holy shit, yes! that fucking awesome, also on a more melodic note the call of ktulu would be an awesome opener.

Ktulu on S&M is the perfect opener. It's just .. I can't even find the words to describe how good it sounds.

ok i got it and i watched the dvd. Mods, staff, this aint a review, so you dont have to move it. Great show, it was really fucking funny at one part, because you see a thrashing metalhead with long hair headbanging, next to a respectable looking middle aged man tapping his foot to the music. great show, call of ktulu was fucking BRILLIANT on s&m. the orchestra did ruin some songs, like the end of one. your thoughts.

Orion (starting off with an instrumental? Why not?)
Ride the Lightning
...And Justice for All
St. Anger medley (Frantic, Sweet Amber, Shoot Me Again, My World, All Within My Hands, Some Kind of Monster)
The Unforgiven (to replace Fade or Sanitarium)
The Outlaw Torn
The Call of Ktulu
My Freind of Misery
*Ununsually long guitarsolo/jam
The Unnamed Feeling
Trapped Under Ice
----------------
The Unforgiven II (also to replace Fade or Sanitarium)
Disposeable Heroes (to replace MoP)
Low Man's Lyric (to replace NEM)
Bleeding Me (to replace One)
Fixxxer (to replace Sandman)
----------------
To Live is to Die

There are only 16 songs here, but the majority of them are very long.

man, mustaine deserves a lot more credit than ppl here give him. shit, he basically wrote half of RTL. call of ktulu was totally his, and james even said so in one interview.

metallica's sound up until MOP owes a lot to dave and cliff.

have you guys ever wondered why theres no more 'classical-influenced' songs after AJFA? its cos cliff and dave are gone. the most classical influenced songs since then are UNFORGIVEN (who i damn suspect that its cliffs) and MOTHING ELSE MATTERS (james admitted that it was a fluke, he was playing around with the guitar whilst on the phone)

i'm not a huge megadeath fan, but really...some ppl are hating too much on dave.

i'm not a huge megadeath fan, but really...some ppl are hating too much on dave.

First, The reason Dave is getting hated on so much is because of his attitude. He is an asshole, its that simple. He has been holding a grudge for 20 years even though it was his own fault he was thrown out and he also had one of the most sucessful metal bands ever and is not satisfied. Dave started megadeth to get back at james and lars for throwing him out and he has admitted to this. No way did he create the sound of metallica. That was more james than anyone cause megadeth sounds so much different. When he was in metallica, he pretty much only did solo's just like kirk did until later on. Thats how lead guitarists worked back in the 80's. Kirk didnt write any solo's on kill em all, but did give them some flavor cause all dave did was play fast boring scales with hardly any dynamics at all. Thats what kirk did for metallica, played metal solo's differently than every other band at the time. As for the songs sounding the same, the only ones I know are mechanix/four horseman which metallica did steal, but it wasnt copywrited or anything so its legal. They also did come out with the song first, so they win. He did write alot of the solo's on kill em all, but ive heard him play 3 songs from kill em all and kirk destroys him. He fits them so much better. Call of kutulu/hanger 18 is another that is very similar, but for whom the bell tolls/darkest hour sound nothing alike. I really like both and can play all the rhythyms perfectly. They are nothing alike. There are a few others I saw on a site, but those 2 are the only 2 I agree with. Dave can get alittle credit for the sound of kill em all and a little for RTL. But I dont think metallica really got into their sound til Master and he has no part of that. Megadeths first few albums sound alot like kill em all. Metallica was far ahead of them with their sound. Dave also didnt do anything classically for any band. That was all cliff for metallica. Their wasnt really any classical stuff for megadeth til marty friedman came. So he gets no credit for that either. Metallica changed for the better when dave left and for the worse when cliff died. That simple. I like megadeth, but I dont like Dave. He is a good musician, ok lead guitarist (at best), but he's just so pissed off all the time even though he is one of the biggest metal legends. If dave would have stayed, there would have been no megadeth and I dont think metallica would have been as good. And Exodus would have been better too!!

View entire thread: My S&M Review
Posted by cloudnine on 11/01/04 @ 02:05 AM    Post subject: My S&M Review

I just bought and viewed S&M on DVD (after hearing the cd briefly once) for the first time, and I was impressed. I had my doubts about the symphony blending with the band, but I was proven wrong (on most counts). So here goes, a track-by-track review!

(SFO = San Francisco Orchestra, by the way.)

Disc 1

1. Ecstasy of Gold

While it's just an intro, this was lovely in its setup, a nice smooth rendition for a song that was made to be symphonized!

9.5/10

2. Call of Ktulu

Wow. This song was again, MADE to be reworked by a symphony. Everything from the intro to the beautiful interludes are effortlessly intertwined. I always thought this was the weakest of the three Metallica instrumentals, but the addition of the symphony really helped it.

10/10

3. Master of Puppets

Eh. It was okay...I don't really think this song was made to be accompanied with a symphony. The opening verses and choruses were awkward, but when the interlude came along it went much better. Generally good, but the symphony really didn't make it better (what could, really). James was flawless, though.

7/10

4. Of Wolf and Man

Starting off with an uber-corny, yet somehow very fitting and funny joke by James, this one ripped into me. Good God - I never really liked this song, but I sure as hell do now. This is probably the most improved song with the addition of the orchestra, truly adding another dimension to a song I thought was pretty boring. Wow is all I have to say. Jason is especially awesome on this one.

9.5/10

5. The Thing That Should Not Be

I always thought the relatively poor production on Master of Puppets kept this one from becoming great, and it seems I was right. The SFO coupled with the flawless production truly makes this a heavy wonder to behold, with the lyrics sung beautifully - and insanely - by James. It's his favourite song, and I can see the love he shows for it.

9.5/10

6. Fuel

Argh. This song just DOES NOT fit with an orchestra. All the SFO does is provide background noise, and I just wanted it to be over. Heh.

5/10

7. The Memory Remains

Wow, is this version ever better than the record. The symphony adds an awesome background, while letting the fans sing the stuff usually done by that crazy witch Marianne Faithful was awesome. The power behind it was incredible, and this one just kicked ass.

9/10

8. No Leaf Clover

The first of the made-for-this-performance songs, this one is a heavy wonder, with some awesome (if repetitive) lyrics. Incredible vocal power by James coupled with an awesome solo for Kirk makes it one of the best songs they've created since Load. The made-for-orchestra feel makes the song that much better.

9.5/10

9. Hero of the Day

I always thought this song was kind of ho-hum after the soft part, but the orchestra with its soft, advancing melody helped this one out. I can't keep complimenting James on his vocals, though. Darn.

8.5/10

10. Devil's Dance

Sigh. I fucking hate this song. I couldn't even bring myself to finish the whole thing.

I have no idea because it sucks / 10

11. Bleeding Me

This gets one of my votes for best song of the compilation. James' incredible lyrics and vocals coupled with the GORGEOUS accompaniment of the orchestra makes for an incredible number. I can't compliment this one enough.

10/10

Disc 2

1. Nothing Else Matters

We all know this song was meant to be done by an orchestra one day, and it sure was. The SFO adds another layer of beauty to the song, and James' solo is nothing short of stunning - one of the best versions of it I've ever heard.

9.5/10

2. Until it Sleeps

This was a decent song, and the orchestra spiced it up. Especially in the intro - it complements' Jason's bass very well. It's generally well-done, but not much to write home about.

8/10

3. For Whom The Bell Tolls

I wanted this to kick ass, and it did! The orchestra just adds more power to the piece - basic, but awesome. The orchestra echoes are cool, too.

9.5/10

4. Minus Human

I can't decide which original piece is better - this or No Leaf Clover. At first I thought NLC, but I must say that this riff fucking kicks ass, and Jason's vocals are amazing on it. So I'll give it the same score and be diplomatic.

9.5/10

5. Wherever I May Roam

Nice piece, the orchestra adds a bit, but it's nothing particularly special. Just an all-around good job - especially James' powerful voice.

8.5/10

6. Outlaw Torn

This one's tied for Bleeding Me as the best cut of the discs. It's already an awesome song, but this version truly breathes new life into it. Everything is amazing here, from the intro to the interlude and then to the awesome trippy solos. James does an INCREDIBLE job here, and I can't stress this enough. Truly one of his best moments.

10/10

7. Sad But True

I wanted to like it, but this kind of annoyed me. Instead of crashing along with the chorus, the orchestra made it distracting, trying to create a background - it didn't work. The song is supposed to be a crunchy, stop and start job, and the orchestral part didn't fit.

6/10

8. One

This was going to be the big one for me. If they blew this, I was going to be very disappointed. I was pleasantly surprised. The orchestral opening was kickass, and the flowing melody behind the most beautiful intro Metallica has ever written was gorgeous. During the verses, the orchestra is so light and delicate - it's PERFECT. It turns angry during the "wish for death part", which is also awesome. I do have one huge gripe here, though. They really fucking blew the crashing middle part. These is probably the single most most POWERFUL section Metallica has ever written, with the guitars creating the machinegun effect that is one of the top sections of any song, ever. The orchestra playing over top of it totally ruined any power it had, and it played something really anti to what emotion the chords were supposed to convey. However, they pick it up again with a frantic type of section under Kirk's solos, which were awesome. The blowing of the middle section really kind of ruined what could've been one of the definitive versions of the song out there, though.

8.5/10

9. Enter Sandman

This one didn't work. It just felt WAY too mushy and overcrowded, with everyone seemingly playing something different that didn't fit at all. This song to me has always been about building up, and even the stop-start BAM part at the end lost its effect from everything just having no sense of direction or feeling. Probably the least successful song on the album in comparison to the original.

5/10

10. Battery

Niiiiiiiiice. I never really appreciated the song itself until recently, and this offered a cool rendition of the song. One complaint I had was the REALLY long waiting of absolutely nothing while they built up tension for the last encore. Yes, I want the concert in it's entirety, but 5 minutes of just people cheering and shots of the orchestra was lame. Anyways, this was a nice finisher to the performance, with a great, thoughtful rendition of the lyrics by James, who usually rushes it and garbles it. Very heavy, very good. Was there supposed to be an S&M 2 which was delayed by rehab or something? 'Cos Lars says "same time next year". Just a thought.

9/10

In short, I miss Jason Newsted. Okay we're digressing, but this, his last recorded performance with the band, really opens the wound of the total lack of decent backup vocals in the current lineup. His incredible powerful, underrated background singing really added another dimension to the music. Sigh. They should have treated him better, because they're hurting for it now.

In conclusion, this was a nice sidebar to Metallica's discography. Most of it is very well done, and I don't regret the $70 CAD (!) I spent on it - it was much better watching the thing on DVD then just listening to it, and I like the performances very much. My complaints are the lack of some songs that I would think have gone better with the orchestra then some that got on the setlist:     Unforgiven? WHERE THE HELL WAS THIS SONG AND WHY WASN'T IT INCLUDED, My Friend of Misery, Orion, Sanitarium, and FADE TO BLACK (another no-brainer, why the fuck not?). Another thing that was missing were Justice songs - they only played a single track - while they're hard speed/thrash metal, a nice medley of 3-4 songs or something would have worked well.

While my review may have seemed harsh, I really did enjoy the performances, and I'll be watching them again soon. A great addition to my collection. This thing will definitely appeal to prog-rock fans and others who like to see a new spin on the music they know and love. Good job, guys.

Hope you all liked the review.

if you havent looked on metontour.com yet, heres the news.
metallica played all of the call of ktulu lastnight.  and during seek and destroy, kirk and rob each sang a verse.  its obvious that james is having trouble singing some of these sets that lars makes up (watch the vids).  they finally put an instrumental in there to give james a break.  hopefully sometime soon theyll play the king of all instrumentals:  ORION!  How nice would that be?  i wonder how kirk and rob sounded singing the verses.  PEACE

I felt like starting a prediction for rare songs being played live. As you all know during this tour Metallica has whipped out Dyers Eve, Disposable Heroes, The Call of Ktulu, The God That Failed, The Unforgiven, Trapped Under Ice etc... but there are still songs left to play.

List only the rare songs they haven't played yet and you are confident they will play before the tour ends.

I think :

-My World
-The Struggle Within
-...And Justice For All

-Escape (don't think they'll play it but I wish!!)

Which title do you think would have been better?

Hard to tell. Both titles fit the song very well. "When Hell Freezes Over" describes the music a bit better I think, while "The Call of Ktulu" makes it a little mystical. I guess Metallica wanted to make a referrence to Lovecraft, so they named it 'Ktulu. (it's "Chthulhu" in the book...)

Okay, whats next... RTL. Good album, one of my favorites... enough crap, lets get to my even crappier reviews.

1. Fight Fire With Fire - a good song, when i first heard it the intro kinda caught me off guard as not being what i expect from Metallica. This one gets my Trademark grade of a B+ (T).

2. Ride the Lightning - one of my favorite songs, kind of repetetive intro but it's still a great song. who made me god to say... A- ?! well, ITS MY REVIEW, so i said it.

3. For Whom the Bell Tolls - this is a great song and one of my favorites at the moment (RTL is an all time favorite). this song has alot going for it, i especially like the intro. FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS? me, beeyotch.(T) (my crappy "jokes" that make you wanna puke are also my Trademark)

4. Fade to Black - A DEFINITE FAVORITE OF MINE. one of the best rock ballad type songs they got and alot of people would agree with me. (if u don't, ur a muthafukka) this song is getting a muthafukkin' A.

5. Trapped Under Ice - used to be one of my favorites, i "over-listened-to" this song but it still gets a B. Kinda short but we all know how long Metalica songs are so sometimes you need a break from listening to songs 7+ minutes long.

6. Escape - not the best song on the album but it is by no means a bad song. alot of people bash it and it isnt't that popular but im still gonna give it a B or B-, not sure. i'll decide later.

7. Creeping Death - one of the best songs on the album. i'll give it a B+.

8. The Call of Ktulu - another good instrumental, but i like all of Metallica's instrumentals. a bit long but most of it is good. this nice long piece of voiceless crap (crap worthy of god) gets a B.

my overall grade for Ride The Lightning is an A-, deal with it.

my ratings:

Fight fire with fire: 9(awesome fucking thrash, hard, heavy, big motherfucker with killer riffs and awesome drum work by mr. ulrich, especially the double kicks after kirks solo)

Ride the lightning: 8(good song but gets a bit boring after awhile)

For Whom the bell tolls: 9,5 (live10+++)(cunning stunts10++++++++++++++++) (a live song, the album version doesn't catch)

Fade to Black: 10 (a legend, three beautiful solos and the outro has made me cry)

Trapped Under Ice: 9 (very good, best climax of the album)

Escape: 7 (i agree with james, the song is boring, worst one  from the first five albums)

Creeping Death: 9 (also a live song, album version isn't that catchy, uneless you listen to it very loud)

Call of Ktulu: 9.5 (all metallica instrumentals are classics, allthough this one is the worst it's still great)

the guys:
Kirk: 10 (great solos)
Lars: 9 (he didn't yet show his true skills in RTL but still good)
Cliff: 10 (call of ktulu, and bellzz great work RIP)
James: 9 (his singing is screaming but that doesn't bother that much great playing)

Posted by stormet on 11/29/04 @ 12:51 AM    Post subject: Re: Metallica songs with a WAH solo

You'd be surprised, there's more than a handful of songs WITHOUT wah solos.
Here is some stuff...this 'wah guide' is STRICTLY for solos on the STUDIO albums (not their live renditions), some songs you may think that have wah effects actually have other effects such as delay, flanger, etc.  I've only done their first 5 albums (I didn't include Load and Reload because I'm not too familiar with a lot of those songs aside from the obvious like Fuel, Outlaw, Memory, etc).  This may not be 100% correct but it's pretty close.

Songs with a wah solo:
Hit the Lights
Motorbreath
Anesthesia - pulling teeth (for bass, the whole song is practically a solo)
Phantom Lord
No Remorse
Fight Fire with fire
Trapped Under Ice
Battery
The Thing that should not be
Damage Inc.
...And Justice for All
Eye of the Beholder
Dyers Eve
Enter Sandman
Holier than Thou
Wherever I may Roam
Don't Tread on Me
My Friend of Misery
The Struggle Within

Songs WITHOUT a wah solo:
The Four Horsemen
Jump in the Fire
Whiplash
Seek and Destroy
Metal Militia
Ride the Lightning
Fade to Black
Escape (has delay in some parts, but no wah)
Creeping Death
The Call of Ktulu (has delay in some parts, but no wah)
Master of Puppets
Welcome Home - Sanitarium
Disposable Heroes (has wah in other parts of the song but not in the solo)
Leper Messiah
Orion
Blackened
One
The Shortest Straw
Harvester of Sorrow
The Frayed Ends of Sanity
To Live is to Die
Sad but True
The Unforgiven
Through the Never
Nothing Else Matters
Of Wolf and Man
The God that failed

IF you count the improv. at the end of "For Whom the Bell tolls" then yes, it has wah in it.

REMEMBER, the non-wah solos probably have a different effect to them...so if you think there's wah in it, there actually isn't.

I agree with this list except I am pretty sure that there is a wah used in Leper Messiah after the sweeping. I dont listen to load/reload enough to tell you exact songs, but Kirk did go a little wah crazy in the 90's. But live, you can expect him to touch the wah at least once a song.

How is Call of the Ktulu creepy?
First of all its instrumental, and second of all its pure genious and one of the best Metallica songs.

What's your point?  Call of Ktulu is based on HP Lovecraft--it's supposedto be creepy.  yeah, it's an instrumental, a song doesn't need vocals to set a mood, and nobody said that it was a bad song.

one band that was HUGELY fucking influenced by metallica was that band that everyone heard of from the emails... "heathen". They even ripped off the riff from call of ktulu. Aside from that, they're good.

Puppets by far. RTL had a couple of duds (in my opinion, Trapped Under Ice and Fight Fire With Fire), while Master of Puppets had none. Also, the title tracks are WAY different in terms of quality. MoP is just better written in general, except for Fade to Black, which i prefer to Sanitarium. Also, Puppets has the best Metallica instrumental (Orion) as opposed to Call of Ktulu (which is still awesome).

Fight Fire With Fire - 9.5
(thrash at its finest, one of my favorite riffs ever)

Ride The Lightning - 9
(love it but at some times vocals get annoying)

For Whom The Bell Tolls - 9.5
(one of my favs, i love lars drumming actually and bass is killer!)

Fade To Black - 10
(no explanation needed, just fucking incredible everything)

Trapped Under Ice - 9
(great opening solo, no complaints really)

Escape - 8.5
(underrated as hell, love the sirens, love the chorus)

Creeping Death - 9
(kick ass solo, DIE DIE DIE DIE.. classic)

The Call of Ktulu - 9.5
(amazing instrumental, S&M is even better)

RTL is a top top metal album and I'd give it around a 9.5 for its overall effect.

Same system. 10 the best, 1 crappy (i assure you there wont be a 1) try to give you an unbiased opinion

Fight Fire With Fire-  7. really good, and it started the album with a bang, just compared to the others it doesnt quite deliver.

Ride The Lightning- 8. Another great song. good riffs, (especially the start) unreal solo and good drumming. just a bit machine-like at times.

For Whom The Bell Tolls- 8+half. brilliant song. class bass, OK drums, good enough lyrics and OK solos.
on a whole a really good song.

Fade to Black 10. incredible. Amazing Solos, good drums really good vocals and Cliff was amazing as usual. Well Structured too.

Trapped Under Ice9. brilliant.the Solos are the best from Kirk, and everything else was good too. Great tune.  ;D

Escape 9+half. also incredible and extremely underrated. the sirens at the end have a kind of horrifying sound to them. the chorus is epic. the drum beats are confusing during the good verses. the solos are good too. awesome!

Creeping Death- 7+half. good, but i think its a bit overrated. i like the dual bits and the chorus is pounding, and the verse is OK. good song.

Call of Ktulu- 7. the least best instrumental for metallica but still good. the Solos are some of the best and the general tune is good too. the jam at the end is awesome. a good song. :)

Ride The Lightning(the Album) 9+half. an incredible album. second best in my opinion. it improved dramatically from KEA and should be ranked as one of the best albums ever. the melodic feel to it is awesome and the general feel to it is breathtaking. A breathtaking album in all areas.

The outro solo in Fade To Black, or the solo in Call of Ktulu.

Heres my ratin for shit.. \m/

Fight fire with Fire- Starts off with a nice slow riff, that leads into a burstin, trashy metal tune, 9/10.

Ride the lightning- Very good song, its somthing to pull up at red light and blast beside the old folks beside u in a K Car listenin to the crystals er somthing. Very good solo, amazin.. one of the best Kirks ever composed, yet i do think there cood of been a slow part in the song that would of completed it. 8.4/10

For whom the bell tolls- Amazing song, very very good intro bass riff, good work Cliff.. to bad hes not around to read it! WE SALUTE YOU!, anyhoo, very good song, catchy chorus for sure, but i do think there cood of been a better solo in it besides the ending wah  part there.. 8.1/10

Fade to Black- Yes indeed, one of the best songs MetallicA has ever done. Best solos, very good riffs pickin with the Am C G E pattern there, best pattern ever. nothing else to say, but this has got to be a "must listen". 10/10

Trapped under Ice- Very good and or evil song, good singin, lyrics, very nice riffs indeed, good and fast nice NICe chorus, good work with all, no flaws in this song. but i do give it a 9.7/10

Escape- Very good intro, and chorus, the chorus so very catchy, itl be stuck in your head for months.. its kinda got a slow feelin in it.. but its all distortion.m over all, a 9.6/10

uhh.. what are the others.. OF COURSE!

Creepin death- on of my fav metallica songs of all time, best catchy chorus, nice NICE solo, begin is good, nice intro, and the part were he sings- "die, by my hands....,."
very good work james, ya all did good on that song 10/10..

Call of Ktulu- Yes a very good book by Lovecraft, although one of the best  instrumental song by MetallicA, its kinda.. repitive the first half, but.. its not borin. at all. we salut Ktulu (Cthulhu, original spelling) 9.7/10

OVER ALL, I give this album 9.3!, HAIL METALLICA!!, also i need a bass player thats 11-15 years old and lives in toronto..! METALLICA!

Posted by D-Man on 10/18/04 @ 07:08 PM    Post subject: How to get the monthly bootleg

Alright, here's an update on the Encycmet bootlegs...

What I have done here is just a test run to see how much of a response we would get for providing bootlegs. The response has been huge, thanks to you guys.

For now, the boots are going to go on hiatus for a bit. But, with that said, when they return, I'm gonna have a bunch of different ones for you guys to download, so don't lose hope.

As well, the traffic for the bootleg downloads has been huge. Because of this, I'm thinking about making some new requirements to be able to get the bootlegs. Nothing major though, probably just a "you should have this many posts" thing. If that is done, they can't be spam posts either.

But, I won't get ahead of myself here. As of now, the bootlegs are going to go on hold for now.

But, that doesn't mean you can't get them. Many members here are more than willing to share the bootlegs, not to mention there's the regular bootleg forum for everyone to use.

So, just a heads up.

Outlaw torn, Orion , Call of Ktulu, Escape....
Especially Bleeding me, this past tour hearing it live gave me goose bumps. It was the song during the concert where I really tried to take it all in and realize what was happening and that I again had made it and had the priviledge to see METALLICA live.
