I was able to see them play dirty window, unamed feeling, frantic and st. anger during the 2 times they played here in Australia. St anger was easily the best live song from st anger. Followed by Frantic, Unamed feeling and Dirty window. I would also love to hear shoot me again or all within my hands.

They only played two at the concert in Oklahoma City and one at the concert in Dallas i think it was would be awesome to play some kind of monster live, and all within my hands. there are some concerts that they did solo's with the St. Anger song and the one for frantic was like 30 secs long somewhere around there. (i wish i would of been at that concert too :'()

Let's make it alternative and leave out the classic "crowd pleasers"

Orion (starting off with an instrumental? Why not?)
Ride the Lightning
...And Justice for All
St. Anger medley (Frantic, Sweet Amber, Shoot Me Again, My World, All Within My Hands, Some Kind of Monster)
The Unforgiven (to replace Fade or Sanitarium)
The Outlaw Torn
The Call of Ktulu
My Freind of Misery
*Ununsually long guitarsolo/jam
The Unnamed Feeling
Trapped Under Ice
----------------
The Unforgiven II (also to replace Fade or Sanitarium)
Disposeable Heroes (to replace MoP)
Low Man's Lyric (to replace NEM)
Bleeding Me (to replace One)
Fixxxer (to replace Sandman)
----------------
To Live is to Die

There are only 16 songs here, but the majority of them are very long.

Frantic-10
St. Anger-8
Some Kind of Monster-10
Dirty Window-10(Used to hate now I love)
Invisible Kid-7(If it were three or four minutes long it would get at least an 8)
My World-8
Shoot Me Again-8
Sweet Amber-7
The Unnamed Feeling-10
Purify-4
All Within My Hands-10

St. Anger has really grown on me. It has its problems but it was an excellent move for the band. I think the band is right when they say its like the Justice album. It wasn't looked at too kindly by some when it came out but its pretty much a classic now and rightfully so. Metallica is still alive and well and I think their next album will be great.

I'll take a shot at it.

Frantic - Awesome opening with the fast guitar and drums and really is true to its namesake. (9/10)
St. Anger - The title track is a true headbanger, something that gets the blood pumping. (9.5/10)
Some Kind of Monster - The intro drags on for a bit, but I love the "Are We the People" bit. (8/10)
Dirty Window - I used to really hate this song, but it's grown on me. Unfortunately, there's not much variation. (7/10)
Invisible Kid - Easily the worst song on the album that's coupled with a mind-numbing eight minute timeslot, this one should have been left on the cutting room floor and it would have made the whole disc flow a lot better. (3/10)
My World - This song is a guilty pleasure, but it just embodies the spirit of the album in general with some pretty good lyrics. It's really fun to sing along to. (8.5/10)
Shoot Me Again - A good song that drags a bit, this one has an awesome chorus. The ending's "Enough's enough" was also interesting. (8/10)
Sweet Amber - Apparently everyone hates this song but me. I love the chorus, and the lyrics are just generally awesome. "She holds the pen that spells the end" and the final "It's never as sweet as it seems" really stand out as nice bits. James' going for the really high note near the end makes it  hit home that much better. (9.5/10)
The Unnamed Feeling - Seemingly the most personal of the songs to James, this one flows extremely well from the stop-start intro to the final chorus. If you notice the guitar, the song is deceptively simple, but the rhythm guitar beat is maddeningly intricate, with tons of off-beats and changes. This is a standout. (9/10)
Purify - Everyone also seems to hate this song. Yeah, it's not great, but it's still kind of a fun headbanging song to jump around to. You can also sing the chorus offkey and noone will care or notice. (6.5/10)
All Within My Hands - Seemingly the "epic" of the album, this one is a keeper. James' voice is in top mode on this one, going from soft to hard and back again with some crunching guitar riffs effortlessly. The end of the chorus with the clashing voices is especially incredible and is probably the standout moment of the album in my opinion, and I loved the line "Love is control, and I'll die if I let go" from the first time I heard it. However, the childish "kill, kill, etc" at the end should definitely have been jettisoned and kind of ruins the album's final impact after listening to it. (9/10)

St. Anger was meant to make the "fans" go crazy.
Look at how many more people Review this album more than any other they have made. More fights over this album too.
The sound is Raw and although the lyrics aren't "dynamic"
or "awe-inspiring," they still come from the Heart.
This album has an annoying drum ping in most of the songs, which hurts my ears. But the lower tuned Rythm is alright by me. Kirk should have had Solo's. But Metallica does what they want.

It should be called St.Madness

Whether you like it or hate it, it's STILL Metallica!!

I'd like to say I find it highly enjoyable.
I do not like:
                Invisible Kid
                Purify
                Sweet Amber
                All Within My Hands

St. Anger is St. Madness

Fuck it all and No Regrets!!

SAINT ANGER????

ARE YOU SERIOUS?

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?
As a drummer i can quite comfortably say that lars' drumming on st anger is fuckin good. Forget about the overall sound of the snare, coz i know its not the best. Songs like shoot me again (especially the end) is a fucker to keep up with the tempo changes. This album is def not as technical as justice but its solid drumming through out and has heaps of cool double kick as well. St anger the song also needs skill and endurance to pound out a 7minute plus song, which the majority of which is fast. All within my hands is awesome drumming too. Trust me its up there, despite what some think of the songs overall :P

I do like the album (but not very much)
that snare drum sound is intresting
but if you've got the skom ep listen to the remixed some kind of monster the drums sound better in it I think

these are the songs that i simply don't like in the album:

Invisible Kid, Purify and All within my hands the rest of the
songs are great

there has been a lot of discussion because of the missing solos
that doesn't bother me but sometimes kirk plays solos for those songs live and those solos are great so maybe...
dunno  :-/

Just another quick few words:

It's definitely something that needs to grow on you. I'm sure most of us hated it when we first heard it, but when you actually listen to it a few times, you really get into it.

And a note: I definitely agree with the sort of 'hard beauty' that is inside the songs of St. Anger. My favourite part of the CD is when they have the sort of cascading, clashing voices in All Within my Hands on the word 'again' at the end of the chorus. When I heard this, I was just in awe - it was amazing, kind of...violently gorgeous.

Like it alot.

James pours everything he's going through into these songs.
"The Unnamed Feeling" "St.Anger" and "All Within My Hands" are prime examples of this.

I truly think that no one should make judgements about this album unless they see SKOM and WATCH Metallica almost come to an end.

It's pretty ironic how everyone said from Load and ReLoad that they wanted a return to the thrash days, then the most aggressive album comes out since Justice and people go crazy.

We KNOW there were no solos and lack of melody but just accept it for the album it is and if you want to hear what the possibility of solos in it would sound like listen to the versions that someone made with solos. Personally, I like it better without them!

Next thing, Lars snare sound. I like it ONLY for this album, but everyone should stop blaming everything on Lars, just watch the group collaboration in SKOM, sit down with headphones, relisten to the album in its entirety and say "St.Anger is a brutal album."

Case closed.

St. Anger is a masterpiece. Nothing less.

First time I heard it, 4.30 pm June 6th 2003, I hated it. I was really dissapointed. I thought the sounds sucked, the lack of solos were UNFORGIVEABLE, and the songs were repetitive and poorly written. As I recall I hated the lyrics.
Then there came a time, I was going through some tough shit and started to identify with the lyrics, especially St. Anger and All Within My Hands. I started listening a lot to it and realized some song were actually really beautiful in a weird sort of way. I found comfort in the extreme sound and heavyness the lack of solos didn't really bother me anymore. That whole album helped me express my feelings, it made me cry, and it helped me getting through the day.
Today it stands as a very important album in my life, and it is to some extend my favorite album. Load and reLoad just have the best music (and go ahead and flame me for that, I don't care)
If I didn't go through the mentioned sorrow and pain, I would probably never had identified with the lyrics and still hate it. I am sure if you go through what I've gone throgh, and you are not emotionally retarded, you will come to love St. Anger too!

Ok I'm going to do this for the final time because I'm tired of debating this album. I'll try to do this as objectively as possible. First off I want to say that this album has some great things about it and also some bad things about it. As always the good cancels out the bad and vice versa making this album an ok album and not a great or shit one. It seems odd that this album is the most debated album out of Metallica's entire catalog. Load and ReLoad were not even debated as much as St. Anger. I think the reasoning for this lies behind that there are great things, ok things, and shitty things about the album. It's NOT an album that you either love or hate. To make my opinions founded I'm going to make this a review.

1. Frantic - I consider this one of the best songs over all on the album. It's pretty fast and the lyrics are pretty good. The only thing I don't really like about this song is the chorus. It's just a little bit too light and airy against the rest of the song. The guitar part during the chorus reminds me of the alternative soft rock shit that was coming out in the early 90's. The frantic-tick-tick-tick lines can kind of drive you nuts, but I don't mind them so much. The things I do like about this song is that Lars made a great move away from the backbeat he used on a lot of other songs. The other thing that really stands out to me is the cool guitar riff in the pre-chorus.

2. St. Anger - The song starts out so fucking great and then... it hits a wall of fluffy soft vocals and guitar playing. I can't stand that at all and that alone stops me from listening to the song usually. After it gets through that though it picks back up and gets moving again. The use of lyrics from Damage Inc., is interesting, and has me curious as to why James did so. If it wasn't for dead stop into softness on this song it'd be one of my favorites on the album.

3. Some Kind of Monster - A nice heavy guitar and bass groove start out the song. The riff slightly before and during the lyrics sounds more like something that Korn or some of the other newer bands might play. I can guess that this is where the nu-metal references brought up by others come in. But once the song moves towards the chorus it moves out of that back into a faster 16th note movement. Amazing how the drums are not right out in front in this song. It's nice to see Lars take a back seat for once. Supprisingly this song was one of the first ones I liked when I listened to the cd for the first few times. The off beat groove is definately too reminiciant of some nu-metal songs. However the song overall does not sound like nu-metal. It doesn't sound like usual Metallica either.

4. Dirty Window  - Starts out with yet another sixteenth note pattern on the snare drum following the start and stop rythym of the guitar. This is followed by faster riffing on the guitar. Then it drags down to a slower pace moving back into the fast riffing. Suddenly the song goes straight into a staccato pre-chorus which I actually like, unlike the part in St. Anger. The new snare drum sound is a lot more noticeable in this song than any of the pervious. I like the topic of this song probably more than any other on the album.

5. Invisible Kid - The opening riff is fucking awesome, but it would have sounded even better with a normal snare drum sound. The sound of the snare is even more noticeable. The song is the same the whole way through without a bridge. This is ok, but definately not like most of the older Metallica songs. This song sounds a bit like newer material out from newer bands, a little more accesible if you will.

6. My World - If every song on the album were put into a blender and then taken in as one song, this would be it.

7. Shoot Me Again - Again this song sounds like a lot of the other songs. A opening part, fast riff, slow with soft singing, fast riff... kinda getting old here. At least the song sounds like some older metal songs though and not anything to do with nu-metal.

8. Sweet Amber - The coolest thing about this song is the bridge. Sweet Amber slows down at parts like the rest, but James' singing doesn't get soft like in the others thankfully. This seems to be my new favorite of the album.

9. The Unnamed Feeling - This song would have been right at home on Load. It sounds different from any of the songs on this album. Its not up and down like the others. It sounds pretty cool even if it's not that fast. Kind of reminds me of Until It Sleeps.

10. Purify - The snare drum kills this song. I'm not really a fan of the lyrics either. The vocal line sounds kind of cool though if the lyrics had just been something else.

11. All Within My Hands - Wow the opening is really cool. Why does it have to go slow? Kind of cool part near the middle where it drops off and then picks back up. Could have been a good solo in here somewhere. The end is um... interesting.

Final Thoughts - This album's lyrics definately sound as if they came from someone who went through therapy. A lot of touchy feely kinda stuff, which is fine by me. But almost every song on here had the same feel as Unforgiven/UnforgivenII. It was up and fast then down and slow then up and fast then down and slow. There's some great parts in there, but this album sounds like it was a debut record from a band that can play, but just didn't have the right ideas. It's nice to hear the drums back in some parts as Lars almost always seemed to want them out front. The snare drum isn't too bad until the 4th or 5th song. Looking at it positively though, I'm a drummer and no one ever uses their snare drum with the snare turned off. So it was cool to see someone actually use that, even though it sounds like shit in some songs. I can understand that James is trying to sing some parts, but dropping a fast part in the middle of no where to suddenly just start a soft part sounds like shit. I don't care who you are, it sounds like shit. There could have been solos but the songs sound ok without them. I don't follow trendy music so I don't know if the no solos thing is trendy or not and I don't really give a fuck unless Metallica were doing it to be trendy. As someone else said (I think it was Metal-Assmonkey) this album was a step in the right direction. There were no country songs on this motherfucker and everything at least sounded heavy when considered as whole songs. The let down seems to come from the fact that everyone saying that this album was going to be like old stuff. And I think Metallica did say that this album was going back to their roots. Again as someone else said, it didn't go back to their roots. The album sounds pretty cool, but overall it was another faliure in expirimentation. I think on the next album they need to tape Lars' mouth shut and quit fucking around and just make a metal album. Oh and they need to get Bob Rock the fuck out of there. I like this album as I said before. I don't hate it, but it could have been ten times better. Bob Rock is pussifying Metallica and Lars is helping to push the band in the wrong direction. So you may be asking why I think this album is good with all the shitty things about it. Well let's talk about bad things first. All the songs sounds pretty much the same. There's nothing to break up the more repetitive ones. Even if they didn't add solos they could have added a bridge in a few of the songs. Now the good things. The riffs are heavier than a lot of the riffs on Load and ReLoad. They didn't add any balads to this one. Even though they have classics like Fade to Black and Unforgiven, putting a balad on this album would have just made it worse. Lars moved off of using a back beat for every song. There weren't any silly song topics as there had been on Load and ReLoad.

Posted by Saint_Anger on 10/29/04 @ 04:23 AM    Post subject: Re: Reviews of (somewhat) forgotten songs

Alright, here's part 3, from Garage, Inc. to St. Anger.
There we go

1. FREE SPEECH FOR THE DUMB (morris / wainwright / molaney / roberts) 1998 a:Garage, Inc.

This is probably the easiest song Metallica ever covered, about two and a half minute pounding on the same riff, coolest part of the song are the solo's from Kirk, sounds pretty amazing. Original song from Discharge ('82) sounds much better.
Rate: Metallica: 6 Original: 8

2. IT'S ELECTRIC (tatler / harris) 1998 a:Garage, Inc.

It's the fifth song they've covered from Diamond Head and overall the weakest. Although Metallica makes it sound a lot fresher, but I think the lyrical concept is a little out of time, cuz Metallica are already rockstars, right? Sarcastic fuckers! ;D.
Rate: Metallica: 6,5 Original: 6

3. LOVERMAN (cave) 1998 a:Garage, Inc.

Wow, this is cool! You can really hear the technical skills Metallica had built up over the past few years. Many people want to hear this song live (me too!), but I think that's not gonna happen, cuz there is again too much happening in this song, big layers of guitars and stuff. I simply love this one, Lars is doing great on drums and Kirk, once again, proves he's a great guitarplayer.
Rate: Metallica: 8,5 Original: 7

4. ASTRONOMY (pearlman / a. bouchard / j. bouchard) 1998 a:Garage, Inc.

Just as Loverman, a song with a lot of cool guitar sounds, this is by far the best cover they've ever done, but not such a great live song I think, but I would say to Metallica: "Give it a try, man!". The lyrics are kinda vague, I'd say, something with locked doors and a nurse called Carrie, I don't get it...But it's a great song!
Rate: Metallica: 9,5 Original: 9

5. THE MORE I SEE (morris / wainwright / molaney / roberts) 1998 a:Garage, Inc.

The second one from Discharge, and I think it's better than Free Speech..., it has this very nice punkrock-feel over it, showing that Metallica didn't lose their rebel sound. This song was done once or twice in a jam, but never in it's whole, that's too bad, cuz this song really gets the crowd going, I think. Way cool is that little jam at the end of the song, although I don't know what song that is, but I like it!
Rate: Metallica: 7,5 Original: 8

6. INVISIBLE KID (hetfield / ulrich / hammett / rock) 2003 a:St. Anger

Alright, I don't know what it is, but there is a St. Anger tour going on, but why don't they play those songs? They only play Frantic and St. Anger, plus a few others. Is it because the songs are too long? That should be no reason, cuz Justice has pretty long songs on it and they play a lot from that album...Maybe we can expect a Anger-medley in a couple of years, don't you think? Invisible Kid is one of the longest songs from the album and one of the coolest from the album, the only slightly bad part is that the lyrics are repeated too much, too bad! This song has a cool heavy main-riff. Also nice is James playing a freak in that part where he sings 'what a good boy you are', it makes me think about Jonathan of Korn, cool insane!
Rate: 8,5

7. MY WORLD (hetfield / ulrich / hammett / rock) 2003 a:St. Anger

This song opens real heavy, and goes on for about the whole song. It's not St. Anger's best, but still quite good. James really gets his anger loose with yelling his most favourite words 'motherfucker' & 'sucker'. I think this song is about Metallica is a world apart and no one gets in that easy, or Metallica is finally getting sane with each other. Well, I can only say 'That's about time!''
Rate: 8

8. SHOOT ME AGAIN (hetfield / ulrich / hammett / rock) 2003 a:St. Anger

Another heavy-ass song, with a great riff, what can I say? Maybe not the most special song from the album, but it has some good vocals by James and some cool drumwork...Shoot me again!
Rate: 7,5

9. PURIFY (hetfield / ulrich / hammett / rock) 2003 a:St. Anger

I think this is one of the worst songs of the album, it is stretched out too long with that jam at the end of the song. Plus it's almost like James is trying to rap during the verses and that is something he just doesn't have to do, from where I'm standing. The chorus is pretty cool though, James screams for help to get sane with the rest of his bandmates! Nice riffs though!
Rate: 6,5

10. ALL WITHIN MY HANDS (hetfield / ulrich / hammett / rock) 2003 a:St. Anger

The longest song from the album, and what a song it is, it is probably everyones favourite and I can understand why, because it has everything in it, heavy parts, slow parts, fast parts, this song is really a 9 minute overlook from what Metallica has ever done, I think. The only thing I don't understand is why they have never played it live this tour, maybe next year, huh? Keep hoping!
Rate: 9,5

So, that was about it, maybe next time I'm gonna whine about the other songs that were only played live once or twice, but you'll just have to wait for that okay?
See ya!

Well guys, YOU ROCK!!!!!!!! you assembled the best metal band on this planet.  I admire you guys because you have the potential to move masses of people and I am one of them.  You have write the best metal songs and your creativity to keep writing is incredible.  Personally, when I listen to your songs, It's a therapy for me, they make me feel good and they've play an important role in my life on a daily basis.  I have overcome a lot of many problems thanks to your music 'cause I have been related to some of your songs especially 'Fade To Black','The Unforgiven', 'Master of Puppets', 'Holier Than Thou', 'Wherever I May Roam' and most recently 'Frantic'.  I play guitar, like many others out there, and I can play all of your songs, From 'Kill'em All's Hit the lights' all the way to 'St. Anger's All Within My Hands' in my guitar.  Some of them were a challenge to learn and still a challenge to play but I pratice every day.  I have seen you guys several times and it's an AWESOME experience.

JAMES HETFIELD:  You're the best songwriter/lyricist and rhythm guitar player of all time.  The strong muscle in Metallica's sound and the best frontman of a band out there.  I truly admire you for going into rehab to overcome all problems and put in order your thoughts and  emotions cause that was needed for Metallica to take the next step and start a new chapter.  YOU RULE!!!

LARS UlRICH:  The best metal drummer on this planet.  You got style, speed, and you play every song like if you were playing the best song ever, with a lot of energy and enthusiasm, PERFECT. You are the guy who always gives interviews on radio and T.V. and also the guy who started it all, who put Metallica together 20 years ago and you did an excellent job, THANK YOU SO MUCH!

KIRK HAMMETT:  You're my favorite lead guitar player.  Your solos are always full of drama and very constructive.  You inspire me to pick up my guitar and start playin' all day.  No blame for no solos on 'St.Anger' cause  I think this album was like a therapy for you guys and your were experimenting new things.

ROBERT TRUJILLO:  'The God that save Metallica'.  You ROCK!!!!  you are devoted to your music cause and your energy, combined with James', Lars', and Kirk's makes the band sound strong and ALIVE!!!  I saw you guys last year's SUMMER SANITARIUM Tour and you were rockin' man.  I'm 100% sure that you will prove it and blow out the world on the next album.

Well, guys, there's no doubt that METALLICA is best metal band ever and I'm about to see you in concert again. I hope it won't take another seven years to make another album cause you got a new bassist and he needs to prove the world what he is made of.  Also hope to hear speed and awesome heavy riffs and of course, how i can forget to say it, we need SOLOS.

Thank for existing, that makes my life and Thanx for being

M E T A L L I C A

P.S. If you read this guys, I went to your concert when you stop by at the AMERICAN AIRLINES CENTER Dallas, TX. on November 17th 2004. You really showed and proved to us how Madly In Anger With The World you are.  FUCKIN' THANKS!!!

He is going to make me own him... Again.

Honey, I think you need to get over your persecution complex. And maybe make friends with real people instead of insulting strangers on the internet.

Practice what you preach moron.

it's that harmony in music you don't find in st.anger.

I beg to differ, name me one song that does not have an even slightly melodic aspect to it:

Frantic: "Keep searching..."
St Anger: "St Anger round my neck..."
Some Kind Of Monster: I'll give you that one.
Dirty Window: "Judge and jury..."
Invisible Kid: "I'm okay..."
My World: "God it feels..."
Shoot Me Again: "I stand on my own..."
Sweet Amber: "Ooooo Sweet Amber..."
The Unnamed Feeling: Don't even ask
Purify: Again, I'll give you that one.
All Within My Hands: Don't even ask

you know what, fuck it. and fuck st.anger. i listened to it again, and it's a complete abortion, aside from the songs "sweet amber" and "the unnamed feeling". however, these songs, while great, don't even touch the excellence that were classics like "ride the lightning", "master of puppets" and "...and justice for all". and saying country sucks is as much of an opinion as saying i don't like country. so fuck off, and fuck you. you know i'm right.

Easily the dumbest thing you have ever said during your time here.

1. It does not matter one ball hair what you think is a classic and what is not. As a long time fan, I have a hard time deciding what I like better: Some Kind Of Monster? Or ...And Justice For All? It does not matter what you think is good or not, the same as it is for me.

2. "Saying Country sucks" is a whole different ballpark to saying "I don't like country". One is an opinion. The other is a lame prepubescent attempt to insult a genre of music that has long outlived those who insult it.

3. "so fuck off, and fuck you. you know i'm right." Okay smartarse, lets look at this. Your telling us to fuck off - on our board, and saying fuck you to us - on our board. Mmmmmkay, it's insults like that, that prove to us just how intelligent you really are. And no - we don't know that you are right, in fact most of us have already posted opinions to the contrary.

Your parents must be so proud.
