at least once a song.

View entire thread: Rate the Albums
Posted by cloudnine on 10/25/04 @ 10:47 PM    Post subject: Rate the Albums

Hokay! It's time for one of the toughest exercises I've come across.

It's rating the eight Metallica albums in order of worst to best: KEA, RTL, MOP, AJFA, Black, Load, Reload, St. Anger (studio, original material only - Garage Inc and S&M don't count) - and boy, did I have a tough time.

Consider everything - the songwriting, the music, the general feel of the album - EVERYTHING :P.

Before I start, let me say that I truly DISLIKE no Metallica album (aside from Re-Load). They all have their respective merits - I just want to create controversy!

Here goes nothing:

8. Re-load
I just can't like this album. All the songs except for Fuel (which really gets tired after a few listens), Unforgiven II (just SLIGHTLY below the original in quality) Fixxxer, and parts of Carpe Diem Baby just...suck. There's nothing memorable about any of the other tracks, and all of them are just boring, uninspired, and are generally just sub-par. What's the point of hearing good lyrics if there's no good melodies to put them to?
7. Kill 'em All
While I certainly appreciate that this was their first album and they hadn't really found their sound yet, the lyrics on this one were pretty juvenile. Of course, they were still in their teens - quite excusable. There are some awesome riffs to be found here (Four Horsemen, Hit the Lights, Seek and Destroy) and I don't DISLIKE the album - but it definitely wasn't their best.
6. St. Anger
As we all know, this was a total departure from the "usual" Metallica sound - rough, gritty, and personal, this one totally polarized people. I like this album a lot - but it can get tired after awhile, and let's face it the crafting of the songs wasn't nearly as complex (especially when you look at the guitar tabs) as their earlier work. Like I said - you have to understand the history behind this one to "get" it. Good album - but not their best.
5. Ride the Lightning
Ouch! Putting RTL as their 5th-best album will get me some flack here. However, I feel their second album has definite low points (Trapped Under Ice, Escape) and I can't say I love the title track all that much. Make no mistake - Fade to Black, Creeping Death, Ktulu are all amazing pieces of songwriting - but I feel this album is weaker than their later efforts. Of course, it includes the ultimate crowd-pleaser For Whom The Bell Tolls, too - which is pretty shibby.
4. Black Album
What can be said about this album that hasn't already been said? Mostly abandoning the thrash sound that defined them, hard rock became the flavour of this album - and what a delicious one it was. Incredibly well-designed songs, there's no doubt that this album contains TONS of winners. Aside from all the "big" songs (Sandman, Sad But True, Unforgiven), in here contains the ultimate power ballad of all time in Nothing Else Matters and the killer God that Failed, Friend of Misery, and Through the Never. This album has some duds, though - Struggle Within and Holier than Thou are sub-par compared to the rest.
3. Load
Metallica takes a sharp left turn with this one - but what a gorgeous turn it is. Hetfield's voice is in its best years, with him being able to sing both hard and soft seemingly effortlessly here. Probably the most personal and finely crafted lyrics of any Metallica work, this album contains two incredible epics (Outlaw Torn, Bleeding Me) which are truly gorgeous. Ronnie is another overlooked gem, with incredible lyrics based on a school shooting. I also like the "fight" songs here - Ain't My Bitch and 2x4 are fun deviations from the album's general theme of looking inward to find deeper meaning. Except for The House That Jack Built and Thorn Within, every track on this one is a classic in my eyes.
2. ...And Justice for All
The ONLY thing that kept this one out my the top spot was the production. This album has my favourite Metallica song on it (One) and other killer tracks like Dyers Eve and Blackened. There exists on this album the second-best Metallica instrumental BY A HAIR - To Live is to Die, dedicated to Cliff. My complaints are the bloated nature of some of the cuts (the title track, Shortest Straw) and the obvious shoddy production. The bass is totally nonexistant, and this one has WAY too much treble in all the instruments and the voice.
1. Master of Puppets
Considered Metallica's masterpiece by many, I consider it to be essentially tied with AJFA for best album. The classics are all here - Master of Puppets, Sanitarium, Damage Inc, and the best instrumental ever to grace a Metallica record (Orion). The Thing That Should Not Be is heavyness incarnate, and Disposable Heroes is a precursor to AJFA's One. I can't say I like Battery - I never really could get into it. This album simply has the best song structure of any album of theirs - time changes, interludes, and classic solos reign here.

Like I said - this list was extremely hard to put together, and I can't really say I like MOP over AJFA or vice versa.

Your opinions?

okay....

My very first Metallica concert was on March 2, 2004. It was the First stop on "The Madly In Anger With The World Tour," in the US. Godsmack opened for them and played one awesome show. Although their sound system was alittle off, I enjoyed it. Sully did an awesome drum solo. Metallica played Blackened to open their set. They played Frantic & St. Anger. The rare song they played was Holier Than Thou.
The only thing I didn't like about the concert was the fact the Video was competely set on Lars the whole time. I had second floor seats, so I stood the whole time. My legs fucking hurt like hell that night. After the concert I was walking out of the stadium back to the car and it started raining, that was a great finish too a great night. Maybe someday I'll be able to see them again, however I am not sure I will cuz tickets are hard to get nowadays here.

Well guys, YOU ROCK!!!!!!!! you assembled the best metal band on this planet.  I admire you guys because you have the potential to move masses of people and I am one of them.  You have write the best metal songs and your creativity to keep writing is incredible.  Personally, when I listen to your songs, It's a therapy for me, they make me feel good and they've play an important role in my life on a daily basis.  I have overcome a lot of many problems thanks to your music 'cause I have been related to some of your songs especially 'Fade To Black','The Unforgiven', 'Master of Puppets', 'Holier Than Thou', 'Wherever I May Roam' and most recently 'Frantic'.  I play guitar, like many others out there, and I can play all of your songs, From 'Kill'em All's Hit the lights' all the way to 'St. Anger's All Within My Hands' in my guitar.  Some of them were a challenge to learn and still a challenge to play but I pratice every day.  I have seen you guys several times and it's an AWESOME experience.

JAMES HETFIELD:  You're the best songwriter/lyricist and rhythm guitar player of all time.  The strong muscle in Metallica's sound and the best frontman of a band out there.  I truly admire you for going into rehab to overcome all problems and put in order your thoughts and  emotions cause that was needed for Metallica to take the next step and start a new chapter.  YOU RULE!!!

LARS UlRICH:  The best metal drummer on this planet.  You got style, speed, and you play every song like if you were playing the best song ever, with a lot of energy and enthusiasm, PERFECT. You are the guy who always gives interviews on radio and T.V. and also the guy who started it all, who put Metallica together 20 years ago and you did an excellent job, THANK YOU SO MUCH!

KIRK HAMMETT:  You're my favorite lead guitar player.  Your solos are always full of drama and very constructive.  You inspire me to pick up my guitar and start playin' all day.  No blame for no solos on 'St.Anger' cause  I think this album was like a therapy for you guys and your were experimenting new things.

ROBERT TRUJILLO:  'The God that save Metallica'.  You ROCK!!!!  you are devoted to your music cause and your energy, combined with James', Lars', and Kirk's makes the band sound strong and ALIVE!!!  I saw you guys last year's SUMMER SANITARIUM Tour and you were rockin' man.  I'm 100% sure that you will prove it and blow out the world on the next album.

Well, guys, there's no doubt that METALLICA is best metal band ever and I'm about to see you in concert again. I hope it won't take another seven years to make another album cause you got a new bassist and he needs to prove the world what he is made of.  Also hope to hear speed and awesome heavy riffs and of course, how i can forget to say it, we need SOLOS.

Thank for existing, that makes my life and Thanx for being

M E T A L L I C A

P.S. If you read this guys, I went to your concert when you stop by at the AMERICAN AIRLINES CENTER Dallas, TX. on November 17th 2004. You really showed and proved to us how Madly In Anger With The World you are.  FUCKIN' THANKS!!!
