Oh and if you start saying that Motley Crue shouldn't be under the same category as Metallica, Motley Crue isn't metal. It's shit. How bout this... Black Sabbath ,Iron Maiden, metallica, Heathen, Dream Theater, Slayer, all that shit can just go under metal. Led Zeppelin is pure rock. |

| Progressive metal is my favorite genre (Dream Theater, Opeth, Tool, Neurosis) but Metallica is my fav. band.
Otherwise it's Thrash (Megadeth, Lipid, early Met), "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon) and Doom (My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost)
I don't like any kind of metal with immature lyrics. I am aware that KEA has immature lyrics, but Met evolved through the years. Generally i'm turned off by lyrics about sex and satinism. And ofcoarse I hate Nu-metal I don't even consider it a subgenre of metal... |

i dont know if i agree with you on the iron maiden thing. i think brave new world comperes very closeley to somewhere in time sound wise. and i think dance of death is cousin to powerslave. i dont think they have changed at all really, other than now they have 3 guitars and steves bass sounds a little more subdued. otherwise they are the same crazy fucks we were introduced to 20+ years ago. |

| I'm not really a vocalist since I've never taken any lessons or sung in a band or anything.
For a long time I thought I totally sucked at singing untill we had a singing test in music class. We were brought in one by one to sing a Beatles song for our music teacher and he would tell us if we were any good and in what pitch our voice were. I sang "Let It Be" in G-major, and he told me my voice would suit a HIGHER key, then I sang it in A and it worked. Apearently I have high pitched vocals... I tried singing Maiden, Zep'lin and DP songs and it worked. I could hit the notes and it sounded somewhat cool... Now I'm trying to sing Dream Theater. Most of it is still way too hard though.
I think I would do pretty good as a rock vocalist actually. When we sing a song in music class, that is too high for the other boys to hit the notes, It's usually no problem for me. |

| I see alot of you are just bashing the bands that made such a difference in music that they are raved about for good reason, while their music however sounds dated and perhaps not all that good, while their impact cannot be questioned... Should we not thank Zeppelin for getting Heavy music recognition even when critics hated them, should we not love Hendrix for his distortion pioneering and solos which inspired countless guitarists, or Slayer for birthing Death-Metal and for influencing more bands than you can count, not thank Nirvana (I fucking love them btw, no matter if you all say they are overrated) for coming along and destroying all the overproduced hair-bands?
Even KISS for being the most over-the-top band out there...
Personally I think Dream Theater is overrated though, technical ability has a way of overshadowing the point, making good music, like some of their stuff, but thay are IMO not all they're hyped up to be.
EDIT: to the guy who mentioned Ozzy, I mean, how can you possibly deny the influence he's amde, both with Sabbath and as a solo artist?! Don't know if that's really what you were doing, but I'm just asking, Ozzy is the godfather, just look at how much he's doing for the community even now, (almost 40 years after he played a big part in starting the whole "metal" thing) by putting on OzzFest.
Without the Ozz, there would be none of the bands we have today... |

| i suggest that you simply explore the vast amount of music out there. i listen to a wide variety of stuff but you want only metal so start with the old school stuff.
Black Sabbath - everything really but first 6(eponymous through sabotage) would be a good start. Led Zep(not really metal but...) - get "remasters" and then decide what you want. Judas Priest - get "metal works" and same as above. Rush - same as above. get collection called "retrospection" or retrospective or something... i forget. Motorhead - if you like Ace of Spades you can check out their other stuff. Venom - not quintessential for me but get "black metal".
i'll leave out the obvious metallica, megadeth, iron maiden(anything... same style through out until recently), dream theater etc.
Bathory - get blood, fire, death or hammerheart and see if you like it. Slayer - everything except the last one "god hates us all"(crap to my ears.) "seasons in the abyss" would be a good start, got fast stuff, mid paced stuff, great album. Death - started out as primitive death metal and became a technically brilliant progressive-death outfit. check out "human", "individual thought patterns" and "symbolic." Sepultura - everything upto Roots. the last album isn't bad either.
that would be for starters. in Metal. you should also check out what the others have said like AIC, Tool and soundgarden, faith no more and stuff. also much pink floyd, doors and so on.
more Death, Doom, Black etc. can follow. once you know this stuff and if you like it you won't need to ask except in rare cases. all the best collecting the stuff! :) |

| I'll cast three votes, one for AC/DC, one for Iced Earth, and one for Dream Theatre.
I wasnt going to say anything about the other stuff, but Dream Theater being overated? YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT MUSIC IF THATS WHAT YOU THINK! Its ok to not like their music and what not, but they are one of the most if not the most musically talented group in existance. However, I do hate their singer, but the instrumentals are amazing. Each one of them are complete Virtuosos at their instruments as well as having tons of knowledge about music.
As for the Metallica being pop, it depends on what you consider pop. The real definition of pop is just popular music which could be anything that the majority of the people like. But over the years, pop has been labeled as being upbeat solo or group singing with background music. Ex: Britney Spears, Boy bands, etc. This label has also become very much based on image and less and less on music, and thats why many people (mainly musicians) are opposed to it. Also the fact that the music is so highly produced that it doesnt even sound like the person anymore.
As for the actual question, I agree that KISS is overated and they even admited it themselves. But it wasnt their music that made them great, it was their show and stage presents. I also believe that Eric Clapton is very overated. Nirvana is way up there as well as almost all music out these days(especially punk). Now for the two that I am gunna get burned for: Slash and Slayer Slash is pretty much a classic rock knock off with more gain. As for Slayer, they have some cool riffs, but they are such sloppy players which is hidden behind a bunch of fuzzy gain. All they do is play as fast as they can. The majority of their solo's are way off beat and they use absolutely no phrasing at all. |

Everyone's raving about Dillinger Escape Plan. I think they suck. If you want to make everything technical that's fine with me. But a simple beat with a simple riff can sound just as good if not better. If being technical makes music better, and if Dream Theatre is as technical as you say, then why doesn't everyone like them? And I'll also say this, just because you know how to play your instrument doesn't mean you know how to make music with it.

Have you heard of an album called Ayreon? Its a concept album with a whole heap of different singers including james labrie, devin townsend, and mikael akerfelt(or how ever you spell it). Its an album that goes throught a really intense story line where each singer had been hand piacked to suit different emotions that the man in the story is experiencing. Its hard to explain but its a really cool concept album that i think you might like |

| | I started on 4 string, then moved to 5, and I also have a 4 string acoustic. I'm planning to get a 6 string next, just so I can play Dream Theater songs easier. If you're playing a lot of low stuff, but hardly any solos/high octave stuff, then 5 string is the way to go, if you're playing on the high strings and a lot of solos, 6 is more versatile. If you're only playing Metallica stuff, or alongside standard tuned 6 string guitars and you're mostly in a support role, 4 should be plenty. BTW, Acoustic bass sounds great, especially for mellow stuff. Also, have you heard the intro to the Clansman by Iron Maiden? The acoustic bass on that is the reason I bought one, and they aren't really that expensive, about £300 |

| VENOM - “We are all in shock at the very sad news of the shooting at the DamagePlan concert, this news has left everyone feeling numb, all of Venom offer their sympathy to the families of the deceased & injured.” Cronos commented: "I'm devastated by this news, DamagePlan are all good mates, I've known Dimebag since the early days of Pantera, he was such a great bloke, words can't describe how sad I feel."
DESTRUCTION - “Only the god die young. Your music will live on in the heads and hearts of the metal community! R.I.P. "Dimebag" Darrell.”
GOD AMONG INSECTS - “Dimebag Darrell 1966 - 2004. Rest in peace. Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Dimebag Darrell. Rest in peace, man.
Wherever you are.”
IN FLAMES - “Our deepest thoughts and sympathies goes out to friends and families of the victims in the terrible tragedy in Ohio. // In Flames"
BARRY SPARKS - “We had a great show last night in Spokane, but unfortunately the happy mood of the night changed just as we were getting ready to leave. We heard the tragic news about "Dimebag" Darrell and the other victims of the shooting in Columbus Ohio. I still find it hard to believe someone could be this deranged and evil or just plain stupid?? Our thoughts and prayers go out to the band, friends and family members. God bless you Dimebag Darrell. Barry.”
MOTORHEAD - “The music world was saddened today by last evenings events in Columbus, OH. All of us at imotorhead.com wish to convey our deepest sympathies to the families of those that died. Lemmy, Mikkey & Phil also asked us to post these thoughts:
“To Vinnie & All Concerned:
Man, I am so fuckin sorry. You know I loved Dimebag and I'm about as sorry as you can get. Glad you're OK though. If there's anything you need help with, you got my number somewhere, OK. Thinking of you. Regards, condolences - Lemmy.”
“I'm so sorry, we'll dedicate the set to Dimebag tonight. - Phil Campbell.”
“My deepest sympathy to everyone affected by this tragedy. Mikkey Dee.”
SUPERJOINT RITUAL A message regarding Dimebag Darrell's death from one of the camps DAMAGEPLAN and PANTERA fans have been waiting to hear from. SUPERJOINT RITUAL's Hank Williams III has posted the following statement at the band's official website:
"It just ain't fuckin' right. Alcohol should have killed Dime, not a fuckin piece of shit worthless fuck with a gun trying to recreate the John Lennon's killing. This happened on the same day, if you didnt know. Dime will never die EVER!!! His style of guitar playing took metal to a whole new chapter in metal history.
For those of us that were lucky enough to be around Dime as a person, or see him jam in no matter what band it was, you know he liked to have a good time. In his honor, crank up his fuckin music and get motherfuckin wasted on whiskey!!!!!!!
And no matter what was said with all the shit talking between Superjoint Ritual and Damageplan, that's all it was, nothing but talk!! If we had ever been in the same room together as both bands, it would have been cool. Kinda like seeing 'ole family.... I'm sure there will be plenty of new rumors surfacing and fingers pointing at people to blame, but Philip (Anselmo) and the rest of Superjoint Ritual are in a state of shock and blown away by this tragedy! We do not take this shit lightly... What this kid did is so fucked up its not even conceivable. May you burn in the hottest corners of hell, you pistol-packin' pussyfuck...
R.I.P Dimebag. You rocked harder than you will ever know!!!!"
OZZY OSBOURNE - "It's Just Terribly, Terribly Sad ... Dimebag was a dear friend of mine," Ozzy Osbourne said. "I'm absolutely beside myself with grief. I can't for the life of me understand why someone would do this. Pantera toured with me many, many times. I'll always remember the signed guitar that he gave me at my 50th birthday party. My heart goes out to Dime's family, his fans and the other innocent victims who were killed in this senseless tragedy. It's just terribly, terribly sad."
BYZANTINE - “I had a friend call me last night from Ohio to tell me that one of our idols had been shot to death. Dimebag Darrell, who most likely all of us looked up to and wanted to drink with, was dead. He and 4 others had been shot and killed while Damageplan were playing a concert in very nearby Columbus, OH. This guy walked straight on stage, yelled at Dime, and then shot him point blank in the head. All the while his fans had to watch in horror. Let's all take today to put on some Pantera or Damageplan and remember the coolest, most down to earth, closest thing to a REAL rockstar that you could ever find. Long live Darrell Abbott.
We love you brother. If Stevie Ray Vaughan would have picked up a KISS album instead of blues, you would get Dimebag Darrell.”
MACHINE HEAD - “Machine Head are devastated by the horrific news. Our deepest sympathy and condolences to the Abbott family, Damageplan and former members of Pantera. Our thoughts are with you all.”
KEVIN SHIRLEY (Producer) - “JESUS CHRIST! I just saw Dimebag Darrel was shot and killed at a gig in Ohio last night - that is terrible news. I am saddened and shocked. My deepest sympathy and condolences to all his family - I just mixed a Damageplan track for the Punisher soundtrack earlier this year. Oh, that breaks my heart! SHIT! Enough of the fucking guns already! This is bad.”
ANTHRAX’ Scott Ian - "I am devastated as I'm sure we all are. All I can convey at this moment are my condolences to Rita and Vinnie and the whole family. My heart is with you. Love, Scott"
ZAKK WYLDE - "We lost Dime tonight. We have no official details, and I personally am not saying anything. I want to thank Shawn Sexton (Sierra Nevada) from sdmfworldwide.com for calling Chad Lee and I in Chicago and bringing it to our attention, first and foremost. Right now, I myself, and the entire Doome Crew Inc., those I've spoken to, can't even begin to try to fuckin' assemble words in sentences to tell you guys how we feel. Give us a few days to circle the wagons. Whatever comes across officially from the family will be conveyed, as always, humbly by us."
KILLSWITCH ENGAGE’s Howard Jones - "This is insane and this is beyond travesty. This is beyond anything I've ever heard. This shouldn't happen in or outside of the rock and metal community. He will be missed and mourned as a person, as a musician, and as a friend."
MEGADETH’s Dave Mustaine - “There is nothing unique or clever to this post, and what I want to say has no doubt already been said throughout the metal community, by countless others whom were more closer to Darrell than me by now. However, knowing he was murdered tonight, I wish to thank and remember Darrell for his amazing life and the gift that he shared with me and so many other fortunates. I pray for Darrell's family and friends; specifically for their healing, their peace, and their understanding of this tragedy in this time of need. I send my deepest heartfelt condolences to the Abbott family, to Darrell's friends, and to the fantastic PANTERA and DAMAGEPLAN fans around the world. We must never forget his life, and his gifts, his genius, his terrific personality, and the legacy he left behind to remember him by. Darrell, I will see you in heaven and I, like so many more, love you brother. You will be missed.”
SATYRICON - "The show tomorrow in Colmbus, Ohio is naturally cancelled as the venue is now a crime scene. No other shows will be affected. Do not let this tragedy stop you from going to metal shows and don`t let anyone tell you that this has ANYTHING to do with metal music."
TYPE O NEGATIVE Here's to you, Darrell The staff at ton.net are shocked and speechless at the senseless loss of Darrell and the rest of the victims from Tuesday Night...we would like to express our deepest regards and sympathy to their family and friends in this confusing and troubled time.
Johnny asked to have this posted:
I'm not really sure what to say or how to put it in words to describe what I'm feeling at the moment. The world has lost a genuine person, one of the true greats. We've lost a great friend, some have lost an idol, but more tragic than any of that, a father lost his son & Vinnie lost his brother. Since Type O Negative first toured with Pantera in 1995, both bands have remained close friends. No matter how much time would pass, whenever we would get together it always seemed like we had just seen each other the night before. Touring with them was an amazing experience that I still talk about ten years later. I have so many memories of Darrell and all of it included laughter. Hanging out with Darrell, Rita, Vinnie, Pantera and Damageplan was always an adventure. You never knew what was going to happen but it usually wound up with your stomach hurting from laughing so much and a really nasty hangover in the morning. I know that Darrell was an amazing guitar player and many know him just for that. I would have to take a step back every once in a while to see him for that because that wasn't how I knew him. I knew him to be a very enthusiastic, generous, animated and one of the funniest guys that just happened to be one of the greatest guitarists of our time. He had a way with people that after you met him, you became a part of his family. We always considered him family and we're devastated. Heaven definitely has its hands full now that Darrell's shown up. Even though I have written this about Dime, I want to send our condolences to the families and friends of the others that were so senselessly taken away from us on Wednesday night.
Johnny MIKE PORTNOY (DREAM THEATER) I wasn't gonna post anything because this whole tragedy isn't about me or how I feel.. and I feel so helpless and insignificant at such an unbelievable time as this... But after sitting in front of my computer screen in disbelief for the last 24 hours since I heard about this last night I finally felt I needed to at least acknowledge how absolutely horrible I feel about this nightmare. Actually, I am sick to my stomach.
Dime was an incredible talent who I've admired since the beginning when we had both just signed to Atco Records. It's been many years since I've hung with him or any of the Pantera guys - but my memories with him and the guys were always of great fun and filled with crazy drunken insanity. He lived each and everyday to the fullest. In fact, I never could believe how he could even function (both on and off stage) with the way he partied and lived life.
I feel so sorry for Vinnie and the rest of the band and family.
Words really cannot describe the heartache I've had all day. This is as tragic and unbelievable as Lennon getting killed. But this hits home even closer because he was ONE OF US.
I really cannot believe it...

| Posted by: DooD Posted on: 20. Sep 2004 at 23:31 I know that Dream Theater playes pretty good especially with Petrucci, but their songs are just boring. Its not really melody and its not heavy either.
What the fuck!?
Boring? That's the last fucking thing you can say about DT. Thier music has intensity, emotion and melody all in constant change/progress. You can clearly see they all know a shit load theory with the key/time changes and the varios scales and techniques used in solos. I could go on for hours talking about why it's some of the best music on the planet, but I think most of you would fall asleep reading all the praising words.
Not heavy? Hmm I guess you never heard "This dying soul" or "Endless sacrifice" |

| Alright ..
Obviously some dudes here are exagerrating Cliff's influence over Metallica and even way over-rating him as a bassist.
Cliff was a great Bassist, that is for sure and I believe if he lived till now he would have competed with Dream Theater's bassist. However, naming him "The Greatest Musician Ever!" or "The Greatest Bassist of All time" is just too much. It is true that Cliff was guiding MetallicA into what they were back then, but lets not forget that most of the riffs in the first three albums were made by Hetfield and Mustaine and Cliff basically just put the bass line for it.

| An interview with Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater
http://www.drummersdigest.com/en/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=87&Itemid=25
the bit I found most interesting:
"The interview is almost over, but as a last question I ask Mike about the rumours saying that he and Mikael Åkerfeldt, the mastermind behind Swedish metal act Opeth, are planning to do something together.
“Yeah, he’s coming down tonight actually. Most of the guys are. I’ve been a fan of theirs for years, and we’ve become friends the last couple of years. He and I and Steven Wilson have talked about doing something together. Hopefully some time soon we’ll be able to coordinate our schedules and make it happen. I think me and Steven want to make it heavy, and I think Mikael wants to, uh, not be heavy. Because me and Steven want to do stuff that we can’t do with Porcupine Tree and Dream Theater, and get to some really heavy stuff. And I think that Mikael wants to get away from the heavy stuff because he does that all the time with Opeth, so who knows. Maybe we’ll meet somewhere in the middle. I think it’ll be great. I mean, I’ve had great experiences collaborating with other people, especially people who are the kind of leaders of their bands. That was kind of what Transatlantic was about, since Neal Morse and Roine Stolt are kind of the leaders of their bands, you know. It was a great creative environment, and I think a similar chemistry would happen with Steven and Mikael.”
This will be amazing |

| Sonita Arctica - Fade to Black (cover) :P
If you like Metallica I suggest giving Megadeth a try, check out their newest album, it's got some of their best material on it.
If that ain't what you're looking for, hell why not some power metal? Dragonforce is a great power metal band!
Maybe just want something down to earth, you just want METAL well I'd suggest Iron Maiden, they've got thrash sound, power metal lyrics *in some songs* and are all around a good band.
Lookin' for something OLDSCHOOL dawg g? Well try some Sabbath they are an amazing band, and everyone should love Sabbath ;)
Something relaxing? Why not death metal! :P Or try something of a completely different genre, Pink Floyd for instance or Radiohead.
Hell try Progressive metal - Queensryche has some great songs *lots consider them rock though* and Dream Theater are gods at whatever they do. As previously mentioned you can listen to some Opeth, they have some really really beautiful sounds. It all blends together and we get an awesome product in the end.
Anything else? Ask me :)

| I really couldnt care less about all of this.
Then you probably don't have to post here, yesno?
I post my opinion because I have freedom of speech, you fascist.
The reason Genesis and Soulfly and Darkthrone are still on the list, is because the whole system of "vote off the worst band" is ultimately flawed.
1) Peoples opinions change all the time. Lets say that I was forced to hear a lot of metalcore all day, so In Flames will annoy me more than usual. so I might vote and say they suck more than anything. But the next day, Dead Kennedys is particularly annoying.. another example: a year ago, who at this forum liked Dream Theater? Not many. But in recent months, we got a lot more fans here. IT IS TOTALLY RANDOM what bands are chosen to be voted off.
2) NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE ARE VOTING. Not enough people care about this to even bother, so it doesnt represent all of encycmet, and even the people who DO vote in one round, who says they will bother to vote again?
3) The bands on the list are NOT A COMPLETE LIST of bands that deserve to be there. There are also ones there that just have no business being there at all.
4) NONE OF YOU HAVE HEARD ALL OF THESE BANDS. You cant decide with impunity that Mudvayne is a shitty band after hearing two songs on the radio.
5) THE RATING SYSTEM IS FLAWED. It would make more sense to have a list of bands in a certain genre, and vote based on similar criteria. You cant compare Dream Theater to Iron Maiden. Its not the same kind of music. Who says one is better than the other? You just cant rate music this way. It isnt fair and doesnt make sense to say Edguy and Dragonforce are shitty bands if they got voted off. |

| Posted by drumsteen on 12/06/04 @ 11:20 PM Post subject: Re: Bands Who Were Influenced BY Metallica | |
| ill definantly be able to help you on this one. First ill give you the name of the band and what they have said about Metallica (i like to read up on these things) Dream Theater-they are obsessed with tallica and have covered the entire master of puppets album from start to finish. Mike portnoy their drummer has cited lars as an influnce on many occassions and said metallica were partly the reason why he started drumming.
Slayer--even though in recent times there has been tension, it was said that slayer were huge fans of metallica, and kerry king and jeff hanneman would go to all their shows during the kill em all tour.
Pantera-Its been said by phil that kill em all is one of his favourite metal albums of all time. Vinnie Paul said that lars' drumming on master of puppets was briliant and was well thought out, while dime bag said that james has the fastest picking hand out of all rythym guitarists and is the king of riffs.
Slipknot--Guitarist mick thomson was in a metallica cover band when he was growing up and fade to black was the first song he played live. Corey the singer had said how psyched he was when he was lining up all those years back to buy the and justice for all album.
fear factory- when asked who they would love to tour with they said metallica, and burton c. bell said he watched metallica at the australian big day out and said they are still some of the best performers to date and that his fav. song is fade to black.
Mudvayne-played with tallica on sumer sanitarium. Chad the singer claimed how he grew up listening to metallica and even wore a kill em all t-shirt for their mosr recent live dvd. The bass player said he would sit down and play to seek and destroy all the time. and when he was on stage with them during seek and destroy live he was in awe.
Godsmack- obviously have nothing but praise for their touring buddies and are amazed at their endurance and ability this far into their career.
korn- -also played at the icon awards in honour of the boys. It was recently said by munky and head that they watched metallica rehearse before a show for two hours, watched them wipe the sweat off and then got up on stage and played a blistering 3 hour set. It was then said it showed them that they need alot more pratice.
The list is really endless, and i mean who in the metal world hasnt somehow been touched by the kings of metal. If you need any more please feel free to ask. Hope that helps |

| i dont like classical but those are real instruments played by real talented people with a huge orchastra, usually there songs are like up to 30 minutes.
i'm like classical very much...usually symphony genre was the longest cos there was written in 4 movement. 1 movement up to 8-10 minutes + other 3 movements it can reach up to 45-1 hours...
Longest modern music that i heard so far was Dream Theater - Change of Seasons & Manowar - Triumph of Steel album if i not mistaken...
