the live thing is unfortunately true but i wouldn't imagine many drummers who can play that song the whole way through due to the excessive amount of light speed double kick. I heard that when they recorded it, he did a chorus at a time. Either way he still got up to those ridiculous speeds and he has replicated that speed many a time on different songs live, like battery and damage inc. Even though the duration of double kick is not as long as dyers eve he still can carve it up like a mother fucker

Well both bands really use both picking styles extensively. Hetfield does alternate picking for songs like fight fire with fire, damage inc and whiplash. Slayer use alternate picking for songs like angel of death, disciple and ditto head. And on the other hand Jaymz uses down picking for songs like blackened, puppets, creeping death, through the never etc. Slayer also use down strokes for songs like war ensemble (verses), and mandatory suicide. At the end of the day Het is faster than King and Hanneman and has a better overall rythym style of playing. He is GOD!

I'm with LAL. No one with a real musical ear could deny that the symphony album was a great piece of music.
Then again, this is VH1, the same people who did that hideous Top 100 Songs of the Last 25 Years list. The only Metallica entry was Sandman at #88, and Sandman is like Metallica's 20th best song. They completely left off Fade to Black, Puppets, One, Ride the Lightning, Orion, Ktulu, Damage Inc, - all of which should have been there and okay, maybe I'm a little biased. But the top 100 were terrible. Look the freaking thing up - it will make you mad.

i'm sorry i don't agree with you. blackened and battery are great openers. One is a song that is supposed to be played in the end of the set. it's just the way that it is. Damage Inc is a great ender. but it could be cool as an opener aswell. maybe struggle within too but i don't really like that song. maybe Orion could work. it could be interesting. but a prefer a song with vocals as a opener. i don't know about St. Anger. it's a "in-the-middle-of-the-set-song". and then we have Astronomy. i love that song and i really hope that they are going to play it live sometime. but not as a opener! it's too soft. an opener is supposed to be fast. as blackened and battery. Astronomy is not an opening song. but i would love to here it live. that's just my opinion.

Easy, easy! Its overrated but it still kicks ass dude.

Definately overrated...but every Metallica fan should see it live at least *once*. The problem with this is that its their 'BIG BREAKTHRU HIT' so some people (not fans...but people who like Enter Sandman.) go to the shows just to hear that one song! For the fun of it...

I understand that it's gotta stay on the playlist, but I also agree that it would be nice to have it disappear for a few shows next tour and get replaced by something else in HIGH DEMAND by the fans for encores. But heavier...ie. Damage Inc, Am I Evil?, Dyers Eve, Frayed Ends Of Sanity etc.

I know how some of you feel though, I went through a period where I loved it, then I got tired of seeing it all the fucking time...and absolutely HATED it >:(. Then I started liking it again...and now it's yet another great Metallica song to me. ::)

Well during the justice and black tour he had a set of hi hats to his left and right. Id suggest that the main reason for this is he often thrashed on the hi hats to his right hand side, during the faster songs. The fact that your hands dont cross over means its prob easier to do a fill across the toms and still continue with the beat.I know its more convenient for me. He has replaced the right hats now with a china cymbal, so he usually thrashes on those for songs like st anger, no remorse, motorbreath etc. He may also have had his hats on his left side open so he could still clamp on and off with his left foot, This would mean he could leave the ones on the right closed for a different and crisp sound. Hope that helps! :P

Lars's got the Tama X-hat rigth after Lightning was recorded. He did use it for the very fast songs. Fight fire with fire, Damage inc, Battery etc. He said he could get his snare hand further back.

I;ve had this 2 two record live show of Metallica at the Felt Forum in New York City, on december 1, 1986. It is a limitied edition of 500, and I have copy 138. Its from Jester Productions. The front cover has a Brunette model named Adriana holding a sniper rifle, and the only title on the front is "Assassin". Back cover has pick of band (hammet, hetfield, ulrich, burton) and track listing as follows:

I started playing metallica songs when i started playing drums in in jan 2000. I was lucky to be able to start using a double kick pedal, whereas a lot of other drummers start with a single pedal and eventually switch to double kick. Their left foot may not have been as strong or controlled as the right. Any ways, me and my brother have been jamming on tallica songs for years. We have almost learnt every song from KEM to the black album. Our band has covered damage inc, battery and st. anger live. For me personally the most challenging tallica songs to play on drums are dyers eve, disposable geroes, blackened, st anger (endurance), trapped under ice (non stop double kick!) and maybe shortest straw. But after awhile they aint so hard. Thats just me being obsessed and practicing most their shit for hours a day. Lars' stuff is fun but there is soooo much more challenging stuff to play. He's still a great drummer though. Kewl :P

And so the second part of my review....

Disposible Heroes: Some people would say this song is OK, or perhaps say its a GOOD song. But personally for me, its a great one. This song is about a soldier, just like in One. Although both are about soldiers, both take totally different directions musically. One is a ballad that builds up, while this song just... BAM! Start out loud and heavy, we get into "You will die, when I say.. BACK TO THE FRONT" which I absolutely love! And then after hearing everything over again about 3 times (not sure exactly) we get some solos.. AND MORE HARD HEADBANGING METAL! "I WAS BORN FOR DIEING!!!!!!" haha I love this song! I felt they should take out abit at the end and shorten the song to 7:00 or so cause it is repetitive.. but I still love it!

Lepper Masiah: The weak point of the album. It is stil great though. You hear that from alot of people about a "weak point of an album being great still" and you say... nhh... it probably isnt.. But seriously this one is. Opens up slow but heavy.. and then at the 3:00 mark or so.. this gets crazy! FAST FAST and FAST! I love the 2nd half of this song I just find the slower beginning part abit annoying after abit.... So basically, its a great song that doesn't sound as good due to all the other masterpieces on this album. Underrated.

Orion: Instrumental! Metallcia's third! I love this soo much! The whole thing is great.. opening up nicely.. then a nic, beautiful soft part, followed by some blistering solos. Dont I say that about every song? Hard, Heavy, Fast? my goodness every song on here jsut rocks! And this is one of the songs that just stand out.

Damage Inc: Sometimes albums don't have great finishes or beginnings. I can't imagine ...And Justice without Blackened as the opening. I can't imagine Master of Puppets with The Thing That Should Not Be leading off the Cd. The same goes for the ending. I can't imagine Ride the Lightning without ktulu at the end (I like ending CDs with instrumentals sometimes) and I can't imagine this without Damage inc. After an incredible 40 minutes of MOP, you get one final song to blast.. and that song just happens to be maybe THE heaviest on the album? Atleast top 3. it's fast, heavy,( I say this again) and has a grat solo in the middle.... Man I can never get over how the opening of the song is just.... man! It's like a frikin explosion! This currently is maybe my favourite Tallica song!

Thanks Damage Inc, trust me - I and all the other clubbers there do realise how lucky we were.

But don't think you can never meet them, or get close enough to have a great experience. The day after I met them, they headlined the 2nd Big Day Out in Sydney, and I fought tooth and fucken nail to get to the front, on the rail. While they didn't come off the stage, I was close enough to make eye contact with Kirk and Jaymz, and even scored a pick. Anyone who goes to a concert has the opportunity to get this close, and I hope you, No_nAmEd_GiRl and wildchild do some day.

If you're in the US, your chances of getting really close are better cause they often play round stages where they get off and walk around the stage (like Cunning Stunts).

Hmm, Montreal October 4 2004 , The Unforgiven! why?, first time in 11 years ! But Battery, Sad but true, Damage Inc and Metal militia was awesome!

I walked into MVC today to buy some CD's like you do and i look in the metallica section and see this tribute album called the blackest album. I asked the guy at the till if i could listen. THEY PLAYED BATTERY, DAMAGE INC AND WHIPLASH WITH BLOODY DJ DECKS AND BEATBOXES >:( :o >:( :o >:( :o. Its fucking sacrilige!!!! Im surprised Lars didnt sue the fuckers!!!!

Why should Damage Inc of been 15 secs shorter. It's the PERFECT length to me.

St anger gets a 9.5 from me. I also feel that they are playing thrash stuff so fucking good right now. All the fast stuff on st anger is nothing like their old fast stuff. Metallica went through a period during the load and re-load tours where they barely played fast shit, and when they did it was at a pretty slow tempo in comparison to their early years. Whereas now, not only are they playing the likes of dyers eve, disposable heroes, metal militia and trapped under ice, they are playing them fucking just as fast as the 80's. Ive heard a couple of versions of battery, blackened, damage inc and motorbreath etc, from this tour and they are fucking smoke. Hetfields right hand is in overdrive and lars is thrashing on those hi hats like a little danish mother fucker. I love it :P!!!!!!!!!!!
